Sew Tshirts NancyZiemanOne of the greatest benefits of my job has been one-on-one lessons from sewing, embroidery, and quilting experts. When preparing for a TV series, my guests and I plan the series months in advance. After a quick study of the technique, book, or pattern, we have several phone conferences, I prepare scripts, the guest and my staff make step-by-step samples, and the day before recording the Sewing With Nancy episodes, we fine-tune the show.

When working with Pamela Leggett, whose patterns focus on knit and fit, I thought Id learn a couple tips, but I was wrong, I learned many tips!

Sew the Perfect Knit Top or T-Shirt

This tip works ideally with Pamela’s, The Perfect T-Shirt Pattern.

Sew the Perfect T-Shirt/Sewing with Nancy/Nancy Zieman/Pamela Leggett

1. Test the fabric for retention, not just stretch. Most T-shirt patterns require at least 25% crosswise stretch. That’s easy. But does the fabric retract without coaxing? Quality is important!

2. Choose the pattern for T-shirts by measuring high bustline. Choose the size by that measurement. Then, measure full bustline. If the difference is 3″ or greater, choose a T-shirt pattern with a dart.

Note from Nancy Logo Armholes on fitted knit tops are usually low. Using this technique, I’m pleased with the fit of the shirt in the upper body.

3. Fit while you sew. Yes, we know that, but Pamela guides us through the exact process.

FittingTheShirtNancyZieman

Note from Nancy Logo I admit, I like to skips steps, but following the process was totally worthwhile.

4. Stabilize the front shoulder seam with a woven, fusible stay tape. You’re going to like this idea!

5. Stabilize neckline of front and back with knit, fusible stay tape.

stabilizers for sewing shirts

Note from Nancy LogoI usually cut knit interfacing strips from fusible knit interfacing. But, using the woven and knit stay tapes, as used in the industry, really saves time!

6. Use a stretch needle as opposed to a ball point needle. The stretch needle has a more defined point.

7. Do not use a stretch stitch, you know, the ones with lots of stitches. Less is best. Serge the seams or use a wobble stitch, .5 width x 2.5 length.

8. During the sewing/fitting process, make changes to the fabric and pattern at the same time. You’ll learn how while watching the first episode of Sew the Perfect T-Shirt.

Ten Tips I Learned About Sewing the Perfect T-Shirt | Nancy Zieman | Sewing With Nancy

9. Stitch the dart, try on the knit shirt, then, check the fit. If the dart position is too high or low, you’ll learn how to change the pattern and the knit fabric at once. Knits are forgiving, and changes are easy to make.

10. After making one style, don’t stop there—this pattern has three neckline options: jewel, V-neck, and scooped. The second shirt will go together effortlessly.

I have difficulty finding clothes that fit me well because I have a small back, very large chest, very long arms and torso. Hip,hip, hooray!! I’ve tried to make several T shirts lately and ended up throwing them away because the fit was so awful — too short, too wide, neckline way off, shoulder seams halfway down my bicep — I couldn’t even keep them for pajama tops! Thanks to you both 🙂

Now that I’m only working 2 days, I’d livoe to learn to make my own tee shirts. If Nancy learned much more than she expected from Pamela, where better to learn from than Pamela. I can’t wait to begin creating; it’s been too long just using my sewing machine for repairs. With love & thanks to you, Nancy!

I would love to have a T-shirt pattern that I knew would fit and be flattering. I like the idea of getting to choose 3 necklines, too. That would allow for being able to choose a neckline that would allow you to coordinate a piece of jewelry that you already own that matches the fabric you choose.

I am not pleased with the fit of store bought T-shirts, too small in the bust and to wide in the shoulders.

I love wearing knits for their comfort. I’m so disappointed with purchased shirts, that I pay a lot for, and then they sag and stretch out with use. I’d love to be able to make the perfect T-shirt. Thanks Nancy for this chance to win the pattern.

