Most of us look forward to easy, yet artistic sewing projects. Throw in the fact that these projects are also adorable and I know you’ll be adding today’s topic to your sewing to-do list. Have I piqued your interest? My goal is that you’ll be inspired to create hat and scarf creations for kids, called Cuddle Buddies Hats and Scarves designed by Sewing With Nancy team member, Donna Fenske.
Basic Construction
Patterns in this collection are based on a simple hat and scarf shape. The magic happens when the included appliqué pattern pieces are added to transform the animal characters. Once you’ve mastered the hat and scarf construction, there’s no limit to the possibilities.
Learn Basic Appliqué Instructions
Lions and tigers and giraffes, oh my! Appliqués will make your sewing project take on character. Even if you’ve never attempted appliqués before, you’ll have immediate sewing success after following our sewing tips. Plus, sewing on fleece is very forgiving—my kind of fabric. The hats and scarves require a yard of fabric or less. Perhaps you can use some of your leftover fleece scraps for the appliqués.
The appliqué pieces and pattern pieces for the hats and scarves are included in the book. You’ll find that with a few tweaks, the hat design can easily change from a giraffe to a lion.
The dinosaur hat and scarf combo are for ideal for make believe.
Learn how to draw details such as whiskers and eyelashes with a simple zigzag stitch. Just click to watch online!
Once you know the basics, you’ll be able to fashion all kinds of hat/scarf combos. Make these as gifts or let your young guest designers work alongside you; choosing the colors and pinning the appliqués.
The Sewing With Nancy crew—most of them kids at heart—thought the scarves and hats were made for them. Gregg Happ, our floor director, decided that the giraffe was his buddy.

The random winner of the Hoop It Up—Guide to Successful Embroidery book from Designs In Machine Embroidery (DIME), is Janet Bryant. She said: I have embroidered onesies and other children’s clothing items. The hooping is the hardest. I would love to win this book! Thank you Nancy for all the things I have learned from you over the years!
The random winner of the Hoop It Up—Guide to Successful Embroidery DVD from Nancy’s Notions, is Jacque who said: I’d love all the items. I think I would start with a tote to carry the cosmetic case and slippers. Then, throw in a towel wrap and call it complete.
Bye for now,
All are cute. Hard to choose.
The owl is my granddaughter’s absolute favorite!!
Making kitty for sure, me and granddaughter love it. Will design more as I have 18 grands! Thanks sooo on much!!
I absolutely love these animal hats and scarves. My favorite is the giraffe. Been a long time follower of you, Nancy. Thanks for all the good shows for us sewists.
Just watched the video & they are so cute. Where do you purchase the double-sided sticky stabilizer? I looked in the NN store & couldn’t find anything like it. What is the name of a brand as most stabilizers I Googled were sticky on 1 side & iron-on fusible on the other. Thanks
Sweet. Thinking these faces would be great on a quilt. I see Halloween costumes. I have to pick the monkey as the expression is priceless.
My 9 year old granddaughter wants to make the rabbit. I love the giraffe.
Love the looks of all – tiger would be first pick for great grandson he loves things with flaps – then the ladybug for couple of new little grand daughters – nice way to start using stash and getting head start for birthdays and then have on hand when someone new and special comes along thanks for the ideas and all the choice you give us = have a good day
They are all adorable but I like the owl with the wings! These would make great gifts for my grand children. And they would be so cute for the Sunday school children. Our church has a Christmas play each year and the under age 6 group wears animal costumes. These hats would be perfect for them. PS I am the costume director! Such fun to work with the children!
The giraffe is my favorite.
Love them all!
Love all of them! Maybe a little partial to the dog and cat, but only a little. They are adorable.
These are just adorable…. so very clever. Thanks for the giveaway!
The tiger is the cutest. My son is watching g the show with me right now, begging for a tiger hat.
I love them all!! Would love to make the dog -it’s little tongue is so cute- for my 1-month-old-grand-baby and the dinosaur for his 3-year-old brother.
I am blessed to have seven grandsons, one of loves dinosaurs, one of them loves jungle animals, they all love tigers and monkeys, the one lonely granddaughter likes puppies, I would be the best grandma ever if they got these cute hats from me.
