A Handy Sewing Notion with 5 Uses in 1 Compact Tool

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I was recently asked if the  5-in-1 Sliding Gauge could really live up to its name, providing help with five sewing and quilting tasks. My response was, I certainly hope so! That question prompted me to go to my sewing studio and check out the little tool that I use every time that I sew or quilt. Here are my findings on how I use the gauge.

Close-up look at the design

  • It’s a six-inch ruler, marked in 1/8″ increments (Left side of ruler begins at 1″ and ends at 6″ inches. Right side of ruler is reversed, beginning at 6″ and ending at 1″).
  • The cursor slides and then locks into position with a push of a button. The top of the cursor shows the selected measurement.

5 in 1 Sliding Gauge Nancy Zieman

  • The top of the gauge and cursor has 1/4″ markings.
  • The width of the ruler is 5/8″.
  • Each side of the ruler is 1/4″.
  • The open space in the center is 1/8″.
  • Finally, the end of the gauge features a compass pivot point—that’s a very unique feature. Details to come later!

Here are my five favorite uses for the 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge

1.  Space and Mark Buttonholes:

  • Slide the cursor and set it to the measurement the distance between buttonholes.
  • Align the edge of the ruler to the center marking.
  • Position the top edge of the gauge to the placement at the of top the buttonhole.
  • Trace the top edge of the gauge the length of your buttonholes. Next, trace the top edge of the cursor.
  • Slide the gauge down. Align the top of gauge to the second buttonhole marking. Again, trace. Repeat the process until all buttonholes are marked.

5-in-1 sliding gauge2. Measure Seam Allowances:

  • Use the width of the ruler  to mark and check garment seams. It’s 5/8″ wide, how convenient!
  • Or, use the ruler to achieve a truly accurate 1/4″ seam when changing the needle position.

5 in 1 sliding gauge3. Hem Gauge:

  • Slide the cursor and set it to your pattern’s hem width measurement. Remember the gauge locks in place!
  • Fold up the hem and press or pin.

4.  Circle Compass:

  • With the push of a button, slide the cursor to desired marking equaling the circle radius, or half your circle size.
  • Hold the compass pivot with a pin or stiletto/awl.
  • Insert the point of a marking tool into the cursor opening, and draw circles and arches.
  • Mark directly onto fabric, template material, or freezer paper.

5.  T-Gauge:
When you need to measure both length and width at the same time, use the T-Gauge feature.

  • The top edge of the gauge measures 2-1/2″—the numbered hash marks along the top edge making it a convenient marking tool.
  • Mark and measure both length and width at the same time.

Ta da!

    January 10, 2015

I’d like a never-ending supply of size 90 sewing machine needles. I already have the 5 in 1 Sliding Gauge [much better than a string and a tack for drawing circles]. If I won it, I’d give it to my sister-in-law, who’s looking at retirement and will have more time to sew!

Thanks Nancy and Clover! THIS is next on my list now… I would have purchased yesterday while at the store had I read about it yesterday! Love the circle feature.

I have been sewing for awhile, mostly shirts. People always say how nice they look. I always tell them not to look to close because I can’t sew a straight line. I have recently started making quilts and I, believe that this handy dandy tool would help me with both shirts and quilts. I love watching your show. It gives me such great ideas on my next projects, thank you

I didn’t know you could do so much with the 5 in one ruler. I have the french curve but dont to sure how to use it. I would love to have a point turner, they seem to be so handy for turning tubes. Thank you for all your info.

    January 10, 2015

I actually have one of these. It’s a great tool, so much better than the little seam gauge I grew up with. If I win one, it’ll go to the 4-H sewing program. The top “notion” on my wish list? A BabyLock sewing machine!!!!

  • Susan McBean
    January 10, 2015

Well, the 5 in 1 tool, of course ! I didn’t even know I needed it til I saw what it could do ! I have several of the regular little 6 inch rulers with the red slide on it…and it slides all over the place. Would be great to have one that locks ! Thanks.

  • Marie McDermott
    January 10, 2015

Of course I want the gauge as I want to try the circles with it. My wish list always has any new notion that comes out to make my quilting and sewing more efficient

  • Brenda

The 5 in one tool is so much better than the old design of the one I have. From looking at the tips you showed of ways to use it, I HAVE to have one!

