Nancy Zieman Sewing With Nancy Nancy's Corner Military Quilt Honor Quilt with Cathy Ott

We sew because we like the process. We sew because we like the end result. And, we also sew, on occasion, to honor special people in our lives. My Nancy’s Corner guest, on the Sewing With Nancy program Fancy Footworks 2, created a gift of a quilt that crossed decades, using military uniforms as the fabric to honor military service.

Major Cathy Ott, Retired, made a very special quilt to honor the military service. She made it for her daughter’s boyfriend, who is a specialist in the United States Army Reserve. The quilt is composed of five different uniforms. One is a current uniform from today. The other four uniforms are ones Cathy wore in the military, including one from Vietnam. She incorporated several batiks in brown and black to enhance the colors in the uniform fabric.

A pocket from one of her uniforms and Velcro pieces are used to hold military patches and other memorabilia.

The quilt was made for her daughter’s friend to take with him if he gets deployed, so that he would have something warm and comfortable from home.