Yup A tailor out there does exist. Nancy you have done it again. Provided us avid sewers the gift a making a child very happy. These scaves and caps are very cute, and easy. Thank you. Blessings to you Hugs John
What cute and adorable critters! As soon as I saw them my thoughts turned to making them of felt to be used at my daughter’s child care classroom. (4 year olds who love to dress up). I plan to leave off the ties off the hats, and only make the mitten part of the scarves. I was too impatient to wait so I already ordered the book! (Would share with a friend if I won another.) Thanks for filling so many needs!
Love these cuddle buddies ideas. All are adorable but I am partial to cat and monkey. We call our granddaughter our little monkey – she would love that hat and scarf. Thanks for all your great designs and information.
We’re owl-happy here! Adorable designs.
The giraffe was my favorite. Amazing caps and scarves!
My grandson Cooper is 10 & Ryen is 5 and they both love sharks. Cooper has books about sharks & has learned to recognize all of them. So that is why I would choose the shark. Also, our church ladies would like to make any of them for the school children who haven’t hats to wear this winter since we live in Michigan.
The grandkids sand I just love that giraffe. He is smiling at all of us and the kids would love to wear him.
Sorry Nancy, I can’t choose just one. I have a goal for 2016 and that’s to not let my second mastectomy rule my life. I have a rare breast cancer and don’t know what’s next so I want to sew, sew, sew. I want to leave something behind for everyone I love that I made especially for them. The hats would be perfect for the children and one adult (he would wear it to bed!) in my life.
Love the giraffe but can envision making multiple
So cute! My granddaughters will love these!
I like them all, but if I have to chose one, I think it would be the dog.
They are all so adorable! Would love to win so I could make them all! I think my favorite is the tiger, although, my grandson would love the dinosaur!
They’re all adorable! The giraffe is perfect for my long and lean granddaughter, but need to pick two more for her little brother and baby sister. Fun for grownup kids too!
I would love to have them all, to play with my grandchildren! so sweet, thank you. My favorite is the tiger
I really like them all but my favorite is the bunny (what’s up doc?)
I like the ladybug and the bunny best. They are all so cute. This is on my list for Christmas for my great grands.
I’m partial to the tiger, but I have new twin grandsons, so we’ll have to pick two! And we live in Minnesota so fleece with ear flaps is a must have.I’m looking forward to making pairs of these in different sizes as they grow.
My favorite is the bunny hat and scarf!
I love them all! I have so many little ones, and some big ones, in my life that would love to have one of these to keep them cozy.
I love them all. My grandchildren would love them, also. I can see them in the ladybug, dinosaur, bunny, lion, just from a first quick look.
Either the giraffe or dinosaur are my favorites. Both are suitable for a girl or boy, and both are timeless.
I like them all, but I have two grandchildren who a crazy about dinosaurs.
Love them all but my favorite is the dinosaur.
I like them all. My grandchildren would love them.
I like them all. My grandchildren would them.
The pink rabbit is my favorite.
I am partial to the dinosaur but they would all be wonderful for the children going through cancer treatment at Arkansas Childrens Hospital. They would keep their heads and hands warm while they were being treated and hopefully they would bring smiles to their faces.
I love the tiger the best zebra would be cute too, really all of them are cute
I like all of them. My Grandchildren would be so excited they love hats! and the girls love scarves and gloves.
I like all of them. My Grandchildren would be so excited they love hats! and the girls love scarves and gloves
My favorite is the monkey. No wait, the giraffe. No, how about the Dino. Okay, I can’t decide. I think I will have to make them all!
I like all of them. My Grandchildren would be so excited they love hats!
The tiger of course – War Eagle!
My first choice would be the tiger and the second is the zebra.
Our first great grandson loves wearing hats and I am sure his baby brother will love hats also, so these would be the first I would make. Nancy, you and your team are amazing. Thank you for all you do in giving us ideas to sew.
My favorite is the dog
I love the bunny! I will be a grandma for the first time in April. I think I need this book to make lots of fun stuff for her in the future!
