Sew kids' fleece hats and scarves/Cuddle Buddies/Sewing With Nancy ZiemanMost of us look forward to easy, yet artistic sewing projects. Throw in the fact that these projects are also adorable and I know you’ll be adding today’s topic to your sewing to-do list. Have I piqued your interest? My goal is that you’ll be inspired to create hat and scarf creations for kids, called Cuddle Buddies Hats and Scarves designed by Sewing With Nancy team member, Donna Fenske.

Basic Construction

Patterns in this collection are based on a simple hat and scarf shape. The magic happens when the included appliqué pattern pieces are added to transform the animal characters. Once you’ve mastered the hat and scarf construction, there’s no limit to the possibilities.

Learn Basic Appliqué Instructions

Lions and tigers and giraffes, oh my! Appliqués will make your sewing project take on character. Even if you’ve never attempted appliqués before, you’ll have immediate sewing success after following our sewing tips. Plus, sewing on fleece is very forgiving—my kind of fabric. The hats and scarves require a yard of fabric or less. Perhaps you can use some of your leftover fleece scraps for the appliqués.

Sew kids' fleece hats and scarves/Cuddle Buddies/Sewing With Nancy ZiemanThe appliqué pieces and pattern pieces for the hats and scarves are included in the book. You’ll find that with a few tweaks, the hat design can easily change from a giraffe to a lion. Sew kids' fleece hats and scarves/Cuddle Buddies/Sewing With Nancy Zieman

The Sewing With Nancy crew—most of them kids at heart—thought the scarves and hats were made for them. Gregg Happ, our floor director, decided that the giraffe was his buddy.

My friends and I sewed over a hundred fleece hats using the technique of the Hat Lady you recently featured. Yesterfay we delivered 60 to Mobile Hope Loudoun, an organization that helps homeless children in Loudoun County, Virginia. If I won the Cuddle Buddy book, Our group would use it to make Cuddle Buddies for next winter. They are just adorable and would make every child feel special.

My son received a Project Linus blanket when he had his appendix out and treasures it — it would be neat to make something fun for other kids to help them. • Jan Watson
    February 4, 2016

These are all cute. Save the scraps and give them to someone who makes “the hat ladies” hats for children. Scraps 4″ cross wise X 7″ length will make one gore for a hat. I take scraps and buy plain fleece for the band. I recently cut out 25 hats from scraps from salvages when someone made was making fleece blankets.

  • Jan Neff
    February 4, 2016

My kids and grandkids are all too old for these but I’d love to make them anyway. Great projects for Gingerbread Markets and Christmas giving. Also for homeless shelters. My favorite is the shark.

  • Darlene H-C
    February 4, 2016

My daughters are now 26 years old, but one of my twin girls loved giraffes growing up. The giraffe set reminds me of that. When we went to the zoo, she was hoping to ride a giraffe. Of course their necks are too fragile so she had to settle for riding an elephant. So, I really like the giraffe set because of my warm memories.

I am partial to the dinosaur but they would all be wonderful for the children going through cancer treatment at Arkansas Childrens Hospital. They would keep their heads and hands warm while they were being treated and hopefully they would bring smiles to their faces.

Sorry Nancy, I can’t choose just one. I have a goal for 2016 and that’s to not let my second mastectomy rule my life. I have a rare breast cancer and don’t know what’s next so I want to sew, sew, sew. I want to leave something behind for everyone I love that I made especially for them. The hats would be perfect for the children and one adult (he would wear it to bed!) in my life.

    February 5, 2016

My grandson Cooper is 10 & Ryen is 5 and they both love sharks. Cooper has books about sharks & has learned to recognize all of them. So that is why I would choose the shark. Also, our church ladies would like to make any of them for the school children who haven’t hats to wear this winter since we live in Michigan.

What cute and adorable critters! As soon as I saw them my thoughts turned to making them of felt to be used at my daughter’s child care classroom. (4 year olds who love to dress up). I plan to leave off the ties off the hats, and only make the mitten part of the scarves. I was too impatient to wait so I already ordered the book! (Would share with a friend if I won another.) Thanks for filling so many needs!

Our church has a Christmas play each year and the under age 6 group wears animal costumes. These hats would be perfect for them. PS I am the costume director! Such fun to work with the children!

Just watched the video & they are so cute. Where do you purchase the double-sided sticky stabilizer? I looked in the NN store & couldn’t find anything like it. What is the name of a brand as most stabilizers I Googled were sticky on 1 side & iron-on fusible on the other. Thanks
