Sewing With Nancy with Host Nancy Zieman at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo in Puyallup WA

One of our favorite Sewing With Nancy memories is when the Nancy Zieman team “took the show on the road”, and recorded at the 2014 Sewing & Stitchery Expo in Puyallup, Washington –near Seattle, WA– where over 30,000 sewing enthusiasts gather to share, learn, and enjoy their love of sewing! Our friends at Washington State University State Extension, along with many talented volunteer Clothing & Textile Advisors (CTAs), host the annual Sewing & Stitchery Expo.

To help celebrate the 30th anniversary of this mega sewing event, the Sewing With Nancy crew packed up their camera equipment – and for the first time ever – we took Sewing With Nancy On The Road to capture the unique camaraderie between sewing pattern designers, teachers, vendors, and event attendees.

Stitching a Sewing Community Together is this week’s Sewing With Nancy online video feature and here’s a preview of the exciting events Nancy and team captured on location:

Kathy Marrone, editor of Vogue Pattern magazine and also representing The McCall Pattern Company, presents a unique point of view of what a pattern company learns from attending a sewing event. Her insight might surprise you! (Notice the thumbs-up sign from Ben, our director. It was a good “take!” Great job, Nancy!)

Style Show Anyone?

Mary Collen, style show manager for the Sewing & Stitchery Expo, shares behind-the-scene activities of orchestrating approximately 14 free style shows during the 4-day event. (There’s Inga-sound tech on the left, Mike-videographer in the center, on the far right is Richard Zieman-crowd control 😉 and you don’t see Deanna Springer-because she’s always taking the behind the scenes photos – that you see here in the NZP Blog).

Meet and Greet

One of Nancy’s favorite things to do at the Sewing & Stitchery Expo was to present her sewing seminars and meet other sewing enthusiasts. After each of Nancy’s seminars, an enthusiastic group would gather for some one-on-one time with Nancy.

The 2020 Sewing & Stitchery Expo is February 27 – March 1, 2020. Start planning your trip now! If you’re lucky, you might see Mount Rainier. On the day we packed up our gear and headed for airport, the mountain graced the sky. In the lower right corner of the photo Deanna snapped, you can see Mount Rainier. Nancy always shared with us that she attended the show for 10 years before she ever saw the majestic mountain, and she was starting to think that the much talked about mountain was photoshopped into pictures!

The Absolute Easiest Way to Sew by Sewing With Nancy Zieman

Her comment is: It has been a long time since I have done garment sewing, but I think the book would give helpful reminders of stitching, grading and ironing techniques that I have read about and tried in the past. The bottom line is to keep sewing and using the helpful methods more often. Thanks for the opportunity for this useful book.

That is too funny that Nancy went to the Washington Sewing Expo for 10 years before seeing Mt. Rainier!! I’d probably have thought the same thing that she did after 10 years!! The book by her husband must be a great tribute to her, but I’m not sure I could read it without crying…. She was quite a lady!!

I am one of the fortunate ones to live in Washington, just a short way from Puyallup. I was at the original Sewing Expo (held in Tacoma at that time). My mother and I attend every year (she’s 86 now), would attend one of Nancy’s seminars, visit her booth, (when she had one) and loved the Friday Night shows with Nancy. We were there for Nancy’s last one. Her sense of humor was fabulous! She is missed.

I find it absolutely amazing (as well as charming) that half square triangle blocks are so versatile and can give so many design options with a simple twist or a turn. Love the Seeing with Nancy TV productions and watch and pvr them every week.

I remember getting up on Saturday mornings and looking forward to SWN. When they preempted the show to do fund raising, it was always a let down. The sewing world and the world in general was truly enriched by Nancy’s life.

I go to the Sew Expo every year, I live a few miles from the venue. Nancy was always very gracious when she was here, I enjoyed her ‘talks’, she was quite the entertainer. And yes, there really is a Mt, Rainier and it is absolutely beautiful and majestic when she shows up.

I am so glad I still can see Nancy’s posts and get many ideas and posts helpful for projects. I would very much love to read the story her husband has shared. It would be a pleasure to receive. Nancy was such a wonderful host on all the TV programs and I still love watching them.
    Thanks for all the hints.

I loved watching Nancy for sew many years. I was fortunate to meet her at a sewing event in Colorado and was so impressed at how she presented and then was so beautifully gracious while doing the meet and greet. She was taken too early.

I just love Sewing with Nancy as it still will come on CREATE PBS here in Virginia Beach VA. I feel privileged that sometimes I am at home to watch it – otherwise there is her website with videos. She was the greatest and passed away much too soon as she had plenty to share with the world on all sewing. I would love to read how her husband loved her and wrote a book on her family and friends.

I have admired Nancy and her family for years. Her legacy lives on in the many sewists who have learned from her. Our family were especially blessed in our personal contact with her. God bless her husband and their family.

I have been a loyal fan Nancy’s for over 25 years. I have dreamed many times about attending the Expo in Puyallup, but have never had the opportunity. I have most of Nancy’s VCR tapes, many of her DVD’s, many of her books and a large notebook filled with her pamphlets. My most treasured possessions are a letter I received from Nancy after visiting the store in Beaver Dam. Nancy was in a meeting and though I spent hours in the store, she was unable to get away to meet me. She graciously sent me a letter expressing her regret at not having been available; the second treasure is a personally signed copy of “Seams Unlikely”. I would absolutely LOVE to have a copy of her husbands book to complete my library. I agree with others who have posted here – Nancy was taken from us far too early, but I guess God needed her in heaven.