They are all so cute. I think my granddaughter would like them all. If I could only get one I would take the owl. Thank you
Tiger for me. Might even make one for myself

I made a stuffed giraffe and a giraffe quilt ( that I still have to finish) for my granddaughter so I would love to make the giraffe hat and scarf for her!
They are adorable I like the owl and ladybug
I absolutely love the dinosaur. My great nephew, Eli, would love it. The Easter bunny for my great niece Naomi would be perfect.

they are all so cute! LOVE the giraffe!
OMB! These are sooooooooooo cute!! It was difficult to pick my favorites, so I will have to pick at least 3! So I will choose the lion, giraffe, and dinosaur.
I am looking for projects to make for our local children’s hospital, All Children’s in St. Petersburg, Florida. I think these would be great, especially for kids who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. It’s a hard choice, but I think the dog will be my favorite. All kids love dogs!
I really love them all but I really like the dino. The kids at my daycare looked at them and they loved them all. thanks for the chance to win a book.
These are just the most adorable things! I love them all, but I think the zebra and giraffe are my favorites. Thank you for a chance to win!
Oh My Goodness! All of these hats and scarves are SO cute, it’s practically impossible to choose only one! The zebra and the giraffe are my favorites, but I love them all!
NEED to make that monkey! Too cute to not make!!!
I would make the monkey for my grandson and the cat for my granddaughter.
They are all so cute, but my favorite is the giraffe.
So-o-o cute! My triplet grandchildren would love these. the giraffe would be first, then I’d have to make a polar bear, making my own pattern, and probably a shark for my grand son.
I think I saw a Lady Bug in one of the pictures. That would be my favorite.
I love them!! I’d love to make some for our clients at the Child Advocacy Center where I’m employed!!!!
This is a difficult decision because they are all so adorable. My 6 month old grandson, 7 year old adopted grandson, and 10 year old adopted granddaughter would all look cute in the Giraffe hat and scarf. Soooo cute.
Definitely the Giraffe! I love giraffes!!!!! I have a grandson that will look adorable in this hat and scarf. I have several of your books and I would love to add this to my collection. Thank you Nancy
Theses are so cute, anyone would love one and my favorite is the tiger!
My daughters are now 26 years old, but one of my twin girls loved giraffes growing up. The giraffe set reminds me of that. When we went to the zoo, she was hoping to ride a giraffe. Of course their necks are too fragile so she had to settle for riding an elephant. So, I really like the giraffe set because of my warm memories.
I adore the giraffe with its long ossicones with tufts of hair sticking up. The small ears and colored patches add a distinct flare as well!
All versions are too cute for any young one, the giraffe is my ultimate favorite! Kudos!
OMG, these are so cute. I think my favorite is the tiger, not sure if I like it the best because of the cute little model. I love his smile, it makes me smile too. My little grandson (almost 9 months) would look so cute in any of these. Thanks for the opportunity to win this awesome book and thanks for the demonstration on how to make.
They are all so adorable, how can I pick a favorite?!! I’ll have to say the zebra because it was my son’s favorite animal when he was a little boy.
My kids and grandkids are all too old for these but I’d love to make them anyway. Great projects for Gingerbread Markets and Christmas giving. Also for homeless shelters. My favorite is the shark.
These are all cute. Save the scraps and give them to someone who makes “the hat ladies” hats for children. Scraps 4″ cross wise X 7″ length will make one gore for a hat. I take scraps and buy plain fleece for the band. I recently cut out 25 hats from scraps from salvages when someone made was making fleece blankets.
They are all so cute that it’s hard to choose. I think I’d pick the ladybug and the dinosaur, but my two granddaughters (age 2 and 4) would probably like the tiger and the giraffe!
The giraffe, but must say I love them all. I have three great grand babies from four months to nineteen months, they would love these. One does not care for hats, this just might be the answer to keeping him warm Springfield winter weather!!
I LOVE the pup as it would be a fav for my grandkids, but I also like the giraffe. she is so adorable. Maybe would have to make them all and give away to the Ronald McDonald house!!!
