Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day
Welcome to the Nancy Zieman blog! If you’ve found your way here from the Sew Mama Sew Give Away Day, I’m glad you could join us!
At the Sewing With Nancy production studio and in my office, we’re mindful of giving year round. From giving free patterns and tutorials to giving to the community through coordinated outreach sewing efforts, our hearts are filled with kindness.
This year, as part of the 2017 Sew Mama Sew Give Away Day, I’m giving away a collection of my three NEW quilt patterns along with a 22-piece fat quarter bundle of my NEW Garnet fabric. Coming soon to fabric stores, you’re the fist to see Garnet–my new line of quilting cottons for Penny Rose by Riley Blake Designs and my three new quilt patterns: Ferris Wheel Quilt, Dresden Fan Quilts and Nancy’s Spool Quilts! This gift is a $100 value.
Today, December 7, starting at 8:00 a.m. Central Time, Nancy Zieman the BLOG will be a part of a huge internet GIVEAWAY event coordinated by Sew, Mama, Sew! It’s a fun day of browsing through hundreds of blogs—each with a giveaway! This year GIVEAWAY Day will last six days, from December 7–13, 2015! We’ll announce the winner on Facebook!
To check out the list of other participating blogs, visit the Sew Mama Sew Blog.
It’s simple, and you have a chance at winning a prize. Here’s the rule, yes rule!
There’s only one rule for the giveaway!
Post a comment on my blog, by December 13 at 5 p.m. PST, telling us how you will sew to give in the new year. If you’re looking for volunteer and giving suggestions or ideas, visit Sew To Give™. Giveaway open to continental US residents only.
Follow Nancy Zieman on Facebook. I’ll be announcing the winner on my page on December 14, after the comments close.
This event is now closed. Congratulations to our winner, Janet DyRyckere!

I live in Tennessee. You may have heard about the fires in the Smokey Mountains. The fires have caused a lot of damage. People have lost their houses!! I would like to make a quilt for one family that has lost their home. I’m 56 years old and I have been sewing since I was 14 yrs. old. Although I have not made a quilt before I have made quilted pieces for other sewing projects. What a better way to start quilting than to make a quilt for someone else? A piece of love with every stitch! Thank you, Janet

I make sure that every foster child my sister has in her home goes home with a quilt. It keeps me and a friend busy but we get to put little faces to the quilts we get and it makes it all worthwhile.
Diana Hensley
This is so great. Giving something for a foster child that they can call their own is wonderful. I am in a group that makes duffel bags for foster children. It is a shame that foster children end up using a trash bag to carry their belongings. The stories I have heard how special these children feel when they have these bags to carry their belongings makes your heart feel good. That something so simple can mean the world to these special children.
God bless.

I right after the Louisiana flooding in August of this year, I rallied the sewing community to donate pillowcases to the children of the poorer flooded rural schools in Livingston parish. I was able to collect enough to supply 3 entire schools. It was so rewarding, the teachers and students were so appreciative of them. My friend and I also make cancer quilts, quilts for kids of fallen soldiers, and we also made one for the Baton Rouge police officer that survived the shooting. I crocheted red hats for the infants that are born in February 2017 for our local hospital. Whatever the year brings, whatever the need, I’m right there willing to pitch in or donate. That’s what we seamstresses and quilters do, we help with our needles, fabric and yarn!

Hello firstly I adore your products they are amazing and so easy to work with. I love them all. I am 17 years old and began crafting at 7 after being taught to sew by my Nana Mariah. Got into crafting even more after my mom died of her 3rd battle of Cancer in 2013. In 2015 my dad was murdered and my Nana entered a nursing home. I now visit her daily to craft. It has become such a hobby for us that after some of the other patients saw what we where doing and I now teach a class at the nursing home. We have named our group The Krafty Kare Bears . Recently it was pouring down raining and the car had broke down I had to catch a bus home. So I had to leave my equipment in the nursing home. The next day when I returned all of my supplies, die cutting machine, sewing machine, and all of our projects had been stolen. The projects where to be donated to a shelter for the children and residents as Christmas gifts.

Locally, we have a program that aids homeless teens. When you think of the homeless most of us don’t think of them being teens, but, sadly, there are many, for as many reasons. There is so much that could be sewn for them but for now I will be focusing on bags to contain what little they have as they search to find their place in life, praying with every stitch that the Father will keep them safe.