  • Pam R
    January 10, 2015

5 in 1 solves my problem. Have an old (very old) gauge that slips when measuring hem, plus the soft metal hob ends out of shape easily! Ooops!

  • Carol
    January 10, 2015

My favorite new tool is a muslin covered pressing bar, it’s 18 inches long, and when you press seams open, they lie so flat..it’s wonderful. The 5 in 1 could be a new favorite. If I could have anything new for my studio, and cost were no object, I would want a sewing cabinet that had a fold out behind the machine space. Then I wouldn’t have to keep taking out tables to hold the weight of quilts while attaching bindings etc.

  • Lois Stimax

My wish list notion is the 5 in one gauge! Thanks for your blog.

  • Mary Lou
    January 10, 2015

I’ve been using the old fashioned 6″ ruler for years and it’s really handy by the iron for marking hems and seam allowances. This one seems to do so much more, with buttonholes and circles, that I may have to upgrade and retrain.

  • Nadine kuhlemeier
    January 10, 2015

This looks like a wonderful tool to have and start using

  • Sue H
    January 10, 2015

    January 10, 2015

I already have 5 in 1 Sliding Gauge, which I use a lot, and I thank you for the information. I printed it to keep in my reference notebook . I would like to win one for my daughter, who finally has decided to take up sewing again, and has to ‘start over’ in the Notions Department.

  • Darlene Price
    January 10, 2015

Like everyone said, I didn’t know I needed it until I saw your blog.

  • Lana Metheny
    January 10, 2015

I think I would use this a lot when measuring how to space bag handles it’s very important they be placed at the proper space to make the bag user friendly the others are, I hem a lot of pajama pants I love making them or turning under the edges of applique pieces to have that exact measurment for quality piecing. and the last, to measure the exact center of a fabric placement for an embroidery design. sometimes finding the center of windowpane shirts etc. is a pain because you’ve got marks for the center horizontally and vertically

  • Tina
    January 10, 2015

The 5-in-1 tool is on the top of my wishlist now!! WOW! It does just about everything! Love the buttonhole idea and the circles!

  • Julie Brooks

  • Donita Hippensteel
    January 10, 2015

I would love this 5 in 1 Sliding gauge. I love the feature of clicking in place. With the 3 older type of gauges I have I always have to put a small amount of tape on the slide to be sure it does not move when trying to mark an accurate seam, etc. What a great tool!

  • Marilyn
    January 10, 2015

I use my metal one all the time but this 5-in-one has the other features I would be able to use. Love it!

  • Karen L.
    January 10, 2015

After reading your post, this gauge is at the top of my list! It sure has some great features. I really like all the measurements it has “built in” but I really like the idea of the pivot point for making circles in many different sizes.

  • Holly Wade
    January 10, 2015

I gotta have 1 of these!!

  • Denise Dolezal
    January 10, 2015

The 5 in 1 notion is now on the top of my wish list! I’m still using my 6″ metal slide ruler that I used in high school (35+ years ago)…time for an upgrade!

  • Michelle
    January 10, 2015

    Wonder clips.

  • Rebecca McKenna
    January 10, 2015

I would like the 5 in 1 gauge – far most useful then my regular seam gauge. On my wish list for the past four years is a leather thimble – the flexibility and strength seem far superior then my old metal, but hard working, thimble.

  • Martha Ford
    January 10, 2015

Definitely on my must have list.

  • Baye
    January 10, 2015

    January 10, 2015

I would love to win the 5 in1 ruler. I have seen these but didn’t

  • Jeanne
    January 10, 2015

After reading this, the 5-in-1 tool is at the top of my list! Love the idea of the button holding the slider in position.

  • Marie Williams
    January 10, 2015

I have several of the sliding gauges and though I use them often, one of the things I least like is the fact that I must always check my measurements because they slide so freely. I’m putting the locking slide on my shopping list, this tool will be priceless for hand hemming. I also like the pivot point I’m not sure what I’ll use it for now, but you can never have to many tools.

  • Virginia
    January 10, 2015

The 5 in 1 gauge is a must have. Then I need a new seam ripper by clovers.

