PartOne Precuts First NancyZieman 1
Specialty cuts of coordinated fabrics wrapped in a bundle, are a common, convenient way to test out a new fabric line. I think of these bundles as a gift of potential! But that potential can be elusive if you’re hesitant to untie the ribbon and create something special. On today’s episode of Sewing With Nancy, Maria DeGroot, a teacher who specializes in making quilt projects from fabric bundles, joins us. Watch the first episode of this NEW! three-part series—Precut Fabric for Speedy Projects.

Before her monthly quilting club meeting, Maria searches for a bundle of precut fabrics. She dreams of what could be made from the stack of 40 cuts, then she puts that dream into reality. Bundles of 5″ squares are an ideal starting point for a quilt. Most of the fabrics used in our featured projects were precut! You don’t need to make decisions on which fabrics go together. Plus, most of the cutting work is complete.

Season 31 of Sewing With Nancy | Nancy Zieman | Charm Pack Quilts | Precut Fabrics for Speedy Quilts

Precut Reference

We’ll be using precut fabrics throughout this three-part series of Sewing With Nancy. If you’re curious what we mean by “precut fabrics,” here’s a quick reference:

  • 5″ squares: Charm Packs or 5″ Stackers
  • 10″ squares: Layer Cakes, Ten Squares, or 10″ Stackers
  • 2-1/2″ squares: Mini-Charms
  • Fat Quarter: 18″ x 22″
  • 2-1/2″ strips: Jelly Rolls, Roll-ups, Design Rolls, Rolie Polie
  • 5″ strips: Dessert Rolls, Charm Rolls
  • 1-1/2″ strips: Honey Buns, Skinny Strips
  • 6″ triangles and hexagons are also available, but not in this series

Charm Pack Scramble Quilt

By mixing one charm pack and two pieces of cut yardage, cream and rose, the first quilt creates a very orderly random quilt. Sounds like a paradox, but the random placement of each 5″ square keeps the quilt moving and coordinated while the rose and cream fabrics bring order to the design.  Marie will show us how easy this quilt is to make on today’s episode.

Charm Pack Scramble Variations

It’s amazing how cutting a basic 9-patch block into four sections and then shuffling the components can change the design of a quilt block. Now expand that concept, making a Charm Pack Double Scramble block. It’s a super-sized block that looks complicated, but that’s easily created by thinking outside the box. You won’t want to miss the magic on today’s NEW! Sewing With Nancy episode.

Fabric Precut NancyZieman 4

Maria and I show you how to assemble and stitch the basic 9-patch block. It is the stepping-stone for a much more complicated-looking design. Notice, I said “complicated-looking.” Of course the actual block couldn’t be easier!

 Fours the Charm Quilt

Stitch four, 5″ blocks together into a traditional arrangement, then see what possibilities await you. A simple cut from point to point and the addition of a strip, turn what was once a basic 4-patch block into the Fours the Charm block.  See how easy it is to cut and add the strip on today’s new episodePrecut Fabric for Speedy Projects on Sewing With Nancy.

Basic block construction coupled with a secondary cut or two is the key to producing interesting quilts with charm packs. Give it a try!

Charm packs and jelly rolls are the precuts that I purchase most frequently… but they are all so convenient, and they cut way down on the time spent with larger pieces of fabric. 🙂

I seem to buy charm packs and layer cakes most often. I feel the layer cake is the most versatile because it can be cut into 5 ” squares, 2 1/2 ” squares, 2 1/2″ strips and can be used for more precut patterns than any other size.

    August 10, 2017

I am a beginner quilter and choosing fabric is a dauntless task. The only quilting fabric I have bought is jelly rolls because of their coordination, but have yet to make anything with them. They are so pretty I don’t want to make a mistake by choosing the wrong pattern. I would be so grateful to win this book to point me in the right direction. Thank you for this opportunity.

    Hi Nancy,

I purchase charm packs and fat quarters mostly. I have actually made the bodice of a dress for fall with an Autumn-inspired charm pack, and a lovely handbag with a sewing-themed charm pack. They both turned out great (the dress bodice was a little tricky) and I have had many compliments on both projects. I think I would like to try the Fours the Charm quilt for my next project. I’m a beginner quilter, so I think this would be an easy intro to quilting. Thanks for all your shows over the years, and thanks for the opportunity to win this book. I look forward to the new season. 🙂

I have a box layered with layer cakes and when I get at them, some beautiful quilts will bloom. They can be used whole or subcut for accent pieces, all coordinated. Whoever developed this idea to promote a while line of fabrics is a genius.

