Fabric Wraps You’ll Love to Sew and Wear

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

With a yard or two of fabric and a few sewing steps, you can easily sew more than 14 clever wraps. Designer and author  Mary Mulari takes a practical, yet stylish approach to sewing wraps. This week on Sewing With Nancy online you’ll learn how to sew wraps that provide a laid-back look, wraps that are perfect for formal dress, or wraps that simply keep your shoulders warm. Here’s a preview of the first episode of All Occasion Fabric Wraps.

Rita’s Wrap

With a rectangle of fabric you can create fashionable yet functional wraps. The first option begins with a simple-shaped wrap that can be paired with jeans or a little black dress, depending upon the fabric. Named the Rita wrap, this casual version is made with soft plush fabric that won’t slip from your shoulders.

Go-Two Wrap

Cleverly designed armhole openings give this wrap two wearing options. The first option sports a small drapable collar with a longer, graceful length.

Twist Wrap

Transform a long, flat rectangle of fabric into a wrap that cascades around your shoulders and gracefully twists at the center. Use knits or woven fabrics, it doesn’t matter at all!

All Occasion Fabric Wraps by Mary Mulari as seen on Sewing With Nancy ZiemanIf the fabric has a distinctive right and wrong side, create a double twist. You get to decide!

Side note: I made this wrap to wear for a wedding, using a sequined knit fabric. I didn’t finish the edges since the fabric doesn’t ravel. The sewing and cutting time was 20 minutes!

All-Weather Wrap

On a cool or partly cloudy day, wear this wrap as another layer of comfort. When it rains, put up the hood.

For a day at the beach, the wrap adapted from a beach towel becomes a bathing suit cover up. How’s that for versatility! All Occasion Fabric Wraps by Mary Mulari as seen on Sewing With Nancy Zieman

Off-Center Wrap

Start with a pashmina shawl, a rectangle of microfiber plush, or luxurious silk, and in minutes you’ll be wearing an off-center wrap. Bobbie Jo is showcasing an ombré silk that is shaped with a single seam that has an added drawcord.

One Seam Ruffle Shawl

Stretch fabrics with continuous rows of ruffles are the perfect choice for this next One Seam Ruffle Shawl. The texture of the fabric gives the focal point, while you just cut out the patterns and stitch the single seam.

Mary M has always been a favorite designer. I started with her sweatshirt upgrades years ago. Moved onto aprons. and am very much liking her move into wraps. My favorite in those shown is the off-center wrap. Thanks to you Nancy for introducing me to Mary years ago at one of your spring sewing events in Beaver Dam.

These are all great ideas – Mary Mulari is so creative. I like the idea of the Beach Towel wrap – and even have the perfect towel ready to go. That justifies going shopping for something new, while putting a perfectly great towel to good use! I’m going to experiment with making some for the little ones in my life too.

    November 6, 2014

Oh the places these would go to. My daughter needs them now and when the baby is born- what a great collection of nursing mom covers. Next I see them across the shoulders of older folks within nursing homes who just need a little hug. Last would be other family members (hint they live up North) and friends and even one or two for little old me. I do see an outbreak of pockets on a few no need for a purse now lets get walking and sewing that right get rid of the stash of fine fabrics too.

The Twist-Wrap, for sure. I think some of these would benefit from more fabric…they look a bit skimpy. Add a little more length/width and they would seem so much more expensive and couture.

I especially like the Twisty Wrap! I really enjoy creating my own marbled fabric, so this would be a great way to showcase those brilliant colors! I also have several knitting machines, and all I have to do is knit plain yardage–no binding off, no shaping! For that reason, the Twisty Wrap would be a fantastic choice for someone who is jus learning how to use a knitting machine. You couldn’t ask for an easier project!

Now choosing a wrap I think my first attempt would be to use up my stash of ruffle fabric and what a great idea but honestly I am going to attempt each one. I also have to say “Hats Off” to your viewers for enriching the content with all their great ideas and suggestions. As always much gratitude Nancy for sharing your time and talents.
    Cheers,

I could not decide between the Twist Wrap and the All Weather Wrap, so I would just make them both.

I couldn’t decide between the Twist Wrap and the All-Weather Wrap. I’d like to have both of them.

I love to wear wraps of all kinds. I have always had this thing about a coat making me feel confined, so I turned to wraps. Can’t wait to get the pattern and start sewing.

I have to say, hands down, my favorite is the one seamed ruffle shawl! The fabric is beautiful and can cover up a lot of small mistakes. I’m so glad I found you website, I’m finally back to sewing after about a 15yr hiatus. I’m loving every minute of it too!

An interesting variety of wraps. I like the Aurora Wrap. Both versions are great. Like the cuff/sleeve version.

Mary is SO creative and her projects are always fun to do! My favorite is the twist wrap. It can be made elegant or functionally warm. Any of these wraps can be embellished with embroidery, pockets added for convenience. They would be a great gift for a baby shower or a new mom as a nursing cover; added warmth for a senior citizen; a great wrap for a chilly movie theater; birthday and Christmas gifts. My daughter’s office is cold so I’m definitely making one for her! Thanks, Mary and Nancy!

I love all the wraps, casual, sporty and elegant. My favorite would be the 2 scarves waiting for my purchase and create endless possibilities. Great ideas for Christmas, birthdays and just because your special. Thank you for keeping me in the loop.

Having to make a choice, it would be the Twist Wrap. Have a fabric in my stash that will be perfect for the upcoming holidays. Have been saving for ‘just the right design’ and now I have found it. Thanks Mary and Nancy.

I think all the wraps are so clever, and I really like the All Weather cover-up, but my favorite is the Twist wrap. I can ‘see’ it in so many different fabrics for so many different occasions. Thank you Mary and Nancy!

My favorite wrap is the Go-Two Wrap. This wrap would make a wonderful gift for any occasion but especially at Christmas.

I watched the video and was excited to try Rita’s Wrap because of its shape and simplicity. Thankfully, I made a muslin first. No measurements are given for the neckline cutout, so I improvised. Regardless of the shape of the neck, this wrap does not fit in any way. I am 5′ 9″ and wear a size 16. I suspect that the measurements in the video are for a size small. It felt very awkward and the fabric bunched up at the neck. I’m not sure know how to alter it to fit my shoulders properly. Unfortunately, this wrap is a no go for me.

Wish you would include directions on how to make the twist wrap, how much material to buy, etc.
