Interview with Joi Mahon

Nancy: Please, share a sneak peek into your background with us .

Joi: Like many, I started sewing at a young age. I have always loved sewing, drawing garments on paper dolls, and making hand sewn doll clothing when I was just 5 years old. I took my one and only How to use a Commercial Pattern Sewing Class in 6th grade, when I was in 4-H. Sewing just clicked with me! At 14, I started apprenticing for a tailor and learned how to fit every body—men, women, kids, big, small, young and older. This is the foundation for what I do today. I also learned relationship skills, how to run a business, and how to be professional. In college, I studied fashion design, which filled in the gaps to become a designer. After graduation, I started my own business.

Nancy: What’s your elevator speech regarding your occupation?
Joi: I am a fashion design entrepreneur, pattern designer for McCall’s, author of fitting books, designer of custom garments, embroidery designer, teacher of methods classes, and a spokesperson/designer for Baby Lock. It’s a rewarding career!
Joi Mahon
Nancy: What’s the most unique design that you’ve created?
Joi: I once designed a line of hunting apparel, and I did all the technical specs!

Nancy: Why did you decide to write Create the Perfect Fit?
Joi: Writing Create the Perfect Fit was the logical progression of my career and skills. This book allows me to share my content with more people. I can’t attend every event; so this allows me to get my knowledge and methods out to the masses.

Nancy: What need does Create the Perfect Fit fill?
Joi: If I had time I would go back to college and write a thesis on why current fit methods are not relevant. Today we have different sewing mindsets, different figure types, different issues, and different body dynamics compared to the standard fitting adjustments. Better nutrition, sports, exercise, medication, sugary diets, hormones in food, and fast food have changed the body dynamics. As a designer I am aware of evaluating these aspects and the effects on body variations. If you address the body first, the fit issues go away before you even sew.

Nancy: What’s your biggest challenge in your career?
Joi: Think of an Incredible Hulk who sews!  My brain works ahead with weird, creative energy. Some of my ideas are crazy, and some are realistic. At any one time I can literally see different designs floating around in my mind. So I reach out and grab one, which becomes my next project. Controlling, yet taking advantage of my creative thinking is my challenge.

Nancy: If you were not a designer/educator in the sewing industry, what would be your other dream job?
Joi: I would be a musician! I play instruments and love to sing.

Fitting has always given me “fits”! I like that this challenges the old ways in lieu of better and newer ones.

Still need help with fitting. If Nancy Zieman recommends this product, then I’m interested. Thanks for the offer!

Have been sewing for many years, starting in 4H. I was a sewing leader in 4H for a few years, but was never confident in fitting and felt there was someone more qualified for teaching. I still sew doll clothes and craft projects, but don’t sew clothing because of fitting so I would love a copy of “Create the Perfect Fit”. Looking forward to following her blog.

I haven’t sewn for myself in about 25 years because I never can get the patterns to fit me properly (no matter how I adjust them). Because of that, I don’t own a dress or a skirt. I really need to have something that shows me how to fit a pattern to my body.

How much fabric I have wasted on garments that didn’t fit well!!! This is a skill I would love to learn.

I’ve been trying to find someone in my area to teach me the correct way to adjust a pattern. So many are into other aspects of sewing and garment sewing doesn’t seem to be one of them. Guess winning this book would be an alternative to learning more. Hope you will consider me.

From reading your article, this looks like a good book! I’ve never been able to sew clothes that fit. I’d love to learn how to adjust patterns. Joi definitely has a gift and I’m thankful she wrote a book to help the rest of us!

I saw Joi on an episode of Sew It All and I was amazed at how she drafted a quick pattern for a T shirt that really would fit. I know a lot of us feel like this, but I think I have the world’s most difficult body to fit! I would love to have this book because I feel like I’m going to pull my hair out so many times while I’m sewing a garment!

Would love to see your book. I started sewing rags together for rugs at a very young age on a treadle machine. I still love sewing at age 81. Can’t seem to find enough time to make everything I want. But that is a love of all sewing (mending too).

What a help this would be as I try to re-fit fabrics to my short waisted pants and dresses. I’ve struggled with fitting but end up with piled up half finished pieces! As an old school frugal sewer, it’s very painful to see the wasted fabrics and money! Sure hope I can win this one! But a purchase is always in sight, since it would be a priority for me.

I would love to have a copy of this book. I am caring for my mom and she has reached that point in her life where her clothes don’t fit like they used to. She is very discouraged, and altering all the dresses she has made in the past just isn’t working. They would need to be taken apart and totally redone. Not a job I have time to take on right now. How much better it would be to start fresh and know it will fit when finished! Thanks for the opportunity.

