Welcome to the first day of my 30-Minute Doll Clothes Blog Tour! During the next two weeks, the Nancy Zieman Sewing Bus—kinda wish I had a real sewing bus—will make 11 stops, visiting the sites of some of my blogging friends!
This past season, 30-Minute Doll Clothes, a Sewing With Nancy 2-part series with guest Joan Hinds, piqued such interest that I knew other blogging sewists would enjoy adding their creative touches to these easy-to-sew patterns.
To launch this tour, my sewing studio staff created a version of the Birthday Party Pattern using the Dress Up Days fabric collection by Riley Blake Designs.
Easy Sewing Steps
The instructions in the 30-Minute Doll Clothes Book (that includes all the patterns for 10 different outfits) are straight forward. If you’re going to sew one of the doll clothing pieces in 30 minutes, you’ve already guessed that the steps are not complicated! But then, there’s always another shortcut.
Save Time with “Fuse ’n Gather”
To speed the gathering process along even faster, we used Fuse ’n Gather, the new gathering tape from Clover.
- First finish the three sides of the skirt pieces as detailed in the book.
- Then, baste the layers together and mark one long edge at each quarter point.
- Press the Fuse ’n Gather to the wrong side of the longer layer.

- Follow the instructions on the packaging and wrap the threads at one end around a pin. Pull the threads at the opposite end to gather. Talk about even gathers!
- To create the detail in the skirt, pleat up the center of the skirt’s top layer. Hand baste and later accent with a ribbon bow. Working over a sleeve board makes it easier to shape the small pieces.
- After quarter marking the waistband, meet right sides together and stitch to the skirt.
- Then, topstitch the waistband from the right side. Notice that moving the needle to the left position keeps the entire foot on the flat waistband. There will be an exposed seam on the wrong side but the doll will not mind!
- The finishing step is to stitch on a Velcro closure. You’ll find all of those details in the book.
Create the top in another 30 Minutes
We followed the pattern instructions just the way they’re written in the book. Again, the sewing is simple—all straight stitching. The sleeve board was a valuable tool for pressing.
- A side note: We couldn’t find 1/4″ wide matching ribbon to use for the straps. The purple grosgrain ribbon was 5/8″ wide, so it was folded in half and stitched to make it narrower. Problem solved. If you look closely, you can see the double layers of the strap in the photo.

Bye for now,

I have never made doll clothes. The last time I sewed clothing items was 1964 in Home Ec. My grand daughters inspired me to try. With the help of a good friend; I made nightgowns for their American Girls. Then came sleeping bags, clothing bags complete with padded hangers, culminating in breeches (white lame’) and black jackets for horse show outfits. Love the 30 Minute book, so easy. Thanks for all the tips.
I am so excited to find your sewing show and all the web posts. When I was a child my Mother made a lot of my clothes. I have a new step daughter. She and I will be making these doll clothes for her doll. I think this will be a fun and wonderful way for she and I to bond and create our memories.Thank you.
I remember taking sewing classes in Junior High School and couldn’t wait to get home to make a miniature version of what I made in class. Of course I had to sew by hand as we couldn’t afford a machine back then. My mom and I would sit together and she would help me along with her suggestions. They are precious memories some 47 years ago.
What I would like to see in the future are Western girl shirts that have the fancy stitching on the yoke. Also the yoke would be a curvey line like the big girl shirts have with some piping added for authenticity. A quick tutoorial on how to make a lasso and leather looking cowgirl boots. A real leather belt and western buckle would top off the outfit.
To continue along this line of thinging would be some western style skirts, bandanas, long gloves with the fringe on the sides, ETC. I would do research on what they are wearing now for ideas. Oh I am so excited!
I have been making doll clothes since I was a child. My sister (with 4 boys) and I sewed so many Barbie outfits for my daughter’s doll that she was the envy of her friends. I would love use the book or fabric to continue this tradition for the 18″ doll that are so popular now and, I’m thinking would be easier to sew for than the tiny Barbies.
How exiting and inspirational. I love making my own dolls as well as the 18″ doll clothes. This certainly is an opportunity to explore creativity. Thanks
Everything is Too Cute, Nancy! Would you believe that my mother and grandmother made doll clothes and sold them in Grandma’s shoe store in the 50′s. So, of course, I sewed for my Barbie’s in the 60′s! My mother just passed this last week and I realize that it is time for me to step up to the plate. As I have 2 two year old grandaughters your book and blog couldn’t be more timely for me! Such inspiration! Thank you!
Hi Nancy. I bought the book but didn’t start the sewing until I was inspired by the blog tour. I made the simple sundress with matching boxers and turned the outfit into “babydoll pajamas.
I love the outfits in your book!! Brings back memories of when my grandma taught me to sew outfits for my American Girl doll!!
My nine year old would love this she is sewing now and these would be simple and short on time. (I posted above but it is different?) Shuttermom77at gmail dot com
Wonderful techniques! This book would be great to use to teach my teenager how to sew!
I just got 2 small BabyLok machines for 2 of my grandchildrens families and had 2 GD out for sewing lessons as they want to learn how to make clothes for there American girl dolls and just came across this and it sounds ideal to teach them from. They are cute outfits that they will like making!!!
This looks like a perfect book to use to help teach my daughter to sew, and learn about some new techniques and products! I love it!
As soon as I saw this book I ordered it. Never read the blog far enough to realize they were giving away prizes. My granddaughter collects American Girl dolls so would be a great project to get started on. I remember when dolls clothes were so tiny they were hard to sew but this makes it look easy. I like the fusible gathering tape. Great idea..I love Riley Blake coordinating fabrics.

