Beginning Landscape Quilting—All About Trees

Landscape quilting is a technique that always piques great interest on Sewing With Nancy. Many of you have embraced this art and created wall quilts, featuring the beauty of nature. Others have voiced an interest yet are hesitant to start. Taking the challenge to further streamline the process, I’ve invited my quilting buddy, Natalie Sewell, to present a series on landscape quilting from a beginner’s perspective. You can watch the first episode online.

Landscape quilting by Natalie Sewell and Nancy Zieman, First Day of Summer by Nancy ZiemanLearn to Create Dark-Shaded Trees

During the three-part series, we take a simplified approach to landscape quilting. It’s all about trees—dark-shaded trees, light-colored tress, snow-accented trees! You’ll learn to messy-cut, glue, shade, and finally stitch a tree—ta-dah, you’re a landscape quilter.

Landscape quilting by Natalie Sewell and Nancy Zieman, inspirational photoFirst we’ll show you how to create a simple fall scene. Natalie’s quilt, October Evening, features dramatic trees and simple foliage. Instead of showing you how to make this specific design, we’ll detail how to easily create trees with my raw-edge appliqué technique.

Landscape quilting by Natalie Sewell and Nancy Zieman, October Evening by Natalie SewellYou’ll learn that your quilting “pattern” is no more, no less than an inspirational photo. You’re not going to create a wall quilt that looks just like the photo, only use the photo as a guideline. Watch online as we give fabric guidelines and create this scene. Find more information on the techniques in the book Beginning Landscape Quilting.

Natalie and I enjoy sharing our landscape quilts. Windy by Natalie Sewell 19″ x 22″ shows how simple, yet effective a design can be.

When you’d like to create a landscape featuring birch or aspen trees like Natalie’s design, Old Friends, some of the same designing principles apply, along with a few new tricks. In this design we’ll detail how to create depth and shape, and also how to improvise when you can’t find the exact leaf fabric.

I took some leeway with my quilt, Blue Birches, casting a blue hue to the birch trees.

Winter landscape scenes pose new design opportunities. River Birch Trees in Snow by Natalie, showcases the stark contrast between the snow and trees. We think you’ll be slightly surprised to learn all the fabric options when your inspiration comes from snow-covered ground.

We have 80 wooded acres, and I have been taking seasonal photos. I am drawn to winter paintings, but I would prefer autumn for a cloth landscape quilt.

We have a home on Mascoma Lake in NH. The first time we saw it was during the fall. The lake was surrounded with reds, yellows, oranges, and some greens and browns. I fell in love with the area and have spent many wonderful days there. The other seasons are beautiful as well, but autumn at Mascoma Lake is amazing. I have wanted to try landscape quilts for some time. My first try will definitely be inspired by autumn at the lake. Then, I’d like to do one for each of the other seasons at the lake.

My inspiration for landscape quilts came from your program many years ago. I did one with icebergs, a polar bear perched on he ledge watching a whale flip into the water. Ice flows with a mother and baby polar, and waves that sparkled. As the whale breached it cascaded water upwards into the sky meeting the northern lights, with the star formations in the sky made from sequins, a different colour for each. Many items were used to portray the scene I wanted, such as dyed lace and mesh, organza, coloured threads, beads, and my icebergs looked so cool. I donated it to the Alzheimer society for their fundraising.

Living in central Florida, we don’t get a lot of color from leaves in the fall, however there are trees which have beautiful hues of yellow and gold buds and flowers that bloom in the fall months. I’d love to be able to capture them in a landscape quilt!

I would like to try a fall scene. It reminds me of the many hours I have spent riding my horse through the high mountains of New Mexico . This form of quilting is something I would be very interested in learning. I love the idea of using fabric and thread as “paint”, if you will. Contrasting colors and textures is so appealing to me. Definitely will have to give this a go. Hmm, I think I know someone else that would love this; just not sure how receptive she’ll be to another new idea. I think some chocolate will work.