I took Joy’s Craftsy class and totally “get” her method of fitting. I had difficulty making FBAs and now those are no longer a problem for me. She does it totally different than everyone else, but for me, it works!! Love her!

I liked the way Joi Mahon says that the greatest challenge she faces is trying to control her creative thinking and taking advantage of it. She put into words what every designer or artist faces – capturing the essence of the design that floats in the mind. Wonderful interview, Nancy

  • Cindy
    October 14, 2014

I have searched every avenue short of design school to learn how to correctly fit a garment (and thereby also design) but have come up empty handed. I have asked a gifted sewing friend for her advice as well and would have been willing to apprentice if I c ould have found someone in the area willing! So, a gift like this could be game changing for or me.

  • Linda Simpson
    October 14, 2014

I attended a 2 day class with Joi Mahon at B Sew-Inn in Tulsa. Part of the class was sleeve fitting and the other part was making a fur purse. I needed more time with Joi regarding the fitting so I would really like to win her book. If I don’t win one I will purchase it. I love to sew and would like to be able to make clothes that fit any body type. I knew how to take measurements and make clothes fit back in the 70’s. Now after a 40 year career in Nursing I need to learn how to fit all over again.

    October 14, 2014

This sounds like a great book. I really want to learn to sew better. The skills I have are so very basic. I took a Craftsy class and couldn’t even follow what the instructor was doing. It’s all over my skill level and leaves me confused. Maybe this book will be just what I need.

  • Sandy Younker-Hellman

    October 14, 2014

The past few years I’ve worked on learning how to better fit my garments and avoid the “wadders” (wad up and throw in the corner). I’m thankful that professionals like Joi share their knowledge and experience with home sexists. I would love to add Joi’s practical knowledge to my sewing repertoire!

Lately it seem that most of the sewing I have been doing is of the craft type. Handbags, aprons, placemats, etc. I have in the past done garment sewing. After not having sewn for myself for years, it is a bit daunting to try to find patterns to accurately fit an aging body! Learning Joi’s methods would certainly be uplifting (no pun intended!) and give me hope and incentive to sew clothing again for myself.

  • Elaine
    October 14, 2014

As you’ve pointed out, bodies are so much different now, and it is even harder to find a pattern that truly fits! I see beautiful designer fashion and know how to make something similar, but if the fit isn’t good, it’s wasted effort for me!

  • Gretchen Harwell
    October 14, 2014

Thanks for this post! I am just getting back into sewing after having my daughter two years ago, and what you say about needing to address the body first hits home. I’m finding that I need to reevaluate how everything fits, not just the obvious parts like the tummy area. Joi’s designs are lovely!

  • Barb H
    October 14, 2014

Thank you Joi!! This book is long overdue. My daughters are over six feet tall. Making garments was challenging. Purchasing garments is also challenging. Manufacturers just don’t get it. Adding length to the bottom of a gown does not make it fit thru the torso.

  • Rosemary
    October 14, 2014

I started sewing in Girl Scouts with a dress-it’s amazing I stuck with it between my immature skills and the fit, I persisted even though the dress was a disaster! While I did make many of my clothes when I way young, I have gotten away from it due to many factors, time being the top on my list. Now that I’m retired and found that the patterns I made before don’t fit the same, I should probably re-learn how to fit using the guidelines in this book as not only have styles changes, by body changes present a new challenge.

    October 14, 2014

I really like the points Joi makes about the body. I think many of us have trouble dealing with the changes to our bodies as we age. It took us a long time to accept our body shape in the first place, and now it is changing even more for the worse!!! God (and Joi) help us sew to fit our bodies as is! We need all the help we can get.

    October 14, 2014

I’m always on the lookout for tips on how to better fit patterns to my non-average body shape. I tend to have a long body and much shorter legs. Dresses are a real challenge, whether bought ready-made or made from a pattern. For one, the waist is always in the wrong place no matter what I do, especially now that I have reached retirement age with its additional body shape challenges. This book would be very much appreciated. Thanks for the opportunity! Love your site.

    October 14, 2014

Very excited to see Joi Mahon’s blog. I too started sewing at a very young age. My greatest challenge was learning textles and how to choose the correct methods to support garmets to achieve the fit and drape. I watch “Stitch to Fit” on PBS that gives me more information and inspiration.
Joi, should exspand her skills to her own program!
    Thank you

When I buy RTW, I have to buy to fit my thighs, then I have to take 4″ in in the waist so the waist doesn’t gape. Unfortunately, the zippers don’t want to let the rest in by the time you take that much out of the waist. Will this book help? Thanks for the consideration.

I am new to Joi, but her book sounds super educational! I love to refashion, and I could certainly use some new techniques to aid in fit! I would love to have this book!

