FirstCollage NancyZieman DoodleStitch 1Create small works of fiber art! We’ve all doodled, sketching with short pencil strokes or shapes in the margins of notes or homework. In part one of the Sewing With Nancy program, Doodle Stitching, you’ll learn to translate those sketched doodles onto fabric with sewing machine stitches. The sewing is fast, and the end result very gratifying.

Zigzag Doodles

In Doodle Stitching Part One, Nancy begins by doodling with a zigzag stitch. Queen Ann’s Lace flowers can easily be sketched with a condensed zigzag stitch and a little sewing savvy. You’ll be impressed how using what’s commonly known as a bartack stitch can turn into an artistic design.

Sketch ‘n Stitch

Odds and ends of silk cut into squares and stitched to a fabric showcase is the next doodle project in Doodle Stitching Part One. Learn to use a single motif of a decorative stitch that’s already programmed into your sewing machine as part of the doodling process. Like the pencil and paper sketching, each Sketch ‘n Stitch project is its own, unique work of art.

Doodle Stitching Part One by Nancy Zieman

Playful Decorative Stitching

Odds are, most of us who sew or quilt rarely use the decorative stitches built in or programmed into our machines. These artistic stitches are just waiting to be tested and featured in an upcoming project. Nonchalantly testing out a variety of stitches on fabric without care of direction is our next doodle stitching experiment. Not only can you create an interesting art piece, you’ll see what magical stitches your machine has in store for you.

I’m planning a 16-section art quilt, inspired by Clemetine shop in Rockland, ME. I would love to learn doodle stitching techniques–they would contrast nicely with sashiko hand stitching and other surface embellishments. Thanks for the opportunity!

I doodle most when talking with friends over the phone. Love the decorative stitches pillow. My goodness!!!! I could have had several of those from testing out my machine stitches. Just didn’t realize it!!!!! Thanks.

For years I have been wanting to really develop skills in thread painting and designing using the built in stitches on my machine. This book is exactly what I need. I would love to win it. Thank you for tjat opportunity.

I have a couple of sketch books I use when I have this big idea for a quilt. I love drawing out what I think of and hoping I can put it in fabric.

I would doodle sketch when flowers are blooming in my little prairie in front of the house. They are so diverse in shape and color but so short lived. I would love to sketch them, then capture them in colored fabric & thread so I could see them year round in my sewing room!

Practising free motion quilting is often tedious – not wanting to use a quilt yet not wanting to use up scraps (non productive). Combining FMQ with doodle stitching allows me to practise control while allowing for wonky stitching.

I would doodle stitch the beauty found in the natural things around my yard, pine cones, trillium, lily pads, etc. What fun!

I haven’t done much with the decorative stitches on my machine. The pillow is a good idea. Also interested in thread painting. So far my attempts at free motion have not gone well. I have an older machine.

I like to doodle in a sketch book first thing in the morning. i do have a small book in my purse to use if I have an idea “when I’m out”. This sounds like an excellent book full of wonderful ideas.

I doodle whenever I need to think, or when I have time on my hands.

Have any other winners received their prizes? I never have. When I inquired, I got this reply. I still haven’t received my templates and I have not gotten a reply to my second inquiry about when the templates will arrive.

    “May 23, 2018
    Congratulations!

Thank you for following and commenting on the Nancy Zieman Productions, LLC blog. You are the randomly selected winner of “Nancy’s Grandmother’s One Patch Template Collection”.

Your comment is, I would love to win the template package. I have been wanting to make a hexagon quilt but have been worried about sewing all the angles. The mod hex would be so much simpler. I need to explore mod prints and colors for the challenge since it is outside my comfort zone. I usually stick to more traditional. This will be a fun new challenge.

The giveaway is on its way.”

Most of us don’t realize what a great springboard doodling can be for amazing artistic creations. If we cast a discerning eye on what we have subconsciously doodled, we may find a potential “pattern in the making” and the inspiration to get started on it.

In response to Kathryn Englebretsen, I too have been told I won a giveaway and have not received anything. I was supposed to have won “Machine Embroidery in Six Easy Lessons” by Eileen Roche, because my comment had been randomly selected. This was on May 3, 2018, so far I have not received a personal email confirmation or the item. After a few phone calls I did get an email that someone was going to check on that for me, but so far, nothing. My story isn’t done yet….my daughter was just randomly selected to win the Free Motion Framework book from the June 5 post. So far she has not received any personal confirmation email either, or any item in the mail. In the past, I did win something, and I received a personal email telling me I won , I believe before it was even announced in the next posting. So, I think there is some problem going on here.

My granddaughter is 6 and designing with fabrics (mostly garments) that she has. When I watched the video, I immediately thought that she would enjoy doodling with the sewing machine to create embellishments for her creations while learning with creating small pieces of art. I would enjoy being able to guide her with these techniques. What a wonderful opportunity, thank you!

I doodle in the morning as I enjoy my cocoa . I enjoy doodling the most when I spend time with my BEST BEST friend (she’s 85years young). She has so much creative ideas coming out of her . We then play with our sewing/ embroidery machines . But we also enjoy pulling out our Embellishing machines . We love creating our own fabric . We draw out or sew a sample swatch of our doodles . We always have so many ideas .

My last doodling project was making a wallhanging of my cousin’s flower garden. It turned out pretty well but I’d like to have more ideas for my next project! I get artist’s block sometimes and a new book would be nice to pull me out of it. Thank you for your shows. They are inspiring!!

I like to sketch moments when they happen..I like to capture the 1st thing that catches my eye. Then build around that. I’ve always wanted to do it with a sewing machine. I’ve crafted since I was around 9 years old. Starting with embroidery then taught myself sewing, then on to crocheting and knitting. But I’ve just always sketched. Very satisfying to my heart. Would very much like to win Nancy’s book..Thank you and God Bless you Deborah Cox

I doodled with thread when I got my new sewing machine, on muslin scraps, just to see “what she could do.” I never did anything frame-worthy, although I saved the stitches I produced for inspiration, and to build upon. This book seems to have the next steps I’m looking for to help me complete projects I can be proud of! (Also, Queen Anne’s Lace is one of the “weeds” I allow to grow in my garden for it’s beauty.) Thanks for the chance to win one of Nancy’s gifts. I wish I could’ve met her.

Doodling happens all the time for me. Especially waiting on the phone. My favorite doodle seems to be figure 8s transitioning in size. I think these could be transformed into Christmas ornaments for my family. What fun that could be, maybe stiffened cubes or pinned onto foam balls.