  • Carolyn Vickery
    January 10, 2015

The 5 in one gauge! I especially like the circle drawing aspect. I currently use an old compass I found at my dad’s house but it sure is sharp! I have also have used lids off of various containers but sizes are limited. Circles are addicting especially when using all the decorative stitches on today’s machines.

  • Debbie Ferrin
    January 10, 2015

I do alterations from my home and am in constant use of my six inch seam gauge. However, it has seen it’s day. I would love to own a 5 in 1 sliding gauge someday, it’s on my wish list! I would sing its praises. Sounds like a neat, handy tool.

  • Paula Y.

    January 10, 2015

This looks like a great tool to help our accuracy in many venues.

  • Maureen
    January 10, 2015

Funny you highlight this tool – I’ve been thinking the 5-in-1 is one of tools I DON’T have that I could really use! I like my Clotilde Sewing Gauge because it’s small and measures 14 different lengths quickly. The 5-in-1 looks particularly nice because it can be locked into the desired measure-my old metal sewing gauges slide all over the place.

  • Kathy Huffman
    January 10, 2015

I bought one of these when it first came out several years ago and I do really like it. My favorite feature is that it locks and the pointer does not slide out of place. My second favorite feature is that it has a long flat area to guide your marking. Third, one side counts up and the other side counts down and the bright green color makes it easy to find when I need it. This is a well thought out design and a great tool.

I want the 5 in 1 sliding guage. My old fashioned metal gizmo doesn’t do half what this one does. Wow!

  • Berenice
    January 10, 2015

Boy, that sure beats my grandmother’s old hem gauge. I can just imagine what she would have done with all those features. Looks like I’ll have to upgrade!

I have one bought it. two years ago after I saw it. on your tv show

  • Alice Neely
    January 10, 2015

About thirty years ago I bought a metal tool to measure my hem widths, I am short and have to alter skirt lenghts, pants legs and even sleeve lengths sometimes, I have used my little metal tool so much that it is bent and almost useless, it has also caused me a few minor disastors by causing me to get uneven hems. As you can see I really need to upgrade to the 5 in 1 sliding gauge, so it is at the top of my want list.

    January 10, 2015

This gauge is the best I’ve found. Sure beats the old gauge that is still in my sewing stuff for high school Home EC. Great concept. Thanks

    January 10, 2015

I need non slip grips for my ruler and it looks like this ruler would work to help me get an accurate seam as I can set the foot of the sewing machine down and measure from the needle over.

I have been trying to make circles for different projects!
Will have to get one for it sure would make it ease!

    January 10, 2015

I have the 5-in-1 tool and didn’t know all the uses for it. Thank you, Nancy , for designing a tool that saves space, time and money and explaining and showing the uses. I would like to have the Clover tool that was shown on your blog, I believe, by the Lazy Girl Designs. It made beautiful corners with binding by cutting, measuring and ironing directly on this little metal tool. Its on my mental list of sewing notions. I don’t write the list down any longer because I start to think I can’t sew until I have all the “helps”. Thanks for staying true to your roots by being yourself, being honest and treating us with respect.

  • Bev M
    January 10, 2015

I would like to have a 5-in One Gauge. The wider T top would be a big improvement over standard gauges for trimming and turning up hems. The locking feature also sounds good, because over time, the plastic cursors get loose or fall out. When I taught school, students would turn the cursors upside down, remove them, and/or bend the rulers!

    January 10, 2015

This slide gauge has just moved into ‘top’ position on my most wanted list.
I’ve been using an old, old gauge with one broken arm for just about ever.
I had three ‘top’ buys listed for during my visit to AZ – the four special rotary cutter blades, this slide gauge and wonder clips. I bought the blades online and received them yesterday!!!! (I’ve wanted these for so long and now I am excited and looking forward to using them on fleece projects).
If I should be lucky and win the 5-in-1 gauge I’ll return to South Australia with all my most wanted notions as well as the 4th on my list, the Cat on a Quilt Puzzle.

I should say my seam ripper, but not always for the obvious reason. I also use it to help guide fabric more like a stiletto. Followed by my thread clippers. Those two are always at the ready. Your 5 in 1 tool has been on my want list for awhile. I do various types of sewing and quilting and would definitely put this tool to use. Thank you for the chance to enter.