Love the Dinosaur & the dog!
I Love the bunny, these would be great for the kids at all childrens…
What a hoot!!! My favourite is the owl.
What cute projects! I think they would be fun for my kids (beginning sewists) to make for 4-H projects. Do you think they would also be good community service projects? My son received a Project Linus blanket when he had his appendix out and treasures it — it would be neat to make something fun for other kids to help them. My favorite is the tiger (but that may be because my cat is helping me type).
My favorite is the dinosaur but I have five grandkids and they would love them all!
I think the dinosaur is my favorite but I have 6 grandbabies who would all love a different one! These are so adorable!
They are ALL so darling but I think the giraffe is my very
favorite! Thank you Nancy–what a BLESSING you are!
I just love the dinosaur hat! I taught elementary school for years and my 2nd graders were in LOVE with Dinosaurs. I can’t wait to make some for my grandchildren!
Would be perfect for grandma and granddaughter. Matching set. Would love to win the cuddle buddies book. Lady bugs would be first made.
The lion! I liked the fringe mane.
The giraffe!!! So adorable!
That shark is adorable! But I do find them all very cute. I would definitely make more than one. What a great project.
I love them all, but I think the tiger is my favorite. Would love this book to make for my grandsons and gifts for others.
I think my favorite is the dinosaur. My 4 yr old grandson loves dinosaurs.
I would make the purple cat first.
OMG. As an adult I would love to have one of these super cute hats. I live in the snowy north and there are many homeless children of various ages. I am considering making many hats for these precious children in lots of colors.
These hats with scarves are really cute. I think I would start with the tiger. Thanks for such great ideas.
My son’s college mascot is a lion, I would love to make him one for walking around campus.
My favorite is the giraffe but my little granddaughter is an animal lover so I’m sure I would be forced to make more than one
They are all adorable! It would be fun to let each child pick their favorite and then help with the sewing.
I’d love to have the Cuddle Buddies Hats and Scarves book so that I could make them all! I have a bunch of fleece, 1 yd. & below, that I would finally have a pattern for, to destash the excessive load of fleece I currently have! What a great idea!
It’s too hard to choose. I might just have to make them ALL!!! But with six grandchildren, they all could take their pick. Maybe a Ladybug for Lyla, a dinosaur for Troy, a monkey for Jase …………….
love all the patterns -would love to make one for each of my grandsons…a monkey for one and a tiger or dinosaur for the other
Wow, what a wonderful idea and design for the hats and scarves. All ages could wear and their great fun the young and old at heart can wear. Know one could wear one without putting on a big smile to their face or others who saw them wearing them. I love them all so I would have to make and give away, lol. If I could only pick one, I pick the zebra.
I agree with Gregg! Giraffe all the way!
They are all adorable. My Grandchildren would love to have a cat, for a first choice. Monkey would be a close second. The older kids, could even help to make one.
I love the dinosaur one!
Like your floor director, Gregg, I really like the giraffe, but I like the dog and lion also. These are all very cute and I can see making many of these in my future.
Wow! I really like them all but the tiger is my favorite.
I love them all, but I think the puppy is my favorite. I will definitely make some of these for my granddaughters.
I am a tigger person, but I have a friend that loves anything giraffe and young boys just crazy for dinosaurs and and very young girl that would be adorable in a cat or duck.
I would love to make the giraffe for my granddaughter as she loves them!
Oh these are way too precious – my favorite so far is the tiger but the giraffe and dinosaur are giving it a run for the money!
One of my great nieces loves purple and puppies. I would have to make the puppy/dog in purple for her and then make the rest for the other greats.
Even my teenage grandkids love the hats. I like the tiger.
Any one of the Cuddle Buddies might expand a chilld’s inagination. Who would they pretend to be? I think a dinosaur. And who knows – it might even lead to a bit of researcch into who they are.
While they are all adorable, I love the dinosaur. My four year old grandson has a passion for dinosaurs. In fact I just made him a dino costume for his birthday so the dino hat reminds me of him. He would love it.
I don’t think I could make just one. They are all so cute.