I learned to sew making Barbie doll clothes. (This was when you only had one Barbie and wanted lots of clothes to dress her in!) I don’t think I ever lost that wish. I use the excuse that I am making doll clothes for my future granddaughter(s), but the truth is, I still love making them!! It looks like Nancy has come up with a great pattern!!
Such cute doll clothes! I am hopeful that I have a great neice on the way and it would be fun to sew some of these for her.
What a great book and CD with such fun ideas for doll clothes. With a new granddaughter, I am looking forward to sewing clothes for her dolls, continuing the tradition that started with sewing for my dolls as a young girl, and then sewing for my daughters. Looking forward to seeing more fun ideas!

I have a 6 year old granddaughter who loves to sit on my lap and help me sew. We would love to make clothes for our doll, who does not yet have home-made clothes. We need to get busy on this project.

Got to see one episode of Nancy’s doll clothes sewing…this certainly would be a fun guide to have! My niece and I have been making a few items for her American Girl doll. I know she would enjoy making more!
I especially enjoyed this show,Nancy, and I then ordered the book! Joan Hinds seemed to be thinking of me by simplifying the “flat” patterns so nicely. I love the almost-instant results!
I love this idea – I’ve been hoping to sew with my oldest this summer!
The Fuse-N-Gather sounds great! I sure could use some of that with my sewing.

I don’t know who has more fun – making the doll clothes or watching my granddaughters playing with them. I can’t wait until they are old enough for me to teach them how to sew.
I am a Grammy and still love making doll clothes. I have my very own American Girl doll (Felicity — a gift from an older friend who got her for the historical aspect and later had to downsize her home), so I would enjoy trying these patterns out. Several of my granddaughters have the dolls as well. Such fun!
This would be such fun to use for making doll clothes with the grandnieces, especially the oldest one.
So happy to see this. Some patterns can be so time consuming-almost as long as it takes to sew a child size!
Great Blog post! I have no daughters or grand daughters yet! But I love to make doll clothes for my friends children and grandchildren.
What quick work to make play magic for a child’s best
friend. This will be a welcome addition to the patterns
for doll clothes(circa 1950-1960) that I found when sorting through my mother’s pattern stash.
I bought the book as soon as I saw the show! It’s so well done, the clothes truly are quick and easy but look like they took a long time. My daughters and I are having a lot of fun making clothes for their dolls! I love the idea of the blog tour, I am enjoying seeing what others have done.