I would love one of these 5 in 1 sliding tools! I also saw a tool that helped with sewing diagonal but I think it got taken off the market. Clover made it and you had it on your website. When I went to order it all I got was that it was no longer available.

    January 10, 2015

Excellent information but don’t forget to mention that it can “grow” little feet! My first one walked in to my husband’s tool box and never returned. Your tutorial today showed the one thing I had missed about drawing accurate circles – the marking hole in the cursor! So obvious, yet I completely overlooked it. Thank you so much for the written and photographic explanations. Next on my wish list – the larger Wonder Clips (and more time to create, of course).

  • Sheila Kester

I had no idea it could do circles. I love Nancy’s show and save them until I can really concentrate on the contents. I actually bought this ruler from Nancy’s catalogue. In reorganizing my sewing room, I’ve misplaced it. Looked high and low for it and can not find it anywhere. I would love to have one to use on my quilting and sewing. Nancy is always my go to person for any question I have. Her books always have the answer to my questions. Thanks for all you teach us Nancy.

And the ability to have one tool, not five suits me just perfectly, and will fit in his pocket instead of a tool belt!

I don’t have anything on my “wish list” for now, as I recently purchased the ScanNCut. But I could certainly put this little gadget on my “wish list” … and winning it would be the “icing on the cake.”
Watch you on CreateTV (Comcast 204) whenever I know you are showing. Love your shows. Have many articles, booklets, DVD’s, etc., that you have put out throughout the years. January 10, 2015

I have the Queen size Super Slider on my Wish List, but now I have to add this little 5-in-1 tool. I have a couple of old hem gauges, but I love the wide top and movable bar to make sure you are square! Looks like a great tool and I would love to win one! Thanks!

I am starting to sew again after a long absence, this tool would be a great help to me. Things have changed so much I need suggestions for tools I should be on the lookout for.

  • Leslie J
    January 10, 2015

I would love to have the wonder clips. I’m new to quilting and have figured out that the clips might help me with my binding issues. I have seen the 5 in 1 tool and would never have guessed that one could do circles. I found another tool in the clearance aisle that I use for circles but his would be so much easier I think.

The 5 in 1 tool has been on my list for a long time. You have moved it to the top of the list!

  • Susan Nielsen
    January 10, 2015

Wow… I love the circle marker ability! And using it as a hem gauge… I currently drape a measuring tape over my shoulder and am always fumbling for that for measuring. Are you going to have a booth in Puyallup in February? Can I purchase it there?

  • Susan
    January 10, 2015

Hmmm, seems like a real handy dandy tool! Like the green colour too, it will be easy to find on my sewing table!

  • Lisa Hope
    January 10, 2015

It looks interesting to me the many uses, I am going to my dealer to see if she has used one. I like personal feedback as well, like the idea instead of my regular compass to make circles, but the feature I am most interested in is for an even seam allowance, believe it or not, I find that to be my hardest to achieve. Congrats to the winners! Please let us know if it truly does what it says, I wish to know if it is durable, and easy to use.
Thank you Nancy for being so awesome, and my go to gal for sewing advice/tricks/projects/many tips…. Stay on track!

I would LOVE one of these! I have always been hesitant to try button holes because of measuring the spacing, but WOW, this makes it sound so simple. I also like the compass feature (could have used this last weekend instead of twine and a straight pin!)

Looks like a very handy tool. Would love to have one.

love this new tool. The circle idea is great. my most coveted quilting tool is a sit down long arm machine.

  • Paula Steiner
    January 10, 2015

I have seen Nancy use this tool on her show & think it would make an awesome addition to my sewing room. Makes short work of marking half- & quarter-square triangles, too. But the other tool I really need is a wooden clapper. I tend to start working with my fabric before the seam setting has cooled & think this tool would solve that problem.

  • Lynne Deering
    January 10, 2015

Sounds like a very useful tool, would be great for so many jobs. Thanks for the offer.

  • Karen
    January 10, 2015

I’d love to have a dedicated sewing room, but if that’s not possible at this time, I could use different presses feet for my serger.

  • Ginny Wentworth
    January 10, 2015

I love my soft elastic covered neck lanyard for my thread clipping scissors. I can wear it without discomfort and never have to look around for my scissors.

