Can’t Fail Free-Motion Quilting Techniques

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Free-Motion Machine Quilting for Beginners/Molly Hanson/Nancy Zieman/Sewing With NancyOne of my favorite phrases is, If you think you can’t you’re probably right! Did you ever have that thought when it came to free-motion quilting? Luckily my Sewing With Nancy guest, Molly Hanson, took the can-do attitude and taught herself artistic stitching. Now, you can watch her can-do free-motion quilting techniques online and view the specific techniques in her book.

Molly’s goal in teaching free-motion quilting is to inspire creativity. The best news is that creativity isn’t difficult! To prove it, we’ll start with Paisley free-motion quilting techniques.

Paisley

The wide-to-narrow paisley design is often paired with geometric quilt patterns. It’s a free-motion design perfect for beginner stitchers.

Note from Nancy—I’ve tried free-motion quilting in the past and was never able to master paisley. After following Molly’s directions, I had success after the first try. Really!

Woodgrain

Quilting nature-based designs seems to bring a sense of calm. Woodgrain is a design that relies on imperfection for its beauty. This is not a design to stress out about or fuss over. Small wiggles and bumps give it character, and variance in width of the grain adds to the beauty.

Swirls

Swirls work well almost anywhere. You’ll learn how to manipulate the shape by creating a half or even a quarter swirl, or stitch around one swirl to create more layers to fill a space. This design teams well with many other free-motion styles.

Print Tracking

Our last free-motion quilting technique of this series is Print Tracking. Just like it sounds, you choose a printed fabric and track or stitch along the design. This outline stitching allows you to make the fabric design really stand out, while giving you the opportunity to quilt all sorts of new shapes you might not otherwise try.

I have only quilted for a couple of years. And by quilting I mean piling most and having it quilted. The few things I have quilted I stipples. I do not have a long arm and don’t know how you manipulate such a large piece with the small arm. Can’t wait to read this book to learn some new techniques.

Love the swirls. I haven’t started a quilt because I am afraid that I wouldn’t be able to finish. With this book I believe I could start my quilt. Have a Happy New Year. Love your show.

My preference is for the wood grain. Next would be the circles, and then follow-the-pattern. I am anxious to try this technique but will have to wait until the “holidaze” have passed.

I received this book, DVD, and kit for Christmas. I am really impressed with the information and quality. I opened the book to the exact pattern that I wanted to try for my recently finished quilt top. I really feel I can do this just by listening to the words of encouragement on the DVD.

I have tried free motion quilting a few times. I like the feather designs. I would like to learn how to handle a largest quilt when using the free motion techniques.

I “wood” love to read this book and try out the wood grain. My last name is Wood and I have finally found a stamp for my labels– it is wood grain! This would be the icing on the cake if I can get some confidence and experience with free motion quilting. I always learn from you, I’ve watched since before I ever sewed or quilted. Thanks!!

WOW!!! I’ve always thought stippling was pretty, but was afraid to try free motion quilting. It just seemed like something I would never be able to master. I watched the first video, got some courage, and decided to give it a try. My first few samples weren’t that good, but they weren’t that bad either. So, I kept practicing and after a few hours my samples started looking pretty good. Now, I’m super excited. I really think I can master this. Thanks Nancy for having Molly on your show.

    December 27, 2014

The woodgrain design is beautiful. I can only do meandering fairly well. I think lots of practice is required to learn the really beautiful designs. Maybe that should be at the top of my New Year resolutions. Practice, Practice, Practice!

    December 27, 2014

I love all of the techniques you’ve shown – the Paisley, the Woodgrain, the Swirls, and the Pattern Tracking. I’ve tried a couple of those in the past, but my results were not that pleasing. Any insights in how to do these designs successfully would really help, as I do not want to be resigned to only stippling circles the rest of my life! 😉

I like paisley and wood grain. I used to do FMQ and haven’t in many years.

  • Susan Putman
    December 27, 2014

I really like the look of the wood grain quilting. I have been experimenting with free motion quilting for several years, but usually wind up sending my projects out to long arm quilters. Maybe if I won this book I could complete my pile of table runners and totes – they are just too small to justify a long arm quilter, but they have been waiting for awhile!

    December 27, 2014

I like the look of the wood-grain. Molly makes it look so easy. I think I will go try it after posting this. Molly looks so cool, calm and collected when she is free-motion quilting, even on camera. I love that she goes slow and does not do the pedal to the metal technique that I have seen. Thank you so much for allowing Molly to show us how she does this.

  • Marcia Wood

I am particularly interested in the Paisley pattern. It looks like it would be adaptive to many projects, and is a new twist to the standard stippling. I have yet to master free motion quilting; in fact iI haven’t even reached novice so Molly Hanson’s book and video is just what I need. 🙂

First, I think they are all fabulous! The one I would like to master is the paisley because I think it would lead into some sort of feather motifs. Thank you for your wonderful mini classes! So many people free motion so why shouldn’t I be able to. Thank you for putting these videos on line, I know you have helped so many quilters to try. I will be ordering the book and will send you a photo of my first finished quilt. I’m now working on an applique by Toni Whitney ” The Guardian” it’s a beautiful rearing horse, going to go on my wall in my living room as it is my first applique quilt and my first to free motion. Swirl s and wood-grain. Swirls remind me of the freedom of clouds moving across the sky. Wood-grain show how a tree grows with it’s up and downs, much like me learning free-motion quilting.

I would like to learn the Paisley technique to use in my free motion quilting. It is used for beginners which I am. I only do borders and Stitch in the Ditch on my quilts and it looks very primitive. But learning to do Paisley would be a wonderful experience. I like Molly Hanson’s book and would love to be the winner. Thank you. Diane Calvi

I don’t know how to do free motion quilting. I really want to learn how. There are so many quilted items I’d love to make. There is some pre-quilted fabric in the market, but the patterns and colors are never what I’m looking for, not to mention the boring quilting style. I would love to make my own quilted fabric.

    Hi Nancy,
The local PBS station had this lovely program on Jan31, 2015. I was interested in the information in Nancy’s Corner, about the “Quilts for Comfort”. Only thing on the ‘Road to Life Tanzania” web site showed to send a $10. donation with each block NO LATER than Sept 1, 2014, and a drawing to be in Oct.2014 to win a quilt made from the donated blocks. The site Blog has had NO postings since 8/13. Are they really accepting blocks for quilts for the hospital patients. I would LOVE to send blocks for quilts. Any information would be appreciated.
Thank you for GREAT programs. Marcia
