Sew Simple with Rectangles and Squares by Nancy Zieman

From gift giving to personal sewing, Nancy Zieman found many projects could be stitched from the simplest shapes. We’ve already shared the first episode of the three-part series, Sew Simple with Rectangles & Squares, on Sewing With Nancy. This blog focuses on part two of the series, sharing useful, yet clever items such as: Hold-it Sacks, Mini Fabric Sacks, Fabric Bins, and Wall Pockets. With 12 complete projects in all, you won’t want to miss this collection. Sew Simple with Rectangles and Squares, a new 3-part Sewing With Nancy series

Hold-it Sacks

The Hold-it Sacks were Nancy’s first sew-simple projects in this episode. Prop up your cell phone or electronic tablet in the cradle area of a Hold-it Sack. Made from laminated fabric, they’re ideal to use throughout your home or office. The unique finished shapes appear as if they were made from complicated patterns, but not these gadget holders. They’re all made from rectangular shapes.

Mini Fabric Sacks

Toss them in a game or use them to hold down pattern pieces, these Mini Fabric Sacks can be both fun and functional. You can easily make three mini sacks in an hour or less.

Fabric Bins

Don’t settle for tan or black bins for your shelf, customize fabric bins to accent your home décor by selecting coordinating fabrics. Make from, you guessed it, rectangle and square fabric pieces. The sewing is enjoyable and the end result is as fresh in appearance as it is useful. Grommets serve as both handles and a focal point.

Wall Pockets

What’s good for the shelf is good for the wall! With a little tweaking of the instructions, fabric bins turn into wall pockets that provide organization and style to any home or work office.

I love all of the gadget holders, especially the one of the IPAD. Nancy always made her usable projects so easy to make and follow.

I’ve been wanting to make the holdit sacks for my phone. My Kindle has a case the props it up but I think I’d actually use the large hold it sack because it’s more sturdy. Thanks….

My favorite project is the fabric bin. I can’t think of one part of my house that couldn’t use one or two of these. They are pretty and useful.

I am excited to see this. I have been wanting a tablet stand to hold my reading device on my lap. So my plan is to now make me one and probably one for each of my girls. Thank you for all the wonderful ideas and perfect timing of this particular project.

The tablet stand and phone stand would be the first thing I would make, but can think of a lot of things to use the bins for.

When I’ve needed pattern weights in the past, I’ve often gone to my pantry and taken out canned goods. I really like the idea of the fabric pattern weights and that would be something that I would get busy making.

All are great ideas. I love the fabric pattern weights and would probably make those first, but the wall pockets look interesting too.

I would love to make a few colorful bins for my sewing room. I could organize my patterns and get them out of the drawer they are in where they get dog eared. I might make some weights to hold patterns down, too. I have always just used pins but maybe I’ll give it a try.

I would first make the fabric bins. I am having a new sink cabinet installed and would like to use the bins to organize and corral the little bits I will store underneath the sink.

I would first like to make the skinny wall bins to hold mail on a wall in the kitchen. With four of them, I could actually organize that part of the kitchen…..finally! Then I could start with larger ones for the sewing room! Oh what fun I’ll have.

I love the fabric bins. What a great way to use up leftover fabric. You can even make organizing easier by matching the fabric to the contents. Or embroidering the label on the fabric.