Just recently I saw a posted tutorial by Rob Appell showing how to make a long scarf out of cuddle fabric. I was so impressed by how warm and soft the scarf looked that I now want to make these for the homeless in my area. It was actually a comment on his post that got me to come to this idea. A woman said that she was teaching her daughter to sew and she was sewing the scarves for the homeless in her area. Don’t you love it when a child or young person wakes you up to a way to help others. With all that is going on in the world right now, this warmed my heart and goaded me on to do the same. She was my inspiration!
Denyse
I try to make dolls to give away at the holidays…even into the new year. I try to do it from scratch with the doll, clothes and hair so these fabrics would go a long way in helping with the dresses. Being able to send kits to Nigeria where I lived two years as a child has been a dream come true. The son and daughter-in-law of our native preacher there are both new medical doctors. It was absolutely wonderful after helping pay for their education to help them with their dream of providing free healthcare for the poor of their country. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Love coordinating fabrics to bring smiles for any age. Also have some cute patterns to do stuffed animals. Would like to try/donate for police to give to a child for something to hold on to when their world upside-down.
Pam Kent
Like many of the other sewers, I’d like to give away what I can create. As a professional costume designer for 30 years, I’m now trying to teach myself the art of quilting. I never thought there would be such a difference in the two disciplines; quilting vs. garment sewing! I’ve watched you for years and admire what you have created. Continued blessings and thanks for the opportunity to win such a pretty collection of fabrics as well as the quilt patterns. P.S. Got your most recent catalog today!
MaryEllen
I’ve watched you on public television for years and I was happy to follow you on Pinterest. Quilting is my focus these days but I still sew the occasional costume or garment.
Kathy Cummings
I haven’t done any quilts for the animal shelters but I want to in 2017! Thank you .
Pat T.
(I know the joy of sewing/giving to others!… I’ve given away everything I’ve ever made! The only quilts of mine still with me are the ones unfinished!)
In the biggest group, at my church, we create prayer quilts… sharing love and comfort wherever needed.
On a smaller scale, I make cat and dog quilts and mats for a rescue shelter. (I benefit, too, as it’s a great way to use my scraps and trimmings, for the stuffing!)
For this next year, I want to look into what needs our local hospital NICU has…
**Thank you!**, Nancy, for all you do to inspire, teach, and share!!
Watching and learning from you… You were the one greatest influence in my sewing, and led me into quilting!

Wow! So many wonderful ideas to serve others. I love to sew. I love to quilt. I have made lap quilts for children with sensory issues that are in foster care, foster care post adoption program and the State Hospital. My 15 year old got out in Jul and my 13 went back a second time in august. This has been a difficult time and sewing has been my blessing. It has helped me to create not only quilts but peace in my heart. I love your show and have learned so much from you over the years.
Beverly
I’ve been involved through my local quilt guild in making quilts for various charities in my community for some time now, and will continue to do so in the coming year. But on a more personal note, my beloved daughter-in-law (who just became a quilter herself this year) has been diagnosed with cancer and in 2017 she and I will be working together to complete a very special quilt she has been wanting to make.
Helen in KY
My mother taught me early in my life the gift of using our talents and giving to the less fortunate. I am a participant in my church’s quilt group where we sew quilt tops, tie them and then they are given to Lutheran World Relief where they are sent to Third World countries. I also make pillow cases for the military who serve on our US Navy ships. I also send monetary assistance to this organization.
Leigh
I make quilts for nursing homes and jackets for dogs in animal shelters. Hanks for the opportunity !

I would not say I am a quilter (yet) but I do plan on joining a group in January when my work schedule changes, and I know they donate pillowcases to a nearby children’s hospital. I can’t imagine not participating!

I just found out about a Project Linus group in our area and my goal for the new year is to spend time sewing with that group. I hope they can use some of the I Spy charms that I have been collecting. Thanks for the giveaway of your beautiful fabrics!
Melody Hibbitts
I am somewhat new to quilting. I have always done sewing, but after finding Sewing with Nancy on my local PBS station, I was inspired to make a simple Irish chain quilt for my 86 year old mother. Since I have so few quilts to share, I haven’t been able to donate anything so far. I do belong to a crafting group that donates to breast cancer research. I have plans to make a quilt for them. Thank you Nancy! I absolutely love your shows!
Nancy Zieman
Melody,
Thank for the compliment!
Breanna Sackrey

My guild has a comfort quilt program that donates quilts to Habitat for Humanity and other programs. Last year I made 4 quilts for the program, and I will continue to participate by making quilts for the program.
Sandra Timmons
I sew for my family and friends. I also sew for my neighbors. I enjoy making quilts for them but it is because I do it with lots of love and not because I am asking for money. It’s done in my own way and in my own timeframe. Because of this reason my quilts are never for sale. I love red. Red is just simply a beautiful color and I can see myself making a quilt for me for my very own. I would like that. Thank you for being a part of the SMS and the chance to try and win those 3 brand new quilt patterns and yes, that new red line of fabric. Wishing you Happy Holidays.