The 5 in 1 tool is the only thing on my wish list. I didn’t know I needed it until you told me what to do with it.

  • Jan
    January 10, 2015

When going to retreats or just to help with the other sewing projects the 5 in 1 tool would be quick to grab and go. What a great tool!

    January 10, 2015

I’ve been thinking long and hard about the one you are telling us about. Haven’t gotten it yet, though. The other gadget on my list is a jean-a-ma-jig I think it’s called.
Love your blog. Lots of great information, as always……

My sewing center recently had a free demo on nifty notions. It did not demonstrate this notion but I will suggest they get these in their store. Really nice.

  • Marlyn
    January 10, 2015

I would like to have the circle maker you attach to the sewing machine bed. Stitching out perfect circles on my quilts would be fun! I don’t sew clothing much anymore, but can certainly see how the 5 in 1 gauge would be useful.

  • Peggy Tornberg
    January 10, 2015

I would love this gauge! I do a lot of pants hemming for my 4 grandchildren and this would be a great tool to have!

    January 10, 2015

I don’t think my previous post is shown so I try again! I want this 5-in-1 tool. I have an old one (it’s about 25 years old) but it doesn’t have as many uses. I would like to add this new one to my supply, as well as a pattern box to store all my patterns.

  • Liandre Hawkes
    January 10, 2015

A sharp unpicker /reverse sewer is always nearby ….also a very sharp embroidery scissors…….however, after reading about the 5in1 I do believe that it could become a firm favourite! Thanks for all your good ideas!

After seeing how many have commented, I have little faith that I will win, but here goes.
I have not ever won anything in my life, as I say, I used my luck when I won my husband. But would love to win the 5 in 1 tool. Have seen it in the stores, and after you showing how and what to use it on different projects, sold me on it.
Especiall the circles and arcs. Here is wishing me a blessing to win this time, new year and so new hope!
    Thanks Nancy!

  • judy morris
    January 10, 2015

Being a left-handed crafter/seamtress, I like the fact that the markings on the left-side and right-side of the ruler will NOT always be backwards. Depending on how the ruler is placed, one side will always be relevant. I’d like to add to my sewing basket.

Personally I like everything you teach us about on your TV show and offer on your website. You have never let me down yet. Everything you offer lives up to the expectations, and that is saying a lot, considering how many website offerings are out there. I always go to your website first. I have watched you on TV for so long, I feel like I know you, and if you say something is a worthy product-that’s good enough for me!

  • Sandra Reiter

    January 10, 2015

I would love to have this 5-in-1 tool in my kit for attending classes. I have learned to multi-task with many of my house chores so that I can make time to sew. To me, this tool fits right in with multitasking. Not only is it “time saving” but it’s also “space saving” when putting items together when taking a sewing project away from my sewing room. Thanks for sharing all the possibilities, Nancy!

  • Sherry Templer
    January 10, 2015

This tool looks great and the fact that you took the time to explain the uses makes me want one now. So far I haven’t received one of your tool I am not completely satisfied with. Love your show and website. Thanks Nancy

  • Sharon Nielsen
    January 10, 2015

This would be great to have! A lot of my sewing notions are probably about 50 yr old or more and it would be nice to have an undated piece to take the place of several of the worn old ones. Will probably purchase if you don’t draw my name.
    Thanks for the info.

I would love to have the Dresden plate templates. I’ve seen you use them on your show. I have your 5 and 1 ruler and use it often. I guess I need to use it more often. I was unfamiliar with al it’s uses. Thank You.

  • Robin H
    January 10, 2015

What a great notion!! I am teaching two of my oldest granddaughters to sew with the new computerized sewing machines I purchased for them, and this notion would be great when we start our lessons in a few weeks. I’m excited for them, but just as excited for myself. Amazed at the great notions available for us who sew at home!!!

    January 10, 2015

I use my 5 in 1 tool all the time. I suggest putting your name on it if you take it to class. Mine always seems to grow legs. I don’t need one now, but would get it for my friend who lost everything in a fire from lightening striking there home.

    January 10, 2015

Truly I enjoy your programs and thank you for your many good suggestions, ways and means of sewing. I turned 79 last year and am just getting back into sewing. For many years I raised my 6 children doing the usual sewing and also had a sick husband who passed on recently. I decided to remarry and now have motive and time to work some new ideas. Your 5 in 1 tool would be a good start on my new career as Great Grandma; sewing circles on a baby quilt would certainly be different than my usual 9 block.
Again, thank you for your programs; they’re really great ! ! !

