Quilters usually have many strips of fabric left over from previous projects and wonder what to do with them. As the designer of the Twisted Triangles Template, I wanted to find a new way to use the template to make it even more useful. My piles of leftover fabric strips got me thinking, and I found the template works great for designing a scrappy quilt top. I’m so pleased that this template has been a best seller since it was released last year. Customers are buying them faster than we can manufacture them! How to Make a Scrappy Quilt
- Gather fabric strips from your scrap bins and follow along. I’ll show you how to make this fun, stash-busting quilt top.
- You’ll need 40, 2-1/2″ strips, along with a rotary cutter, ruler, cutting mat, and the Twisted Triangles Template.
- Divide your strips into three piles: two piles of 11 strips each, and one pile with the remaining 18 strips.
- Pair up each of the 11 fabrics in one stack with one of the 11 fabrics in the other stack. Put them right sides together.
- Subcut each pair into 5″ lengths.
- Chain stitch each pair together along the short edges.
- Press stitching lines, then press seams open.
- Arrange pairs in whatever order you like. Then, stitch short edges together to create a strata.
- Press each seam open as you link the pairs together.
- Take one of the strips from your remaining pile of 18. Center it over your completed strata.
- Sew the lengthwise edges of the strips together.
- Repeat with the remaining strips.
- Place the Twisted Triangles Template along adjoining seams of the 5″ blocks and attached strip.
- Use a rotary cutter to cut completely around the template.
- Keep the “cut offs” to use in a scrappy border.
- Lay out cut pieces in a pleasing arrangement.
- Stitch pieces to form blocks.
- Arrange blocks in rows and stitch; sew rows together to create the quilt top.
- Add multiple borders to complete the quilt top to your liking. Layer, quilt, and bind using your favorite techniques.
If you prefer a more coordinated look, make your strata from a precut fabric strip pack that includes at least 40, 2-1/2″ fabric strips.

What size does the scrappy quilt make using the 40 2 1/2 strips. I want to make one as the Twisted Triangle template technique makes it so easy to line up the seams.
Donna, The size of the scrappy quilt using 40 strips 2-1/2 inches wide using the Twisted Triangle Template is 44-1/2”W x 59”H.

This is a nice, easy way to put a quilt together. The Twisted Triangles Template sure does make it easy to line up the seams to cut in the right place. What a great idea.