Thanks for the help in sewing doll clothes. I had to make Barbie doll clothes for Christmas(requested) but now we are also playing with 18″ dolls and they are so much easier to dezine and sew. Cay
I got this book as soon as I saw it on SWN. Made 4 doll outfits for Christmas for my granddaughter who is 6 now. The best part was that I made her a few new outfits for going to Kindergarten in the fall and so I made the doll outfits with the scraps! She loved them both. I am sure this blog tour will be very inspiring. Can’t wait!
Thanks Nancy and Joan!
I have already started my Christmas sewing and this will come in handy for my 3 granddaughters who love thier American Dolls.
Love this blog. I am already looking for Christmas gifts for 3 of my granddaughters love American Dolls.
Saw the show on PBS and ordered the pattern book and DVD….made my granddaughter several outfits for her birthday….This made me dust off my serger which had not been used for a while…
How timely, Nancy! Christmas is just around the corner….if you intend on sewing gifts, that is! Since my three grands love their AG dolls, this book will be very worth having. And, the cute inspirations from the outfits…loving it! Fuse ‘n Gather, where have you been all my life???? Thanks, Nancy
Thank you. This should help me to get my contribution to our smocking guild raffle done early this year.
I’ve had a wardrobe for an 18″ doll on my “to do” list for the last several years. I wanted to enter it in the county fair but just haven’t taken the time to get it done. Maybe, with your blog inspiring me, I can do it for next year. I love this whole blog thing. I made several of the e-tablets prompted by the last blog tour. Thank you keeping us inspired, Nancy!
Loved the show and book. Can’t wait to get started.
Fuse n’ Gather – what a great idea when working with small pieces of fabric for doll clothes!
Oh My! This could be the start of something really big! I’ve made one dress a few days after Doll Clothes Show # 1 on PBS (without the pattern) for my Granddaughter’s 8 ” doll. Thanks Nancy and Joan for this Huge Inspiration!
I have used this book and the clothes are easy and turned out great!
I teach kids to sew and the class to make clothes for their 18″ dolls is always a favorite, Making an outfit with just straight seams and a notion like the iron on gathering tape would be just the right project for the beginners.
My gd wants clothes for her new doll. I would like to make matching clothes for her. Any chance in the future that patterns for children might be included?
Can’t wait to see each person’s own style with everyday’s posts! Great book for everyone’s busy schedules.
Sewing With Nancy is my favorite sewing/quilting show and I watch it every weekday on WUSF. I loved the segments on 30-minute doll clothes and can’t wait to get started on some outfits, even though I don’t have a granddaughter yet. The blog tour is starting off like a ‘shop hop’ type of adventure. What fun!
Looking forward to this blog tour. I have been making doll clothes for my granddaughter’s doll and love the idea of seeing what others are creating with this book. By the way, love this book and the tv shows. Makes it so much easier. Thank You
Enjoyed the video – looking forward to seeing the other videos about the doll cloths. I’m always looking to learn something new.
My friend use to make doll clothes years ago and sold them at a farmers market for $.25 each.I started to make rag dolls and different outfits for them to wear.Using her patterns.Wow what a difference using the ideas from the “30 Minute Doll Clothes” TV series.I would love to win this giveaway. Thanks Nancy for showing this to us.
From the time I was a teenager (1960s) I made doll clothes to sell in a doll shop, then for my own daughters. With these easy tricks, I better start for my granddaughters. Thanks for sharing and the fun Blog Hop. Cute. Cute. Cute.
I bought the book and CD but have not used them. Thanks for the kick start to get me sewing for my three 6 year old granddaughters’ American Girl dolls.
These outfits are so cute. When my youngest daughter was little, she had one of the 18″ dolls and I made her clothes for it. These patterns are so much easier to do than what I used. Just love them. Thanks for all the work you put into these, Nancy.
I just saw the two 30 minute doll clothes shows on PBS! The outfits are so simple for such cute designs!! Wish I had these patterns when I was sewing doll clothes for my daughters
Great materials used on the dresses…so cute. And Yes…a pattern I can use my serger with. How easily they all come together. I love that gathering idea. I have seen you use that before and forgot about it, thanks for the reminder. I know a little girl that just loves her dolls, this would be perfect for her.
Our 18 month old GD wants to rock and dress her doll now. Soon she will be big enough for an 18″ doll with wardrobe. Will be following along for inspiration. Thanks to all.
This will be a fun tour! As with Ms. Zieman, I began sewing doll clothes. Time to come full circle!
These are so cute! I would love to use up some of my stash for these!
I can’t wait to work on these adorable outfits with my 10 year old granddaughter. She is already an enthusiastic and accomplished sewer. I’m sure she will come up with some interesting fabric and trim choices!
My granddaughter is 10 and she is learning to sew,she is going to be thrilled to be able to make these outfits! Thank-You!!

I am very excited! I just ordered some fuse & gather, and next am going to download your app! I made doll clothes for my dolls when I was a child, then as the mother of three girls and now I can make them for my granddaughter!
This is so exciting! I can’t wait to try out the Fuse n’ Gather.
What a great tour….I would love to make doll clothes….looking forward to the remaining tour….
I have learned so much from watching Nancy’s tv show. And I look forward to the remaining blogs to learn more. I have the doll book and dvd. The directions and tips are clear and I’ve made several of the outfits. The little girls love them for their 18″ dolls. Keep up the great presentations…
I’m almost 64 and still love making doll clothes. You make it so easy. Great way for someone to learn to sew.
I love making dolls and their own clothes, this looks like a great book for making them easier and faster. Great idea for Christmas charities too.
Debbie
Absolutely adorable!!! Looking forward to all the creativity! Love the dress you created Nancy & also for facilitating such a fun opportunity for us to enjoy! Thank You!
tabithagrace
I would love to be able to make some of these for my daughter’s dolls. Are the patterns adaptable to smaller sized dolls?
What fun the next 10 days are going to be! Am so looking forward to all of the individual creativity to be presented each day
I’m so excited about this “Blog Tour”. I was given a retired AG doll Samantha for my 5 year old daughter, but in shock with the AG store clothing prices. I realy want this book to make the outfits for her new used doll. I’m sure I’ll learn so much through this blog like the “Fuse ‘n Gather”. That is something I’ll buy right now. What an amazing product. I dislike gathering fabric and this will make it easy. Thank you so much for that tip.
This looks like a fun tour! I’ve always stayed away from doll clothes, thinking they’d be difficult since they are so small — and probably require large amounts of hand work. So I’m ready to be educated in this facet of sewing. Thanks!
Wow! Just in time to start Christmas sewing for that special little someone.
I just got an 18″ doll to sew for & watched the “30 Minute Doll Clothes” show. The show, and now this blog has really encouraged me to get busy making a wardrobe for the doll. Thanks Nancy for all you do.
Such a cute party dress! I have to get busy and make some of the outfits in your book.
I really enjoy your “30 Minute Doll Clothes” instructions, both on your PBS show and your blog. I’m looking forward to the next ten blogs for their tips and tricks! Oh! and their cuteness!
