Choose one or more of these fun summer-themed sewing projects and stitch some sunshine into your next picnic, pool party, or road trip. Whether you’re heading to the park, backyard, or beach—there’s an easy-to-make project for you. Here’s a roundup of a few of my favorite summertime sewing projects:

Mermaid Dress Up

NancyZieman MermaidTailsGrab this quick sewing tutorial and create a mermaid tail for dress-up all-year long. The idea came from my granddaughters. After watching Doll Costume Dress Up on Sewing With Nancy, my oldest granddaughter Avery promptly asked, “Gramma, for my birthday could you make a mermaid costume for my doll and one for me too? Now, don’t make an opening for my feet, I can swim like a mermaid with a tail!”  Then I asked her sister, Luella what she would like for her birthday. Answer: “Same as Avery!” So, two mermaid sets—big and small—were the task. (Much to Avery’s dismay, I made the big-girl fish tails with openings for feet!)

Colorful Bean Bag Toss

BeanBags NancyZieman Last

Does your family have reunions? Are you planning any summer birthday parties? One of my family’s favorite outdoor games goes by quite a few names, but in short can be called bean bag toss. What would the game be without festive, colorful bags? Today, learn how to sew your own bean bags or corn bags, then play cornhole, tailgate, bean bag toss, doghouse, Baggo, or, whew, just plain bags. This is a perfect afternoon sewing project to create with kids. Then, go have some backyard fun. Find the bean bag sewing tutorial here.

Sew a Casserole Carrier

CasseroleCarrier
Stitch this Casserole Carrier project in an evening or two. Then, let your tasteful carrier help you get a handle on things. Cook, place a casserole in the center, wrap and GO! An insulated carrier is perfect for picnics and potluck dinners. The inner insulated pocket lets you store a hot or cold pack to keep the temperature of your dish just right. The carrier folds flat when not in use and can be laundered. See how easy it is to create this carrier, here.

Sew Easy Summer Napkins

Nancy Zieman Mitered Napkin Finished1

These easy to make napkins are ideal for a summer luncheon, picnic, or handmade hostess gift. Stitch a set of four napkins in an hour or less with my sew-easy mitered corner technique. Showcase your favorite fabrics by mixing or matching fabric groupings, or make them from one fabric.  Find the sewing tutorial for Easy Summer Napkins, here.

Sew a Kids’ Hooded Towel Wrap

Sew a Hooded Towel Wrap for KidsGet ready for some cuteness! (I could be prejudice since Luella and Avery are my precious granddaughters.) Sew a hooded towel wrap for the beach or bath time. We have a special gift for you today. It’s a free project sheet of sewing appliqués—the Owl and Teddy Bear faces—to stitch on the Towel Wraps that Luella and Avery are wearing.

 Make a Beach Towel Wrap

Cool Off with a Pool Noodle Chair

PoolNoodleChairYes! You can sew your own Pool Noodle Lounger! Using mesh fabric and grosgrain ribbon, create a lounge-style seat that fits over a swimming noodle. Make one for yourself and another for a friend, and then share lazy summer afternoons seated and relaxed in the water—making more memories. Portable Chalkboard Roll-Up

Chalkboard

Whether it is a gift or simply a road-trip-sanity-saver, this Portable Chalkboard Roll-Up will be a hit with the kids, and probably the adults, in your life, too. I’m past the halfway mark on a king-sized quilt and a stuffed giraffe. Cannot wait to be finished with it so I work on some smaller Christmas projects: aprons, a table runner, a mantle cover and a throw quilt for a sick friend. More than enough to keep me busy!

I plan on sewing Christmas gifts this summer, possibly potholders to be included in gifts with hot cocoa, marshmallows, and perhaps a candycane. I have seen the pool noodle chair on “Sewing with Nancy” and have written that down as a “thing to do”. When we go to the lake we’re always bringing floaties, which have to be blown up and lugged to and fro. I love the look of these, and they would be easy to carry and store. Add the beach towel wrap for a hands-free trip back to the van so I am able to carry everything back easily without worrying my towels going to slip off, and I’ve got a start to a great summer!

Currently, I’m sewing some baby items for the manager of my apartment house; she’s expecting her first child in July. I’m also working on a pair of lightweight fleece sleep pants -title theme- for my 16 year old granddaughter. After those are finished, I’m starting in some chemo caps for my regional cancer center. Retirement and sewing go together!!