I have the 5 in 1 sliding gauge but today I learned some new uses for it. The top of my wish list is Clover Mini Iron II. This would be so handy while sewing on the quilts I am making for my granddaughters. Love your blogs Nancy.

  • Patti Jo
    January 10, 2015

I’ve got the old metal slide gauge, but this one definitely has big improvements. On my wishlist is the Simflex Expanding Gauge. I don’t do many buttonholes, but I think it would be a great marking tool for free motion quilting.
Went to the Sewing Expo in Madison for the first time last year and loved it. Can’t wait for this years!!!

    January 10, 2015

    Nancy,
After quite a few years, I dusted off my sewing machine and have spent this past year refreshing all those old skills. My current list of notions includes a scalloped blade for my rotary blade and after seeing this post, I would definitely add your 5 in 1 tool! I live in a small house, so multipurpose items are much-welcomed around here! Thank you for your television show, this blog, your books and all the ways you have contributed to my creativity!
    Warm regards,
    Ruth Lutz

    January 10, 2015

I already have this tool & use it all the time. If I were to win it, I would give it as a gift to a fellow quilter. I have the “True Cut Circle Cutter” on my wish list. I use the Olfa Circle Rotary Cutter to make hats from you “Creative Kindness” instructions but this new circle cutter will enable me to cut even larger circles.

    January 10, 2015

Some tools just makes sewing doll clothes easier, the small seams, hems and being able to mark the round little overlays, can’t think of better tool than the 5 in 1. I did have it on my Santa list, but I guess he ran out, so its definitely still on the top of my list. I’m still using the old bent one with the slider missing out of grandma’s sewing basket, not that I’m complaining mind you.

  • ZOHRA ARASTU
    January 10, 2015

I love your blog Nancy. I have seen you use this tool on the show sometimes but now that I know all the wonderful functions it performs it is top of my wish list. I could get really creative with this tool.

    January 10, 2015

Besides the Clover 5 in 1 tool I wish for a large pair of “mosquito” type double curve embroidery scissors. I think they would be particularly useful for trimming jump stitches under the embroidery foot while sewing as well as cutting underneath the hoop when I get the occasional “bird’s nest”.

  • Kathy l
    January 10, 2015

I love this tool, it appears to be better at hems than my old fashion hem gauge, and better than my high school compass to draw circles (that I continue to loose the pencil from).

  • Barbara
    January 10, 2015

Thanks for coming up with smart tools to make our sewing easier to enjoy. The 5 in 1 tool is definitely on my list to get. I have started making doll clothes, with the small seams, hems and round overlays on the skirts the 5 in 1 would be a great asset, I’m also looking for chalk markers you use, I have the pieces of broken chalk and love how yours mark so smoothly on your show. Tell Mary I’m watching for all the tips on her doll clothes. Thank you Nancy for all the sewing shows you do on PBS. I still receive tv by antenna.

  • Karen
    January 10, 2015

The 5 in 1 gauge sewing notion would be on TOP of my list. I am so intrigued by this little notion each time I see you use it on your TV shows. Ok, so this 5 in 1 tool is definitely on my wish list!! Definitely going to look for it at Sewing & Stitchery Expo next month. And, I’m going to suggest it to my 4-H kids. Much better than a classic sewing gauge.

  • Brenda Howard
    January 10, 2015

I like this tool and I have been waiting for a 50% off coupon at Joannes to get it. I just took a class today and learned several new uses for the purple thang that I wasn’t aware of. Although it is low cost it just seemed to not be very useful until today. Now it is on my list of things to buy too. LOL

  • Audrey Milot
    January 10, 2015

I had a tool similar to the 5-1 but it broke and I never replaced it because I didn’t sew much anymore. But with the added feature of the compass and the lock in place I will order this from your catalogue. Thanks for explaining how many ways it will help. I have started quilting and my one granddaughter has just received her first American Girl Doll which I will be making outfits for and for my granddaughter to match. Sewing will be a lot of fun again.

