Dress up is fun for all ages, in particular for kids! Rather than sewing a full-sized costume, sew doll clothes for 18″ dolls—a wonderful way to nurture imaginative play. Doll Costume Dress Up is this week’s featured Sewing With Nancy online TV show with authorJoan Hinds. Watch Doll Costume Dress Up online!

Here’s a preview of the doll clothes patterns and sewing tips.

Cowgirl Doll Pattern

Sewing for dolls gives us permission to try a variety of techniques and to work with unique fabrics. The Cowgirl outfit is the case in point! Adding fringe to a cow print is not the norm for sewing. Yet, with this costume, your little girl and her doll will win first prize in the imaginative rodeo.

I definitely would make several of them since I have a 18″ doll that I bought for my daughter when she was 2… a daisy doll and I made dress for the doll to match her dresses that I made for her. I would have to start with the CowGirl outfil since my daughter did/does ride horses and at one time did competion, and this outfit reminds me of those days.

I would certainly have to make the Ladybug costume as ladybugs are my granddaughter, Ella’s favorite things. But the dilemma would then be what to make for the other 8 “girls” that we play with between the 2 of us. I’m so glad to have a little girl to play dolls with again as I don’t think I would ever get enough of it. Thank you, Nancy, for your wonderful show. Hi Nancy! Thanks for this second opportunity to look into the Doll Costume book. They are all so clever and cute! I did talk to my granddaughters and found to my surprise that the eldest wanted the Southern Belle costume and the youngest wanted the Bride costume. Another book you have championed that I must purchase! I have saved many outfits from my own youth to make into the same (basically) outfit for my doll and have been waiting years to get the time to do so. The time i am finding now in retirement. I just love this stuff!

My daughter and I do a lot of crocheting and sewing for the Women’s Trauma Center, for the VA Hosp. and we usually dress at least two if not three dolls or little stuffed animals for our Bell State Bank and Trust Xmas gift giving, all in Fargo, ND. Love the little poodle skirt pattern – and yes, I had one almost exactly like it; made a circle skirt in a cotton print while in high school, (1953.) I’m just now getting my sewing room set up since moving into my new husband’s home. Looking forward to sewing even more than before.

We own horses and live on a farm, so a cowboy outfit would be perfect for my granddaughter’s doll. I’m even enjoying playing with dolls. Love Joan Hinds books, and love the Nancy Zieman videos. Keep u the great work!

My granddaughter, Bianca, and I would really like to make two of the costumes together: the Cowgirl and the Super Girl. My husband and I are rearing two grandchildren (ages 3 and 9)–not easy since we are in our mid-to-late fifties; it’s harder than I remembered! I stay at home to be available to the kids. I LOVE sewing and would like to teach Bianca to sew. These would be great projects for us to do together. Thanks.

I recently retired and hope to restart my hobby of sewing for dolls. I always have trouble with the small scale and the wrists on the dresses end up just barely able to slide over the hand. I look forward to the series on doll sewing and hope to pick up some tips to improve my sewing and reinvigorate my interest in dressing my dolls. My last foray was in cutting up orphaned socks for doll dresses(no sewing) for 16 and 18 inch dolls: fun, quick, and easy but the collar area all look the same!

    Thanks,

    Kathy

Since every little girl needs a super hero doll to play with, I would first make the that doll outfit, followed by the Halloween costume, because I’d love to use that design in a variety of ways for her dolls.

I would love to make the rodeo costume and have it on a doll as a prize for the top time winner in the junior division barrel racing during our Stanley Rodeo Game Show next summer. My husband and I do the planning and running during this event where we get up to 70 riders aged 6 through 76. These are all adorable and when I have granddaughters or just for my own collection of dolls, I would love to make even the costume on the cover. Thank you Nancy for sharing your talent and the talents of others during your show. I graduated from U.W.-Stout in 1975 as well.

I would make the cowgirl costume. I made a similar one for my daughter about 10 years ago – I used a cow print and fringe, too! This costume brought a flood of happy memories. Thank you!

After looking at the pictures of the doll clothes I am unable to decide witch one I would do. There for I would have to start at the beginning of the book and work my way through to the end.
My Grandaughter would just love them all and am sure her playmates would be asking me for them as well.

I’m delighted to be sewing doll clothes again, now that I have a young granddaughter. As she’s very much into costumes these days, I know she’d enjoy having some costumes for her dolls. This book would sure be appreciated at my house!

I loved all of the costumes. I especially liked the cowgirl. I grew up watching westerns on TV and i still love watching the old reruns. The cowgirl costume reminds me of the outfit that Dale Evans used to wear on the Roy Rogers Show. Those were the good ole days!!!!

My granddaughters need to see what their fashionable grandmother wore back in the fifties! I would definitely sew the gray poodle skirt outfit and then bring out my black and white saddle shoes which I have saved for all of these years and let them play dress up too.

I want to make each of the costumes, they are all so adorable!

However, the first thing I’m making is the little cowgirl outfit for my young granddaughter, who loves her dolls and horses. That will be like the best of both worlds. Thank you for the opportunity.

I would love to make the gone with the wind type dress in green. I have made other period dresses, Keeper Dollies Duds, and love to learn new sewing tips along the way, I also have sewn the easy type dresses such as Joan Hines has patterns for; either way I love to sew. Dressing dolls is one of my favorite things to do.
