You might think that Log Cabin quilt blocks are very predictable—red center block with dark fabric strips added to one side, and light strips added to the other. Not necessarily! This week we welcome back Natalia Bonner, author and modern quilt designer, who takes an unconventional approach to traditional Log Cabin block design. Tune in and watch part two of this new Sewing With Nancy series titled, Cabin Fever Quilts.

Natalia Bonner and Nancy Zieman on the Set of the Sewing With Nancy TV Show for Cabin Fever QuiltsIn Cabin Fever Quilts part two, we’ll start by creating Natalia’s Dappled Quilt. Natalia’s intricate design of intersecting squares starts with a very simple Log Cabin Quarter-log block on point. Watch as we show you the tricks of modern quilting and soon, you too, will have Cabin Fever.

Next up in Cabin Fever Quilts part two, we’ll break down Natalia’s Nonchalant Quilt—an easy one-block quilt made in just two colors plus white.

    December 10, 2015

I am not a quilter, having struggled to finish one large and 2 small. Mostly this is because the patterns don’t appeal and because I am colour challenged when trying to put colour ways together. However I was immediately drawn to these simple modern designs – the Nonchalant in particular. It has a timeless appeal about it, and is a design I would love to make.

I was so intrigued by these versions of log cabin (a favorite of mine). This is the first time I’ve been inspired to do more modern quilting. I especially liked the Dappled Quilt for design elements. When I saw the final square being cut in half I immediately thought “is that waste?” Then the pillows using the extra pieces inspired me to consider this for my next project. Very clever designing!

  • Allison Nesbitt

It’s a tie. Nonchalant and Peaches and Cream really Caught my attention. Although, I really like the use of white in all the quilts. Just finished a t-shirt quilt for my daughter, but anxious to give one of these a try for my next project.
