Welcome to the Nancy Zieman blog! If you’ve found your way here from the Sew Mama Sew Give Away Day, I’m glad you could join us!

At the Sewing With Nancy production studio and in my office, we’re mindful of giving year round. From giving free patterns and tutorials to giving to the community through coordinated outreach sewing efforts, our hearts are filled with kindness.

This year, as part of the 2017 Sew Mama Sew Give Away Day, I’m giving away a collection of my three NEW quilt patterns along with a 22-piece fat quarter bundle of my NEW Garnet fabric. Coming soon to fabric stores, you’re the fist to see Garnet–my new line of quilting cottons for Penny Rose by Riley Blake Designs and my three new quilt patterns: Ferris Wheel Quilt, Dresden Fan Quilts and Nancy’s Spool Quilts! This gift is a $100 value.

I am fairly new to quilting, but I did participate in a forum quilt for children a month or so ago. They are planning to do this again so I will continue to do that. Also, I would like to find other quilt related things to donate to, perhaps Wounded Warrior Project has something. I want to check that out.

All but two of the quilts I have made have bee gifts and all the ones I have planned are also to be given away, so I guess I give quilts all the time! I love giving to those I love! Your fabric is beautiful! The colors are so rich and patterns are unique. So glad you found time to do this amongst all your other creativities! Thanks for the giveaway! I don’t do facebook so I hope if I win you will email me.

I “sew to give” 36 quilts each year for Quilts for Kids, as well as pants for little boys in Appalachia through TLC Ministries, nightgowns and receiving blankets for HUB and CareNet missions and lap robes for veterans. I’m thankful I can use my love of sewing to benefit others.

I am a member of Mammoth Lakes Hospital Auxiliary in Mammoth Lakes, CA. We run a thrift store and the earnings go to buying equipment and educational programs for our tiny rural hospital. We budget $180,000 per year. We are entirely run by volunteers. I make American Girl Doll Clothes (approx. 180 to date this year) and also assorted pin cushions and jewelry holder dress forms. The hospital is essential to our community and many visitors we have every year.

Through my quilt guild, I make at least two quilts a year that will go to local nursing homes or kids in hospitals through the Linus program. I also make preemie blankets (flannel on one side and cotton on the other) that the guild distributes to the local hospitals. Additionally, I create blocks for Covered in Love, sponsored by Kat and Cat Quilts, and do. Good Stitches charity bee in their Cheer circle. I always find a cause or two to donate a quilt or block to throughout the year; this year I made a quilt for Qulits for Pulse sponsored by the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild.

I live in Tennessee. You may have heard about the fires in the Smokey Mountains. The fires have caused a lot of damage. People have lost their houses!! I would like to make a quilt for one family that has lost their home. I’m 56 years old and I have been sewing since I was 14 yrs. old. Although I have not made a quilt before I have made quilted pieces for other sewing projects. What a better way to start quilting than to make a quilt for someone else? A piece of love with every stitch! Thank you, Janet

    • Diana Hensley
      December 8, 2016

This is so great. Giving something for a foster child that they can call their own is wonderful. I am in a group that makes duffel bags for foster children. It is a shame that foster children end up using a trash bag to carry their belongings. The stories I have heard how special these children feel when they have these bags to carry their belongings makes your heart feel good. That something so simple can mean the world to these special children.
      God bless.

I right after the Louisiana flooding in August of this year, I rallied the sewing community to donate pillowcases to the children of the poorer flooded rural schools in Livingston parish. I was able to collect enough to supply 3 entire schools. It was so rewarding, the teachers and students were so appreciative of them. My friend and I also make cancer quilts, quilts for kids of fallen soldiers, and we also made one for the Baton Rouge police officer that survived the shooting. I crocheted red hats for the infants that are born in February 2017 for our local hospital. Whatever the year brings, whatever the need, I’m right there willing to pitch in or donate. That’s what we seamstresses and quilters do, we help with our needles, fabric and yarn!

Four of my nieces and nephews are adopted and in honor of them, I contacted our local foster care coalition to make fleece blankets and pillow cases for the children in care. They were pleasantly surprised. I gave them 4 blankets recently and two to brothers in foster care in my neighborhood.

I already make pillowcases to give to the women’s abuse shelters and make quilts for Quilts for Kids and Project Linus. Adding the foster care coalition to my list of giving has stirred some new excitement in me.

Your Garnet fabrics are just beautiful. I love the color garnet.

Hello firstly I adore your products they are amazing and so easy to work with. I love them all. I am 17 years old and began crafting at 7 after being taught to sew by my Nana Mariah. Got into crafting even more after my mom died of her 3rd battle of Cancer in 2013. In 2015 my dad was murdered and my Nana entered a nursing home. I now visit her daily to craft. It has become such a hobby for us that after some of the other patients saw what we where doing and I now teach a class at the nursing home. We have named our group The Krafty Kare Bears . Recently it was pouring down raining and the car had broke down I had to catch a bus home. So I had to leave my equipment in the nursing home. The next day when I returned all of my supplies, die cutting machine, sewing machine, and all of our projects had been stolen. The projects where to be donated to a shelter for the children and residents as Christmas gifts.