When buying fabric online I like to get a charm pack first so that I can see the actual colors and quality of the fabric before committing to yardage. Fat quarters are fun so I can have a variety of fabric.

I really love several of the quilts shown on this news letter. I have a stash of fat quarters and a few 6-8″ strip cuts that could eat up a number of the projects in your book, in addition to 2 grandsons who love the baby quilts I’ve made for them which they have out grown (ages 5 & 10 now). However, they are the perfect age to go through my stash and select fabics for another quilt, each. Being home schooled, they will be able to see the incorporation of math and geometry into the making of their quilts. This would be a great adventure together!

I enjoy charm packs and layer cakes, sometimes I can interchange the layer cakes into charm packs to get more bang for my buck.

I usually purchase the 2 1/2 strips. I bought a lot of rolls before I retired. My husband build a dresser to hold my quilting supplies. I loaded the top drawer with my rolls of strips, not thinking how much they weighed. My drawer started sagging, I had so many rolls in there. 🙂

I am now using up my rolls and welcome any new ideas to use them up.

I must confess I have never tried using precut fabric. I think it is something I may like to try as it takes the guesswork and time savings from trying to put fabric together at the store.

Fat Quarters or layer cakes/10″ squares……….that way if I wish to prewash; and they shrink a little I can cut them to the size I want,.
I never buy 2 1/2 strips as I had one wonderful jelly roll; and when I went to cut the strips I found that the strips were just slightly off….I showed this to the store clerk; she thought it was a mfg defect in cutting…….but it ruined my whole project as I had other fabric purchased to complete the quilt….which is still sitting in the tote. ……I have not found other fabric to go with the project……Fall batik,Cornucopia.

I purchase more layer Cakes which can be used as is or cut into charms, strips,, tumblers, triangles etc. So versitile. But my favorite precut is still the good old fat Quarter! It is the MOST versitile!

I love using the layer cake. You can cut it to so many different sizes and have beautifully matched patterns without all the trouble of matching yardage to make your own.

  • Ruth Henrichs

I have never used a layer cake, although I have purchased charm packs many times. Will have to expand my purchasing!

    August 10, 2017

It’s a tie between charms and jelly rolls. Both cuts can be used so many different ways. Oh no! Wait! I have several layer cakes in my fabric room. Forgot about those too. Guess you can say I love precuts and sometimes in a pinch will use my own fabric to make precuts, too.

  • WIN MADDOX
    August 10, 2017

I previously bought only fat quarters; now also buying the 10-inch squares. Only problem I have, I still like to set colors in vinegar and pre-rinse and dry. This does not work if you are wanting to keep a 10-inch square as they usually shrink to 9-5/8 by 9-7/8 inch as a rule…what to do. I was raised to pre-rinse, color set, and dry….oh my, oh my, oh my!!!!

I usually buy jelly rolls but if there’s a good sale I buy everything!! This book would really help me use up a lot of those “sale” fabrics I’ve accumulated behind my hubby’s back!!

    August 10, 2017

I am so hooked on precuts, it is like going to the bakery and selecting a variety of donuts, etc. I just got in yesterday’s mail 4 jelly rolls, well 3 and one 1 1/2 roll.of all solid colors, chocolate, grape & vanilla icing! I want to make some jelly roll quilts with the other print jelly rolls I already have and I also am thinking of using them with several layer cake collections and dessert rolls!
I have so many charm packs I need to get busy with all of them making quilts. So this book would definitely help me get to sewing, I don’t need any more fabric! Ha, HA!
I also just finished your autobiography and being born in 1949, and having had cancer of one hip, I suffered many of the same issues during my life as you have, so I feel a close relationship to you.

Being an old seamstress, it is difficult for me to break the yardage habit. I probably buy more fat quarters and getting into the jellyrolls now. I never know what to do with them though so this book would be perfect to give me direction. The magic you’ve done is awesome!!

I love collecting charm packs and mini-charm packs. They are quick and easy to sew into simple projects like potholders, zippered pouches, or easy tote bags. I would love to make the charm pack 1930s Barn Raising Log Cabin Quilt with my 1930s charm packs.

I usually like to have a few solid color white, cream or black jelly rolls to use when making quilts. The quilts go so quickly when I can border charm squares or layer cakes with the jelly rolls instead of having to cut out the strips.
Thanks for the ideas you gave on the video.

Precuts made it possible for me to have all the fabrics I love! So I can own the “eye candy” as well as the fabric I know what I am going to do with…after years of guessing how much yardage to buy for an unknown project, joy started with fat quarters and now there are strips and squares, etc, etc. And they save cutting time as well…what could be bad!