I gave away 12 quilts this year and hopefully by the end of next year I’ll be able to say the same once again. Mostly I just give to those of my huge family and group of friends & their family where I see a need. It always feels good!
Teresa Ayars
I inherited my mom’s stash when I had to put her into a nursing home. I started quilting using panels and fabrics from her stash. I make items such as wall hangings, throws and baby quilts for organization to use in raffles and fund raisers. They’re not elaborate however each is allowing me to improve my sewing skills. I also try to use my mom’s fabrics in each project. This way not only am I giving to the group so is my mom.
Kara
I quilt constantly-it’s so relaxing after a stressful day to crest something-and I typically give the quilts away. They go to the kids and grandkids, get raffled off for causes I support and the rest I donate, except for a few I have not been able to part with…
Linda
I make quilts as gifts. Your beautiful collection would be such a joy to work with. Red is my favorite color! I can’t imagine a quilt without it.

I will be sewing for my son’s school fundraiser.
Karen O.
I just lost my mother this Autumn. Parkinson’s and Dementia changed the Mother I loved. She had been the one to give me the love of sewing, creating, and giving. In her final years she could no longer create for others. She was always cold and covered up with throws. I want to share my love for her this coming year by sewing lap quilts for those in nursing homes so they can be wrapped in the warmth of love, too.
Mercedes Alexander
I plan to give quilts to school fundraisers, plus participate in my guilds neonatal quilts.

Pillowcases are one of my favorite things to make and give away. I also make soft fabric dolls and baby quilts to give to a local ministry, Cornerstone, to women who decide to keep their babies. Recently I donated a quilt to Child Evangelism Fellowship to auction and raise money for the ministry. These things give me great joy since God is the one who gave me the gift of sewing and quilting!
Hazel Davidson
My passion is to make quilts for babies. For this coming year, I hope to donate quilts to our local food bank where essential needs are met on a daily basis. These quilts will be blessed with the Bible scripture, Jeremiah 29:11 which assures “a hope and a future”.

The 2 areas where I plan to sew to give involve pillowcases – 1,000,000 pillowcase challenge and making pillowcase dresses for little girls in Africa. As a busy working Mom, time is short but these sew up quickly. They are also both great projects to use up some fun fabrics I have in my stash, left over from when my children were young.
BetsyD.
The fabric is beautiful! I love to make thank you gifts for people who have done a favor or to encourage someone.
Beverly Smith
I belong to a group at our church, Sew Many Blessings. We meet monthly and make various projects for preemies, nursing home patients, cancer patients, mittens for the annual coat drive. It is a good time to share with other crafters and use our talents to help those with a need.

As a new quilter ( 4 years and STILL learning..LOL)… I find just being able to go to my stash for fabric problematic.
I just said to my husband I need to visit the fabric shop as I have no red (S) and I want to do a red and white pattern as my next charity project. Your give away came along just in time.
Roberta A
I’ve been sewing for family for years. Lately I’ve started making purses and gave one to a friend who was very happy with it. Want to make more to give away. Also, this coming year I would like to make lap quilts or something for the Wounded Warriors Project or Quilts of Valor.
Ellen
I liked your suggestion, “ugly quilts.” I’m newer to sewing and a bit of a perfectionist. I am often dissatisfied with my quilts after I’m done. But other people who are cold may not be so particular that the seams do not match. Since I live close to the US border, there are a few organizations looking for blankets for the refugees. So I am giving them the finished quilts. Thanks for the suggestion.
Karen Payton
Im new to quilting. My husband is head of our chruch nursing home ministry so my daughter and I make crafts & small sewn items for them each year.

Come and join us, if you’re in the area.

