Sew a quick notions organizer from a purchased placemat. It’s ideal for gift-giving.
The original notions holder is fast to make with Double-Faced Quilted Fabric, contrasting binding, and assorted zipper-top bags from the grocery store. It’s a featured project in one of my newest books, Nancy’s 30 Favorite Gifts To Sew, a book that the Sewing With Nancy team and I put together in celebration of Sewing With Nancy’s 30th Anniversary.
In today’s blog posting, you’ll learn my super-quick blog exclusive version made with a purchased placemat and four clear 3-ring zipper-top pencil pouches from the office supply store.
- Nancy’s 30 Favorite Gifts to Sew Book
- One purchased placemat
- Four clear 3-ring zipper-top pencil pouches from the office supply store
- 1/2 yd. 7/8″ grosgrain ribbon
- 1-1/2″ Velcro® Sew-on Tape
- Double-Sided Basting Tape, optional
Stitch Velcro® Sew-on Tape to placemat edges as shown. Fold the placemat in half, right sides together, and mark centerline. Tape two 3-ring pencil pouches on each side of the center placement line—stacking and staggering the pencil pouches.
Stitch centerline, through all layers, attaching pencil pouches to placemat. Trim away excess pencil pouch bottoms—1/4″ from stitching line.
Cut ribbon the length of the placemat plus 1″. Turn ribbon ends under 1/2″. Apply Double-Sided Basting Tape to wrong side of ribbon. Center ribbon over stitching line.
Edgestitch ribbon to placemat around all four edges using a Teflon Foot. The Teflon Presser Foot will prevent the pencil pouches from tugging against the foot.
Fill with sewing notions and enjoy. This also works great as a makeup organizer!