You wished to know which season I wanted to learn about. All of them. I live in a state that has 4 seasons a year. Since we retired last year, we had thought about moving to FL, but I hate giving up fall and winter. If I had to pick only one, I would have to say fall. I love the rich deep colors of the season. Even the majority of the fabrics I buy are in these colors.
Nancy I want to thank you for the years you have spent providing us sew-ers, quilters, and crafters with the supplies and inspiration and education we need to do the things we try to do as well as you. I pray you will have many more years to continue these gifts. JKB

My goodness, you have triggered a desire to step out of my comfort zone and try this. My first choice would be Indian Summer, the combination of colors for this would be endless and so exciting. Thank you so much for sharing this posting. I never had time to sew until I retired a few years ago. Being self taught I give myself permission to have fun, since I have had no one telling me that I can’t do something I experiment with textiles. There are no ‘wrong ways’ of doing anything … just different ways. Nancy, you are my role model and make everything look so simple. My son put a website on line for me a couple of months ago as he has been so proud of what ‘mom’ had learned to do that he said I needed to share what I make. He belongs to a running club called the Hash House Harriers so I have been able to increase my sewing abilities by making items for club members. I believe you are never too old to feel young again and sewing allows the inner child in me to play. If you are ever in Birmingham, AL come on over and let’s have a play date!

I have a beautiful river birch out my back window, with a pond behind it. It would be great to capture it in fabric! I have often thought of making a landscape quilt this just might be the impetus I need!

Oh my I love fall, but in the snow of winter, the tree line in the distance outside my window is stunning. I am not sure of my artistic abilities, but you and Natalie make it look so easy. I think I may have to try this.

I love landscape quilts-and yours are so pretty! I love all the landscape fabrics available now, and there isn’t a season I wouldn’t like to try. I would have to start with Autumn colors though. Thanks for the chance to win that great book, and for making it look so easy.

I am addicted to fall colors and am anxious to do my first landscape quilt–a fall birch tree interpretation. Our local nature preserve is sponsoring an art contest where nature is the inspiration for the artwork (and also my reason for doing a landscape quilt).

Sounds like such fun to do a landscape quilt. A springtime scene with dogwoods would be beautiful and will now be added to my fun to do list.

Nancy, I love watching you and Natalie on WUSF. I’ve seen
your landscape trees several times and am always fascinated
how you make them come alive.
I have never attempted one yet I would love to try.
I miss the snow up north. I have been in FL. so long. I still miss the snow at Christmas though.
I would love to make a winter quilt.
Keep up all your wonderful ideas.
    May God Bless you.

I’d like to try to create a landscape inspired design on a jacket or skirt, something with a little depth and interesting texture. I imagine swirling, colorful leaves or a gentle creek with birds, frogs, and other animals. I might try printing some of my own fabrics to mix in, if I can find the right source for a fabric base to make an appropriate apparel fabric. I’ve dyed textiles to use in garment making, previously. This would just add another interesting option.

I have been so impressed with the landscape quilts that I have seen. As much as I love to quilt, I have had reservations about trying landscape quilting, but this article has made it look very appealing. Love the look of the fall and winter trees, especially. As always, Nancy takes things to another level.

Fall is my favorite time of the year. A kind of winding down of the busy harvest season and the cooler temps are a prelude to winter. In the winter cooking and sewing are a top priority.

Beautiful artwork! I work with a 40 year old Consew commercial straight stitch machine. The feed dog does not drop down for free motion. You mentioned covering it, how do you accomplish this without interfearing with the bobbin thread pick up .

Like many of the other women on this site, I would like to try fall, because I love the shapes and colors of fall leaves.
Another choice, just as beautiful, would be Monument Valley, AZ, in Sept/Oct. Same reds and oranges, with a bright blue sky, and amazing white clouds…and the shapes!

I love your work! I am collecting fabric to be able to make my own quilt, but once I get home I think I don’t have the “right” fabric mix. I know I’m just stalling…..I want to make one but I too am scared. I’ve viewed your videos several times now and know I just need to jump in and do it.
    Thanks for the inspiration.