Thank you, Nancy, for all your lessons, sewing, quilting, embroidery and Nancy’s Corner, learned about Ryan’s Case for Smiles, formally Conkerr Cancer. Went through my stash, brought new fabric, made over 60 pillowcases, donated to Motts Children’s Hospital, University of Michigan.
Have been sewing for 47 years, taught my granddaughter how to sew, last year, made cage covers for the Humane Society, she earned the Girl Scout’s Sliver Award.
The new quilt patterns, Dresden Fan, Ferris Wheel and the Spool, along with your beautiful Garnet fabric, will make a gorgeous quilt, no matter which pattern is used.
Have read many books, magazines, watched your shows, have plenty of knowledge but have never made a quilt; therefore, excited to make my first quilt with the new quilt patterns and Garnet fabric, donating the quilt to Quilts for Kids and take the scraps, make pillowcases, donating them to Motts Children’s Hospital.

This past year I challenged myself to make as many quilts as possible from my fabric stash. As of today, I completed nine quilts of various sizes for and gave them as gifts. I completed nine quilt tops and donated them to Helping Hands of the Omaha Quilt Guild, the group I quilt with regularly. The emptier my stash gets the happier I am knowing someone has a warm quilt. I plan on continuing this challenge into 2017, and can’t wait to see what quilts I can pull out of my stash!

Oh, my, I am happy to join the list of ladies who donate quilts. From 1 and 1/2 inch squares to orphan blocks nothing goes to waste. Currently am working on quilt for someone as an appreciation gift; it will be done early in the new year. Love your spool quilt pattern.

I’d like to finish a couple of kids quilts for the Battered Women’s Shelter. I’d also like to finish a table runner for my sister.

I sew a lot of small bags and totes. I donate these to fundraisers. I like small things – they give me such a feeling of accomplishment when they are done.

I like to make small bags and totes to give to fundraisers and auctions.

I like this. Right now, I’m pledging to “sew to give” chemo hats to cancer patients. I think the colors in this fabric line would make beautiful hats that any woman would enjoy wearing given the circumstances. Thanks for always having charitable sewing spotlights on Sewing with Nancy and as part of your blog.

My main Sew to Give project for the year will be to participate in the Sewing Weekend Challenge. I have made something for the past 3 years and I love knowing that something I have made is helping support a good cause.

I hope to finish a plethora of quilt projects in 2017, including Halloween and Christmas quilts for my grandchildren. Here’s to hope!

I sewed for two groups, Delightful Quilters , and Stitchin’sisters. We make quits for many local organizations for the less fortunate people in our community. This year we supported 12 agency with over 100 quilts
The Stitchin’sisters group we sew item for a boutique every fall, and the proceeds go to local community agency’s. This year we made over a $1000 in our little boot. Most of fabric is donated to us plus we have one thrifts shopper that finds good fabrics at Goodwill, Savers, etc.
Sewing for charity is very fulfilling for me

Amazing things can be made from the scrap box. My bucket list is long as I am a relatively new quilter and my sense of joy is at its highest in my sewing room. My priority is to complete my UFO’s then make several pet beds. Nancy has inspired me once again – I will make mug rugs for cute last minute gifts.

I love to sew and volunteer to repair, tailor, and sew formals for the girls in a sorority type group for girls between the ages of 11 and 20, that I am a mentor in. I want to make pillow cases for the million pillowcases project and pillowcases dresses for Africa.

I make gifts for family and friends. I would like to make a few items to sell and some to donate to a local charity over this next year. This collection of fabric is very pretty. Thanks for offering this giveaway.

For my 2017, I plan on making something for myself. I am a busy working mother, grandmother, daughter and favorite aunt. I make, craft, redo, fix, repair and bandaid booboos on quilts, clothing, rugs, curtains and toys all year. I decided that I want something for me and 2017 is that year.

Wow! Am so impressed and inspired by all the caring and generous folks that have commented on this blog! I have so much fabric in my stash and my goal is to make a huge dent in it by sewing more little dresses for Africa, Some quilts, perhaps some mittens and hats. I hope to keep busy during the long winter and put my time and talents to use for others. My husband even plans to devote some time!

I am teaching a young grandma how to sew. As she advances in her sewing and quilting skills we will be making quilts for our church’s disaster relief program. The program has helped many families after fires, tornadoes and floods. I am happy to contribute to the efforts.

This year I plan to make at least one “serger project” each month to expand my skills. And at least one small practice project per month to learn/improve my quilting skills.

I plan to sew for U.S. Veterans. Our community is in the process of furnishing a number of “little houses” for veterans….every house needs a quilt and future houses will, as will. That is where my efforts will go.

Love the give away. I could get a head start on next years Comfort Quilts.

I make a few quilts for the baby pantry in my town upnorth Michigan. Back in the 70’s when I had my baby no one helped me with baby items and a quilt is such a loving item to receive.