Christmas time seems to get the largest amount of quilts completed but we also give the rest of the year as well. I love your new fabric, and it’s in one of my favorite colors, red.

I made Little Dresses for Africa this year, which gave me a chance to learn how to use the Baby Lock embroidery machine that was donated for our county’s 4-H sewing classes (I’m one of the volunteer teachers). I made a few using pillowslips, and ended up making several from yardage – so many more pattern and color options! I did decorative stitches to attach the straps and made a variety of pockets with pretty embroidery designs. Now I need to put an embroidery machine on my Christmas list!

Last year I started making care bags for Project Celebration here in NW Louisiana. Project Celebration houses women and children of domestic abuse. My mission group fills the bags with staples that women need when they leave home in a hurry like hair products, deodorant, soap, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc. We also send baby wipes and panties.
I will continue to make these bags for the new year. I’ve had some fabrics donated to help me out.
This past year I also made a lap top quilt for a veteran who is 95 years old. I hope to do that again. It was such a blessing to me!

Locally, we have a program that aids homeless teens. When you think of the homeless most of us don’t think of them being teens, but, sadly, there are many, for as many reasons. There is so much that could be sewn for them but for now I will be focusing on bags to contain what little they have as they search to find their place in life, praying with every stitch that the Father will keep them safe.

Just recently I saw a posted tutorial by Rob Appell showing how to make a long scarf out of cuddle fabric. I was so impressed by how warm and soft the scarf looked that I now want to make these for the homeless in my area. It was actually a comment on his post that got me to come to this idea. A woman said that she was teaching her daughter to sew and she was sewing the scarves for the homeless in her area. Don’t you love it when a child or young person wakes you up to a way to help others. With all that is going on in the world right now, this warmed my heart and goaded me on to do the same. She was my inspiration!

Pillowcases, pillowcases, pillowcases. Something to call your own, something to brighten up your space, something to soothe your head. Can almost sew in my sleep! Love coordinating fabrics to bring smiles for any age. Also have some cute patterns to do stuffed animals. Would like to try/donate for police to give to a child for something to hold on to when their world upside-down.

Like many of the other sewers, I’d like to give away what I can create. As a professional costume designer for 30 years, I’m now trying to teach myself the art of quilting. I never thought there would be such a difference in the two disciplines; quilting vs. garment sewing! I’ve watched you for years and admire what you have created. Continued blessings and thanks for the opportunity to win such a pretty collection of fabrics as well as the quilt patterns. P.S. Got your most recent catalog today!

(I know the joy of sewing/giving to others!… I’ve given away everything I’ve ever made! The only quilts of mine still with me are the ones unfinished!)
In the biggest group, at my church, we create prayer quilts… sharing love and comfort wherever needed.
On a smaller scale, I make cat and dog quilts and mats for a rescue shelter. (I benefit, too, as it’s a great way to use my scraps and trimmings, for the stuffing!)
For this next year, I want to look into what needs our local hospital NICU has…
**Thank you!**, Nancy, for all you do to inspire, teach, and share!!
Watching and learning from you… You were the one greatest influence in my sewing, and led me into quilting!

Wow! So many wonderful ideas to serve others. I love to sew. I love to quilt. I have made lap quilts for children with sensory issues that are in foster care, foster care post adoption program and the State Hospital. My 15 year old got out in Jul and my 13 went back a second time in august. This has been a difficult time and sewing has been my blessing. It has helped me to create not only quilts but peace in my heart. I love your show and have learned so much from you over the years.

I’ve been involved through my local quilt guild in making quilts for various charities in my community for some time now, and will continue to do so in the coming year. But on a more personal note, my beloved daughter-in-law (who just became a quilter herself this year) has been diagnosed with cancer and in 2017 she and I will be working together to complete a very special quilt she has been wanting to make.

I also make pillow cases for the military who serve on our US Navy ships. I also send monetary assistance to this organization.

I am somewhat new to quilting. I have always done sewing, but after finding Sewing with Nancy on my local PBS station, I was inspired to make a simple Irish chain quilt for my 86 year old mother. Since I have so few quilts to share, I haven’t been able to donate anything so far. I do belong to a crafting group that donates to breast cancer research. I have plans to make a quilt for them. I sew for my family and friends. I also sew for my neighbors. I enjoy making quilts for them but it is because I do it with lots of love and not because I am asking for money. It’s done in my own way and in my own timeframe. Because of this reason my quilts are never for sale. I love red. Red is just simply a beautiful color and I can see myself making a quilt for me for my very own. I would like that. Thank you for being a part of the SMS and the chance to try and win those 3 brand new quilt patterns and yes, that new red line of fabric. Wishing you Happy Holidays.

I inherited my mom’s stash when I had to put her into a nursing home. I started quilting using panels and fabrics from her stash. I make items such as wall hangings, throws and baby quilts for organization to use in raffles and fund raisers. They’re not elaborate however each is allowing me to improve my sewing skills. I also try to use my mom’s fabrics in each project. This way not only am I giving to the group so is my mom.

