You’re invited to the firsSewing Along With Nancy Zieman. I’ve written 10 easy steps, posting, a step a day for 10 days. My hope is that you’ll sew a bed quilt from your stash and then give it away! In short, Quilt to Give. Here’s why.

Tornadoes, floods, and fires have recently devastated thousands of homes. We’ve all seen video on TV and online of the unbelievable destruction. Monetary donations are greatly needed—and I’m sure many of us have been able to contribute. In addition, making and giving needed bed quilts is another way of showing support and encouragement.

Bed quilts—twin, double, queen, king—are what I’d like to encourage you to make.  Quilts of substantial size that can fully cover a bed show our love to those we will likely never meet, yet whose images fill our minds.

The quilt design is a modification of one that I presented on TV. It can easily be made from a collective fabric stash with perhaps a few purchased additions. You can easily create a Quilt to Give by yourself, or invite friends to sew with you.

The quilt design is simple and found in the book Column Quilts. Instead of a specific patchwork pattern in the center of each column, a patchy section is in the middle.  Here’s a listing of what you’ll learn in 10 days, a lesson a day:

Step 1—Sort out fabrics from several stashes

Step 2—Cut column strips and center patchy strips

Step 3—Stitch column lengths

Step 4—Stitch the patchy center columns

Step 5—Create the columns

Step 6—Piece the quilt top

Step 7—Audition borders

Step 8—Add borders

Step 9—Layer and quilt your creation

Step 10—Binding and labeling

So, gather fabrics, encourage friends, get together for several quilting sessions, enjoy the process, thank God for the many blessing you have, and then give away the quilt.

The gift is in the giving!

Nancy, This is such a great idea! With all the tragedies happening all over the world… so many people have lost everything they own. I look forward to every post and seeing the wonderful quilts that will be donated to these organizations!

This is a great  project. Do I need to purchase the book to participate? I certainly have the fabric to make one!

Exciting and colorful quilt. I LOVE your 10-Step breakdown, and will use this system for future projects! Reminds me of a 12-Step Program – perhaps this is really an intervention for fabric addicts?!? 🙂 I don’t know why I haven’t thought of quilting this way before, but a project can seem overwhelming when I look at it from start to finish – a fact that frequently keeps me from getting started. Thanks to you, I’m feeling a whole new sense of motivation!
