Fall Sewing Projects Roundup from Team Nancy Zieman
With the leaves changing and the weather cooling, it is a perfect time to get stitching on fall sewing and quilting projects. You’ll find something for all skill levels, and all time-commitments, in this project round up.
Faux Hexagon Wall Hanging
Create a prairie-inspired wall hanging. At first glance, hexagon quilt block shapes can cause many quilters to think three-intersection-Y-seams! Not so with this Prairie-Style Faux-Hexagon Wall Hanging.
In this blog-exclusive free project, each hexagon shape is created with two halves, eliminating the intersection of three seams, otherwise known as Y-seams. With this technique, faux-hexagon halves are stitched in columns, with all straight seams, and with relative speed and ease. Plus, the results are dramatic!
Write-on Table Runner
A Chalkboard Table Runner is great for all seasons and occasions, plus it’s fast to create. Use this fun design at your next holiday potluck or dinner. Choose your favorite Christmas fabric, seasonal fabric, or a novelty fabric to frame the runner, and you’ll instantly add fun to your next gathering. Your guests will enjoy labeling their dishes to pass, or writing quick messages with chalk. What a novel idea!
Fast and Easy Dresden Sunflower
With this popular sewing tutorial, sew a fast and festive sunflower table topper using fabric scraps and Clover’s Trace ‘n Create Quilt Template—Dresden Collection. In as little as an afternoon, you’ll update your décor in time for the changing season.
Three-Block Fall Table Runner
We’d like to share a quilt block pattern that’s ideal for a table runner. Featured is the Box Quilt Block, which dates back to 1898, each 12-1/2″ block is made with eight half-square triangles and a center square. This pattern is included in the No-Hassle Triangles Quilt Blocks book, a quilt block sampler pattern book. Streamline the piecing process by using the No-Hassle Triangle tool. Find the complete sewing tutorial here. Please note: This free design was part of the Fall Table Runner Challenge 2015. The challenge is no longer open for entries.
Sew Strip by Strip Patchwork Quilts
Continuing with our theme of using strips of fabric to create a focal design, with the Tumbling Leaves design we introduce you to offsetting the strips and offsetting the cutting of the fabric. Create this version of strip by strip patchwork in fall shades or spring colors—you get to choose. Learn the easy techniques for construction on Sewing With Nancy.
Sew a Fall Fiber Art Piece
Almost 20 years ago, Nancy was introduced to landscape quilting techniques by Natalie Sewell, nationally known landscape quilt artist. Natalie and Nancy became best friends and scheduled two or three quilting dates each year. During the three-part Sewing With Nancy series, Beginning Landscape Quilting, They simplified the process so that everyone interested could enjoy the pleasure of creating outdoor scenes in fabric.
Happy Sewing,

Fall is my favorite time of the year! I’ve not made a fall quilt of craft project, until this year. I’ve made one block of a pieced maple leaf. Plan to make a quilt using fall colored baltics and prints. Joining the blocks with cream solid and pumpkins in the corners.
I would love to win this giveaway for my next project!
Max
Fall sewing projects are accent pieces from for home–table runners, place mats, etc. All in the beautiful fall colors and designs.

Fall means it’s really time to hop onto those Christmas sewing projects: embroidered/quilted stockings, holiday table runners & gifts for all my sewing/quilting friends.
Karen A
I have a hexagon quilt that is assembled similar to your table runner. It is in gorgeous fall colors and I love having it displayed this season.

I am making my second table runner to reflect the harvest. Fall seems short as it morphs into the holidays and winter. I have a gift project also in the works. Clever hexagon project.

I love the colors of fall. Living in Florida I do not see the changing of the leaves and fabric substitutes for it.
Ann West
Fall is a wonderful time of year – especially for quilting. I really loved the batik Dresden plate sunflower table topper. Thanks.

Out of doors, the colors of fall means cooler temperatures. Used inside, those same colors bring the feelings of warmth and family. It is a joy to see Nancy and her creative team’s ideas used in my home. Thank you all for continuing Nancy’s legacy.
Ruthann Kauffman

Love your products! Easy to use and of good quality. Teaching my granddaughter is a pleasure with easy to follow instructions and techniques. Her sitting on my lap with my hands beside hers is a memory I will keep forever in my heart. The paper-pieced heart doll quilt turned out beautifully. We put a tiny sleeve on the back for a wall hanging when the time for dolls has past. I, myself, have learned so much from the many episodes. Thank you.
Mary Brock

I’ve always wanted to make a Dresden plate quilt or pillow. I remember trying 30 years ago but it was not pretty.

I remember trying 40 years ago to make a Dresden Plate but it was not pretty. I would like to win your give away tools this time. The first thing I invested in of Nancy’s was her Spools 3 ring binder. I am 68 and it seems like I’ve always had Nancy to learn from.

Thank you for continuing this so beautifully. It is a fitting legacy to that wonderful woman. Even as a non-sewer I would watch her shows just for the low-key warmth and welcome she brought to each show. Unlike so, so many ‘how to’ shows, there was no need for anything flashy or fancy in the production, because the gold was right in front of our eyes already. Because of her, I am learning to sew, and I thank you for continuing the richness of all of these offerings, in the spirit of this gem of a human being. Nancy didn’t just teach us how to sew.
RITA
I am fascinated with the landscape quieting project and want to make one eventually. They are so beautiful.
Deb Scott
I had always thought the Dresden taletopper beyond my ability. Now thanks to basic training I get from ‘Sewing with Nancy’ I know not only the colors to get but also how to do it. Relearning clothes and household items after many years.

Fall actually happened overnight here in southwest Missouri! We had to learn how to dress again! Other than daffodils, the fall colors are my most favorite — can’t wear them, but I can and do piece and quilt them. Thank you for all of the gorgeous ideas — always! pj stitches!

Love the half hexies project. No more Y seams!

I have a Dresden plate quilt that my great aunt gave me. I believe it was made at least 50 years ago. She and her sister each made the quilts’ one in gold printed orange and one in gold printed turquoise fabric. I have the Turqoise scraps and may try to make my first Dresden plate!

Always admired the dresden pattern in various sizes. I’ve never tried one before but it would be a good challenge and something new to learn.

The Dresdan sunflower is eye-catching and would love to be able to create that. Sunflowers are so cheery that with different fabric choices, one could really create visual excitement.
Diane Langham
Wish I’d thought of sewing strips together and had that wedge tool-ruler before my recent Halloween project. The table mat turned out okay, but the Trace and Create Template could have saved me the extra effort! Next time… I’ll know better whether I win the set or not. Great combo of tools to have.
Linda
I so miss seeing new episodes with this woman…grateful we have so many saved instruction videos to watch!!
Gail Schermer
I don’t usually sew for the seasons, but made a table runner based on the table runner contest. I had a great time doing this and am making a pair of them, one for each leg of my counter. Love Nancy and will miss her.