I like to wear knits which with a major percentage of natural fibers, which can be difficult to find in stores. Unfortunately, shopping on-line is a concern because one never knows what to expect in terms of color and fabric weight.

Today, my dear friend and co-worker passed away.how many we always joke about how many different Babylock machines I have! one for quilting, one to embroider and the a serger and coverstitch machine are the latest. I kept telling her that I was going to learn to sew my own clothes!
Each day she’d say, “Well, did you make a top yet!” “I’m still working on it!” to be honest I’m afraid of armholes with the serger! im made tops with my sewing machine, but why do I fear the serger? When she found out about the cancer, I was going to make her a robe. The cancer took her too soon! just 4 weeks! Now, I’m going to make a top and think of her with every stitch. I just need the right pattern.

My favorite tee shirt? I have used my best fitting tee as a pattern and lengthened it to dress length, finding many ways and occasions to wear it. I plan to use the tape stabilizer with my next one and thank you, Nancy, for the tip.

I started sewing garments when I was a kid and then moved toward craft sewing and most recently quilting. But the itch to return to garments has been too hard to resist scratching so I’ve been refreshing those skills and gearing back up to make some fabulous clothing! But I haven’t found the right tshirt pattern, which is funny since more than 50% of my tops are commercial tees. I’m tall, long armed, big busted, and broad backed which means nothing fits quite right. This pattern looks perfect for me! Best wishes to Nancy, thanks for years of learning.

Being a middle aged woman only 5′ tall makes it difficult to find off the rack t-shirt that fit appropriately. They are either too boxy or to fitted and short. Making my own with your process would really benefit me. Thanks for the many wonderful tips!

Sewing T-shirts has always been a challenge for me. Choosing the right fabric is my first challenge, if the neck isn’t wonky , then the hem doesn’t look right. Hopefully, if I follow your guidance, I can achieve a good look. Thank you so much for teaching us how to become better sewers, quilters and people.

    September 27, 2017

I LOVE working with knits and challenging fabrics! Sewing since age 3, i never knew there were “troublesome” fabrics so i was positively fearless in fabric selection. By 11 i was fitting & altering formal dresses and suits.

Now that i am older, wiser and a little more gray, i would love to have the “right ” pattern so i dont have to spend hours redrafting patterns that just arent right to start with…
and since i sew for some very elderly ladies, i would love a good pattern to make tops that fit their stooped and aging bodies (ready to wear makes them look like they are drowning in the front and exposing their rounded backs and humps.

I have always loved sewing tops with cotton knits, and even more so now that I’m older and can’t wear polyester because it doesn’t breathe and I get way too hot in it. Knits are so easy to sew, I don’t know why so many people are afraid to try them out. Pamela is a girl after my own heart, as I, too, am a Palmer/Pletsch instructor. She has taken her training to a whole new level. Thank you, Nancy, for all you have done for home-sewing and those who want to make a business out of their sewing skills. I’m so glad I have years of you on video tape! Thanks, also, for the opportunity to win Pamela’s Tshirt pattern.

Since I retired my body shape has changed. I guess you could say I’ve turned into a pear.

@Tucker I too have this super mite from an apartment complex I rented. I have been using a combination of almond oil, tea tree and black walnut tincture on my skin and after 1 week the bites are down by 90. Now it is matter of getting them out of my car, work and home. All I I can do is continue the bug spray, wash clothes in hot. I think if they no longer can lay eggs which seem to be in the skin…not sure then you can get a handle on it. I have had great relief from the tincture on my skin. I spray my clothes and furniture with rubbing alcohol. Personally I think government authorities are aware of this super bug and keeping it quiet. I used to work for a government agency for drinking water dept and reports would come through that was not meant for the public. sad really.

I love t-shirts! I’m often disappointed that there is so much inconsistency in fit even among shirts from the same brand. I have tossed around the notion of making my own. This pattern is just what I need and there are several variations. Already picking out fabric in my head! Thank you for the inspiration and motivation.
