sewing with nancy planning a tv show in comfort

I’ve been planning Sewing With Nancy TV Shows for three decades. As you might expect, almost all of the shows have been planned in a traditional office and sewing studio. Several years ago, my most frequent Sewing With Nancy guest, Mary Mulari, invited me to her home office for a planning session. Hmm, novel idea—especially since the invitation came in January and Mary lives in Northern Minnesota. Sometimes a girl just needs an adventure!

For the past eight years, Mary and I have kept up the tradition of a 3-day planning event. I recently returned and thought I’d share some scenes with you. Unlike an office setting, this planning session is done in comfort. Don’t confuse working in comfort with lack of productivity—no siree!

Step #1—Inspiration

Mary works weeks in advance of my arrival to gather ideas for the next 2-part TV concept. Her method of organization is to create a bin or tray per topic. Her dining room table turns into the brain center!

Step #2—Motivation

Get out the chocolate, licorice, and tea! These treats are just some of the many tasty motivators stocked up for this planning session. Knowing that I am a connoisseur of black licorice, only Panda Licorice is served. It’s available at most health food stores so it must be good for you—right? (Panda Licorice has a new blueberry licorice. I now have a new favorite!)

Then there is chocolate—the healthy kind, dark chocolate of course!

Step #3—Comfort

Take off shoes, put on slippers! Mary’s sister knits wool felted clogs. Makes me almost want to start a show called “Knitting With Nancy.” Almost is the operative word!

Step #4—Get to work

The two of us fine-tune and cull down ideas. We both draw sketches and takes notes.

Step #5—Take breaks.

The scene outside is lovely. Time for more tea to enjoy the views both inside and out.

I thought you’d enjoy seeing Mary’s decorative touches around her house and office! There’s creativity everywhere!

  • An antique ironing board serves as buffet center. Notice the landscape quilt in the background. It was a gift to Mary from quilting artist, Natalie Sewell.

  • I so enjoy Mary’s creative wall grouping that changes with every visit!

  • Her sewing studio is well organized. (Could that be because she was having company?) What a great place to sew!

  • A childhood dress makes a great focal point. Can you spot Mary as a child in the photo?

  • Scarves on a banister—how novel!

  • Here’s a corner of her office space.

Step #6—Repeat steps 2 through 5

  • Then, there’s the inspirational sketching station.

Mary will travel to Wisconsin to record the 2-part series at the TV studio in April. The series will first be made available at the end of October and early November.

Watch Mary and me at work!

Last year we planned the 2-part series Easy Reversible Aprons—Everyday to Elegant. Have you watched the series?
