Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares - Part Three

Incorporating specialty fabrics can add functionality when sewing gifts and projects. For example, try clear vinyl. This unique fabric is the star of the Sewing With Nancy program, Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares—the third episode. Watch online.  Here’s a preview of the projects that you’ll see demonstrated during the show.

Jewelry Caddies

Nancy began this episode with a Jewelry Caddy duo, which fits all of the standards set for this show. The caddies use two sizes of fabric rectangles, specialty fabric (clear vinyl with a ribbon accent trim), and all the sewing is done with straight stitches. Best of all, the projects are attractive and very practical!

Portable Ironing Blanket

Use the same dimensions as the jewelry caddies plus Quilted Iron Quick fabric to make a portable mini-ironing blanket. Use it next to your sewing machine for quick presses. Or, create a larger ironing blanket, any size of your choice, with the same transportability. It could easily be used as an ironing board substitute or for travel. Either way, you can custom-make these projects easily with Nancy’s sew simple techniques.

Closet Organizer

How about adding extra storage to your home without assembling knock-down furniture or remodeling a closet? Create portable, compact closet organizers with double-sided quilted fabric, clear vinyl, and ribbon trim. It’s another straight-stitched project that can hang in full sight or hidden behind a closet door.

I love the closet organizer. Who doesn’t need more storage space? Also, it is an attractive way to add the storage. Plus by using vinyl a person can see exactly what is there. No more searching for items. Great idea!!!!

I have two favorites the closet organizer would be great for shoes and small clutch purses. I am also a quilter and I would love to make that small ironing blanket to have on the table next to my sewing machine.

The closet organizer looks like a real handy item to have. One can clear away shoe clutter in a closet with this. Would love to create this!

Each time I read Nancy’s newsletter I want to put everything aside and do a sewing project. Small projects are so much fun.

I like the portable ironing blanket. I am teaching my daughter in law how to sew and since the house is small this would be useful.

My favorite would be the ironing blanket to take to classes. It would also be handy to have near embroidery machine or sewing machine when a lot of pressing is involved so as to not have to get up and down to the ironing board.

This is one of my favorite series from Nancy. I do like the portable ironing pad. The travel totes would be wonderful to make and use also. And then I would like to top it off with the traveling jewelry caddy!

Honestly, I like all of the projects! The projects I need to make for right now/use right now would be the Portable Ironing Blanket and Closet organizer from Ep. 3 – for my daughter for college! Since your timing is perfect for finishing the projects before fall semester begins, I better get sewing!
My ultimate favorite is the tote bag, “saddle” bag and cosmetic bag set from Ep. 1. – I would like to make one for myself for a “work bag” set, and one for our other daughter for gymnastics.

I think my favorite would be the luggage saddlebag. It’s so nice to have so many ways to use scrap pieces of fabric!

  • Lorraine Alves
    June 27, 2019

The travel saddle bags are my favorites. The sizes shown are perfect for most luggage. However, because they are rectangles, the sizes can be adjusted to work with all sizes of luggage.

Love them all, but right now, the ironing pad is on my radar. I would make one for my dad to have a small ironing surface on top of his dryer in his elder-complex apartment! Would be great for touch up ironing. My similar store-bought jewelry organizer is wearing out. That would be next on my list to make!

I love just about every item in this series, but my favorites are the cosmetic pouch and tote. I have already made the cosmetic pouch, with a few alterations. I made it into an electronics pouch that stores all my cords and adapters. I added special snap loops inside to keep my cords and earbuds from uncoiling. I also stitched the large front pocket into three smaller pockets.