Hopefully following her directions will help me! I quit making clothes for myself because (even with altering patterns as best I could) I don’t get garments that fit well. (I also don’t get a good fit from ready-to-wear but am not as frustrated with purchased roomy knits as I was with wovens that I worked so hard to make but didn’t fit as I envisioned).

I love to sew but gave up sewing clothing for myself many years ago because nothing ever fit properly, no matter how much work I put into it. I think I might be ready to try again after reading Joi’s idea’s and opinions on fit methods.

It’s been 20 years since I made a garment for myself. I just couldn’t get the fit right unless the item was “fit prove”, such as a gathered skirt or a shapeless robe. I tried several times to sew up the perfectly fitted garment. I admit it; I gave up. Lately, I have given hesitant thought to trying again and have put the goal on my bucket list. I’m thinking Joi Mahon’s book would give me the skills and the inspiration to try just one more time.

I have never liked a finished garment I have made for myself . The fit is never right and it takes too long to keep adjusting on myself. The description of this book sounds like a real helping hand so,at the age of 61, I am going to venture forth with Joi’s help

Wow, to say that the old way of fitting doesnt apply to today’s bodies due to health, excercise, nutrition etc is radical! I would love to own this book since most of the books I have on fit were published over 20 years ago.

I can usually fit myself well, but it takes so long to figure it out. I’ve been wanting to learn how to plan the pattern adjustments earlier, so it doesn’t take as long. I’ve only found two pattern making books over the years, one decades old and the other English with metric measurements.

Until Recently – I wasn’t really in pursuit of a perfect fit (I was often just a short version of a Big 4 size). Now, via Pinterest, I am pursuing it like a wolf on prey – I have got my FBA down, and I am learning how to manage a sway back. This book would be perfect for me.

I have been sewing most of my life and didn’t have much trouble with fitting but now it is a major problem due to a necessary stomach surgery. I have lost a lot of weight and
can’t find any patterns that will work. I am a senior citizen
and need a 0 or 1 size but what I find is teens or juniors and
they don’t fit my age style. I hope this book would help. I need it bad.

Hi, I read all your ‘Sewing With Nancy’ in my emails. Funny, but my Mom told me several years ago that she always watched a TV show where this ‘Nancy’ lady did sewing, but I never realized it must be your ‘Sewing With Nancy’ show until just recently. My Mom is a wonderful seamstress, but nothing professional like you. She is 97 now and is not able to sew like she once did, but she has made a lot of wedding dresses, accessories, altered 5 vintage bridesmaids dresses (found in an antique shop) for someone to use in their wedding and did it with only the girls measurements. She made the entire wedding party dresses for my wedding. Unfortunately I did not inherit her talent or creative nature, which makes me sad, because I like to sew. Thanks for your emails Nancy! I cannot watch your shows as I travel too much and my internet is not good enough.

I have take one of Joi’s fit classes on Craftsy. I haven’t sewn in years because nothing ever seems to fit. Her class has given me renewed interest in sewing. I just starting to try altering the patter to fit my size. This book would be a wonderful asset for me. Joi makes it look so simple/ I would really enjoy having a copy of her book.

What Joi has said is true. Patterns today are very different from past years. And if we look at the body first some would NEVER sew one stitch. One of the very reasons I make my own clothes is because if I buy something I have to nearly remake the entire garment. I’m 63 1/2 inches tall and have been since 12yrs old. I have short arms and short legs. I’m med/thick boned and very broad shoulders. Nice shape but very seldom have been able to purchase something ready made that didn’t need altering. I’ve learned to custom make many garments but still have an issue making slacks. Her book should help with that.
It was nice of her to offer her book for a giveaway.

Unbelievable how many comments say the same thing, we can’t fit our own bodies to sewing patterns any more. Yes, I fit perfectly right out of the pattern envelope in the 60’s, could still adapt and fit through the 80’s, but for the last 25 or so years have wadded way more than I’ve worn. I ‘understand’ fit issues, can fit for others, alter much of my ready to wear, but sewing for myself from scratch? So frustrating. There’s a healthy franchise market here waiting to be tapped.

I’ve been sewing for over 55 years and still have trouble fitting patterns. At my age I’m not able to find much in ready to wear so I’ve returned to garment sewing for myself.
Nancy, I’ve recently found your blog, but you were my go to girl back in the 1980s when I was sewing for my family. I’ve learned so much from you over the years. I’m glad to be back in touch with your sewing world!

I’m still struggling with fitting issues. I understand the concepts at a higher level, but continue to struggle to actually apply them & translate 3 dimensional adjustments to a 2 dimensional pattern piece. I’ve signed up for Joy’s Craftsy class, but haven’t had a chance to really sit down with it yet.