    Hi Nancy,
Really I am just writing to say hello. I feel like I am talking to an old and dear friend. I have watched you on tv and recorded your programs. I think I have everything I need to begin sewing and quilting except the courage. That is why I enjoy watching you as much as I do. You have so much knowledge about sewing and quilting. I would like to be able to become a seamstress and quiltmaker now that I have the time. I just don’t know where to begin. I do have a dress that I would like to copy and make a new pattern from however I’m still not certain where to begin. I have gotten many very good ideas from you Nancy not to mention what I have learned from you and your programs. So I guess I’m writing to thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent with all of us. You are very appreciated. Thank you and God bless you. Teresa H. [email protected]

When I started quilting the gage was ordered. This lesson on how to use it has been great. Thank you. Learning about the uses is such a big help as I lost the packaging. Nice of the company to offer it as a wining gift. I add that your show on PBS to my must see Saturday morning. Besides learning from the features, I also enjoy meeting the people that have sewing projects that give to others. While in WI for 4months this past summer, watching grand children, I was able to see your show two to three times a week. The kids knew it was G-mas TV time. Thanks again Beth

The next notion that I would love to own is the protractor/wheel for proper placement of machine embroidery designs that the guest on your recent show about Crazy Quilting used. I don’t even know the name of it to try to find it!

At the top of my list are the “Clover Wave Rotary Blade”, the “Clover Pinking Rotary Blade” and the “Point Former and Tube Turner”. I have had the Clover 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge for a few years now and use it extensively.

  • Sue Proffitt
    January 10, 2015

Thank you for the explanation of the 5 -in-1 tool. It also looks sturdier than my old gauge. Right now my first wish is for the Steady Betty for the foot pedal for my sewing machine as we recently removed the old carpet and put down a laminate flooring.

I’d love to win this interesting tool with so many different uses. What a great tool to have in my sewing “toolbox.”

5-in-1 sliding gauge, Point Former and Tube Turner, and new Olfa cutting mats ( mine are over 10 years old). I greatly appreciate you taking the time to explain your favorite used for the 5-in-1 gauge. I have always found you to be a wealth of information. Thank you so much for all that I and many others have learned from you.

    January 11, 2015

I would love this tool because the “curser” on my old gauge doesn’t stay put. It is amazing that every single width of all areas of this tool can be used in one way or another. I also have nothing currently to draw circles. Having the button to press to lock it in place would be great. I also would love magic clips and a 60 degree angle template or ruler. I was just on Nancysnotions.com yesterday to review my wish list. The 5-in-1 will now be added to my list!

  • Miriam

    January 11, 2015

I had not seen this tool before reading your post; it looks pretty awesome. I’m always looking for something to make circles (a little more perfect than I can freehand them, or spending time going through the house finding the perfect size glass, etc.). When I saw this feature, I’m in! The next tool for my sewing area, I hope.

  • Shawn Marie
    January 11, 2015

    January 11, 2015

I’m still using my original metal seam gauge I got when I first started sewing. This 5 in 1 tool has many new advantages. I like that the gauge kicks and the different parts of the gauge can be used to measure. The circle guide is really cool!

    January 11, 2015

The hem gauge has always been my favorite tool in the sewing room but this one beats all !!!!! I have always wanted something to make circles without having to go through the cupboards with a ruler to find the correct circle size. This handy tool has so many great useful items all in one. Can’t wait to get one. Thank You.

  • Sherry Bartlett
    January 11, 2015

I’d love to have the 5-in-1 tool. I just made some curtains, and my old metal gauge was difficult to keep on the right setting. I’d love to have this one that locks in place, and that does so many other things, especially the circle/scallop feature!

I am a notions junkie. My philosophy is that you never know which notion will be the perfect one for a particular job so having a variety of tools available might make the difference between a smooth and easy process or a messy, time consuming job. I would love to have the 5-in-one gauge. It looks like it will be very useful for all kinds of measuring jobs.

  • Erin M

My wish list is so big I’ll have to take it one at a time, but that 5 in 1 is the best looking thing sine the little one I had in high school in 1952-54. I think I’ve gotten my use out of it. I recently volunteered to help alter show choir outfits for my granddaughter’s choir, did 25 pairs of pants and 10 jackets. It was so fun.