Where do you purchase the double sided sticky stabilizer?
I wo I ld make all 12 and start with the giraffe then kitty all for my grand kids and great niece and nephews. . Love this pattern!!
Oh My Goodness! Sooo Cute! I love the giraffe! And the monkey and the tiger! All of them are just adorable.
I’d make the giraffe, tiger, lion, monkey, and dinosaur first for my 5 grandchildren. Then I’d craft a bunch for local charities. What a great book!
The ladybug is definitely the cutest hat of all! I look forward to making several of these!
I would make the giraffe first. These would be great additions to our mitten and scarf tree at Christmas at church.
Love the owl would love to make this for my granddaughter!
Can’t decide if I like the purple kitty or the monkey best …..
For a chance to win Cuddle Buddies Hat and Scarves book. I would make hats and scarves for the children that are in need in our area. To give those children something special would be a real treat for me. Thank you for the chance to win.
They are all so cute! Hard to decide. The first one I think I would make would be tiger.
Would love to see a peacock, but like the lion.
I have two and half year old twin grandsons. They would love the dinosaur hats!!! I would love to make these for them. I also think my other older grandchildren would like these also. Thanks for the opportunity to win this book!!
I love them all-very cute. But would make the dinosaur for my first grandson because he loves them right now.
I have a grandson who adores dinosaur .
They are all so cute! Of course, being a dog person, I would have to say that’s my favorite. Having 12 grandchildren, I would definitely find much value in the book and could use every design. My husband raises cattle, so the cow would also be favorite.
Oh my! Every one of the ‘critters’ are adorable and my grandsons would have such a blast choosing which animal fit their mood for the day. They love to ‘help’ me sew, so this might be a project they could do to share with friends. What fun!
Wow, so cute and what a fun project to do with a child too, let them pick which is their favorite. I love them all, so hard to choose just one, but if I had to it would be the Lion. Thanks for always sharing fun ideas.
I like the bird hat. The are all so cute.
I like them all but would make a giraffe first for both my grandsons as they were able to feed the giraffes at a Zoo and, needless to say, were so EXCITED about that. Both boys LOVE all animals so I would more than likely make each design for them <3
I like the puppy, my granddaughter would love it.
It’s very hard to choose a favorite, but I’ll go with the ladybug, though all are incredibly cute.
The dog. I have a grandson that likes to pretend he is a dog. I would love to make one of the dog pattern for him. I would make all of them for him. It would be a great way to encourage his vivid imagination!
My granddaughters love owls, so that’s my favorite this morning!
I’ve been making hats, scarves and headbands out of safety orange fleece and I’m tempted to add some tiger features to these, though that might defeat the purpose of the safety color!
They are all adorable – no way I can chose just one!
I must say it is hard to pick a favorite Cuddle Buddie but tiring about my granddaughter and niece I would have to go with the kittie.
They all look so cute…can’t decide which one l’d make first.
The dinosaur is my favorite! They are all so cute and each is sure to be a hit.
I can’t pick a favorite as they are all so adorable!
Toss up between the lion and giraffe
I received a sewing machine as a present in December, ilook at it every day with fear, this looks like a great place to use it.My favorite would be the dinosaurs
It is hard to choose one, I like them all but I would choose the rabbit, my granddaughter would love that one.
My friends and I sewed over a hundred fleece hats using the technique of the Hat Lady you recently featured. Yesterfay we delivered 60 to Mobile Hope Loudoun, an organization that helps homeless children in Loudoun County, Virginia. If I won the Cuddle Buddy book, Our group would use it to make Cuddle Buddies for next winter. They are just adorable and would make every child feel special.
Personally, I love giraffes, BUT I have a granddaughter(1 of 6 & 1 grandson) who loves Daniel Tiger, so I would make that one first hopefully in time for her 2nd birthday
With many more grands, I would love to try making several and they would each have a different one!!!
For a chance to win Cuddle Buddies, I like the lion.
The green owl is my favorite!
the giraffe is my favorite
Oh my goodness these are so adorable. I would love to make them for my granddaughter, great neices and nephews. The dinosaur is my favorite!