These things give me great joy since God is the one who gave me the gift of sewing and quilting!

I liked your suggestion, “ugly quilts.” I’m newer to sewing and a bit of a perfectionist. I am often dissatisfied with my quilts after I’m done. But other people who are cold may not be so particular that the seams do not match. Since I live close to the US border, there are a few organizations looking for blankets for the refugees. So I am giving them the finished quilts. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you, Nancy, for all your lessons, sewing, quilting, embroidery and Nancy’s Corner, learned about Ryan’s Case for Smiles, formally Conkerr Cancer. Went through my stash, brought new fabric, made over 60 pillowcases, donated to Motts Children’s Hospital, University of Michigan.

Have been sewing for 47 years, taught my granddaughter how to sew, last year, made cage covers for the Humane Society, she earned the Girl Scout’s Sliver Award.

The new quilt patterns, Dresden Fan, Ferris Wheel and the Spool, along with your beautiful Garnet fabric, will make a gorgeous quilt, no matter which pattern is used.

Have read many books, magazines, watched your shows, have plenty of knowledge but have never made a quilt; therefore, excited to make my first quilt with the new quilt patterns and Garnet fabric, donating the quilt to Quilts for Kids and take the scraps, make pillowcases, donating them to Motts Children’s Hospital.

I sew for Project Linus, I make dog beds for the local shelter, from my scraps and I make pillow cases for Operation Santa Claus.
We should remember even one act of kindness helps!

    Thank you for the give-away.

Each year I like to take on a new nonprofit sewing opportunity. That way I learn about the needs of others, keeps me from getting bored and I also can share the wealth of my giving. I am going to sew for veterans this year. Veteran’s needs in King, WI as there is a big hospital and retirement complex there.

In 2017 I will be donating fabric and sewing for Sewing with Deb. Deb has e sewing event twice a year in Kokomo Indiana. She collects fun fabrics and volunteers wash all the fabrics. Then at the events volunteers spend a day cutting, sewing, pressing, and packaging hospital style gowns for hospices patients in our area. 2016 was my first time to help with this initiative and is already on my calendar for 2017.
I also will be sewing for Quilts of Valor . I belong to a QOV group that meets at Rossville Quilts in Rossville Indiana. Most of our quilts are awarded to local area veterans.
I will again make stockings for food pantry clients as I have done for several years.
These are may way of giving back for all the blessings I have received.

I meet with a group of ladies each month and together we sew quilts for high school homeless students who often live in their cars, hold down jobs and go to school. We also make pet beds, pillow cases, lap blankets for seniors and receiving blankets for newborns. It is all done with love and hopefully brightens a day for someone who needs to be wrapped with love!

I will be making quilts for the homeless, and also will be starting a group to help women learn to sew. I’m no expert seamstress, far from it, but I can teach them the basics and how to maintain their machines. I will also be making “angel gowns” so that parents who have lost their precious infants will have a nice burial gown for their baby.

Every year I enter a large and small quilt in our local County fair. The following weekend is our Church Summer Festival Fundraiser in which I offer my 2 fair entries, ribbons attached, to be sold at auction. My quilts always yield lively bidding, particularly when accompanied by blue ribbons.

Oh, my, I am happy to join the list of ladies who donate quilts. From 1 and 1/2 inch squares to orphan blocks nothing goes to waste. Currently am working on quilt for someone as an appreciation gift; it will be done early in the new year. Love your spool quilt pattern.

I like this. Right now, I’m pledging to “sew to give” chemo hats to cancer patients. I think the colors in this fabric line would make beautiful hats that any woman would enjoy wearing given the circumstances. Thanks for always having charitable sewing spotlights on Sewing with Nancy and as part of your blog.

I sewed for two groups, Delightful Quilters , and Stitchin’sisters. We make quits for many local organizations for the less fortunate people in our community. This year we supported 12 agency with over 100 quilts
The Stitchin’sisters group we sew item for a boutique every fall, and the proceeds go to local community agency’s. This year we made over a $1000 in our little boot. Most of fabric is donated to us plus we have one thrifts shopper that finds good fabrics at Goodwill, Savers, etc.
Sewing for charity is very fulfilling for me

Amazing things can be made from the scrap box. My bucket list is long as I am a relatively new quilter and my sense of joy is at its highest in my sewing room. My priority is to complete my UFO’s then make several pet beds. Nancy has inspired me once again – I will make mug rugs for cute last minute gifts.

For my 2017, I plan on making something for myself. I am a busy working mother, grandmother, daughter and favorite aunt. I make, craft, redo, fix, repair and bandaid booboos on quilts, clothing, rugs, curtains and toys all year. I decided that I want something for me and 2017 is that year.

I make a few quilts for the baby pantry in my town upnorth Michigan. Back in the 70’s when I had my baby no one helped me with baby items and a quilt is such a loving item to receive.
