Nancy Zieman Super Size Quilts 1What happens when a clothing sewing teacher starts to quilt? Answer: She teaches a hybrid of techniques! That teacher was Nancy and her journey of breaking sewing and quilting rules all started when she taught a quilting class as part of her first job out of college. Nancy didn’t know much about quilting, but was determined to learn. Nancy also decided to apply sewing tips to the quilting side of being creative. Some might call it breaking the rules. Nancy said, “It’s a hybrid technique!”

You’ll find Nancy’s quilting hybrid techniques in the series, The Best of Sewing With Nancy’s Super Sized Quilts.

Drunkard’s Path

Curves in any design provide movement and interest. That principle applies to quilts as well. Yet, when fabrics are cut and seamed to create curves, the process can be frustrating trying to get the opposing shapes to turn out smooth! To make the process enjoyable, Nancy shows a method of creating curves that breaks traditional quilting rules—using fusible interfacing!

Here’s a quick summary on how to break quilting rules!

Carefree Curves from Clover by Nancy Zieman, Sewing With Nancy

  • Cut squares of fabric and fusible interfacing. Stack the right side of the fabric and the smooth side of the lightweight interfacing.
  • Trace a circle size. There are three size options.

Hearts and Gizzards Quilt

Traditional quilt blocks often have unique names. This Hearts and Gizzards design, a quilt pattern from the 1800s, features a gizzard shape, opposite the recognizable heart motif. Over a hundred years ago, this design was created with difficulty, and generally in small block sizes. Now learn how fusible interfacing makes it easy to create curves while creating jumbo-sized blocks.

Carefree Curves 4 Nancy Zieman

  • Trace the heart shapes on a strip of fabric. There are five size options—traditional to super-sized!

  • After cutting apart along the straight edges, position the right side of the fabric on the smooth (non-fusible) side of a strip of interfacing. Stitch along the curves.

  • Trim away the excess fabric, using the same techniques as detailed above. You’ll find step-by-step instructions in the book and when watching the online video.

  • Turn and press; then appliqué heart shapes to a block or half-square triangle.

I’m currently working on 2 quilts. One is a 9 patch block set on point in pink fabrics for a baby gift. The other is a large quilt in a fall theme. About 25 yrs ago I photographed a forest area in the fall, I always felt it would make a great scenic quilt. Finally started it this spring.

My current quilt project is my son’s T-shirt quilt. I plan to give it to him for his 40th birthday. It includes mostly 4-H and school shirts. I have included machine embroidery and photo transfers. Better late than never! I made his wife’s quilt a few years ago, using the other Super-sized pattern from Nancy.

I believe for most of us a better question would be what quilting projects, plural, are we working on. I believe most of us have numerous ones. Mine are currently: Big Dahlia, 2-Square in a square, Jacobean Journey, Log Cabin, plus several tablerunners, Christmas quilt projects and on and on………. Some of us just cannot pass up starting one more project before we finish the last 30!! Love the Trace & Quilt templates especially for the Big Block quilts. These should be more quickly finished than piecing the smaller blocks.

I am currently working on a challenge quilt through my local guild. Everyone recieved a paint chip with 3 shades of a color. You can only use those 3 colors as well as white, black, cream and black and white or black and cream. It has been an interesting time as what I decide to make is predicated on what fabric I can find. My quilt will be wacky flowers.

I am one of those that starts a quilt project and never finishes it, so I started a “large square” project in flannel hoping I will finish it by winter time. A while back my neighbor gave me some ties that belonged to her husband, who had passed. I have been working on making a quilt for her (a surprise). The hard part was figuring out a design I liked and could make. It has diamonds and half square triangles.(thanks nancy’s videos) It is looking pretty good I think, and is a little bigger than a twin size. I hope she will like it.

My current project is for my granddaughter who is sreaching her 6th birthday soon. I planned to make a biscuit quilt for her double bed, but when I asked her what she’d like on it, I had to rethink the project quickly. Fortunately it won’t be needed until late fall. She wants a quilt made with giraffes, elephants, pandas, foxes, birds and butterflies. How to get all that on one quilt? Well, I was looking through several websites and happened upon one that featured crazy-quilted animals. So, I got a couple of the patterns, and am currently stitching out elephants and giraffes. Think I’m gonna make a row of each animal. Here’s the kicker:This artsy little girl wants teal, purple, pink in this quilt. SOooo, her granny is making a row of giraffes in the crazy quilt fashion across the quilt. Each one will be in a different colorway. Plan to do the same with each of her favorite animals. Now to get it finished before she dreams up some other critters!
I LOVE the idea of piecing the way described by Nancy. What a clever idea to fuse the applique down rather than all that curved piecing! I am so glad her company is continuing to share her wonderful ideas! Thanks for the opportunity to win the ruler sets. They will be so helpful to some lucky winner!

I am currently working on a handkerchief quiltlet for my aunt with Pancreatic Cancer. The hankies were my grandmothers and her twin sister asked if I would put this together for her. This is a big project, as I have not done this before and learning as I go plus I am working against a clock of life.
