Quilt With An Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons by Eileen Roche as Seen on Sewing With Nancy with Nancy Zieman

February is National Embroidery Month!

If you own an embroidery machine, most likely you’ve added monograms to towels or a cute design to baby clothes. But, did you ever think that your embroidery machine’s hidden talent is to quilt layers of fabric with remarkable finesse? Welcome back embroidery and quilting expert Eileen Roche, who will show you how to double the use of your embroidery machine.

Watch as Eileen shares the magic in quilting on part two of Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons on this brand new Sewing With Nancy series. If you missed part one, last week, you can always watch it online at NancyZieman.com.

Quilted Shapes

Embroidery isn’t limited to a design created by thread-dense stitches. Swirls or geometric shapes can also be embroidered. For example, the squares, circles, and hexagons as featured in Eileen’s sampler pillow, can easily be quilted with an embroidery machine. The end result is the appearance of stitching that was done by hand or with a long-arm quilting machine.

Use the DIME (Designs in Machine Embroidery) template to align shapes under the embroidery machine. See how on today’s new episode of Sewing With Nancy.

Select a design to fit the shape and let your embroidery machine do the work of a computerized longarm. You’ll be amazed with the simplicity and thrilled with the results.

All-Over Quilting Designs

If you’ve pieced a quilt top but have never taken the time to quilt all the layers together, Eileen’s all-over quilting with an embroidery machine technique is for you. The quilt sandwich is hooped section by section. Templates are used for perfect placement and then the stitching begins with the touch of a button.

Start by drawing a grid over the quilt top using a water-soluble pen. Eileen and I demonstrate how easy it is to quilt in-the-hoop: one shape at a time, one row at a time. We then nestle the subsequent row, stitch, and finish. Watch all the steps to finishing this quilt on Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons—Part Two.

Continuous Line Quilting

If you’re a quilter first, embroiderer second, you no-doubt appreciate the look of quilts that have been stitched with a continuous design. If your machine has an embroidery unit, you can accomplish the same look that is generally reserved for long-arm quilters. It’s rather magical.

  • Use templates to determine placement within the hoop. Eileen shares how on today’s Sewing With Nancy episode.

I have been practicing with my machine some but very little. I really love using the embroidery machine and it has a lot of uses other than embroidery.

Quilting with machine is a bit intimidating, especially when one has spent so much time and effort in the actual making of the quilt, and no one likes to make mistakes. You do such a good job with your presentations and instructions that it does help to build confidence with new techniques. I would love to have a copy of your book.

I am an embroiderer that has always pretty much shunned quilting but now, for some reason I do not understand, am becoming interested. I signed up for your block of the month for 2017 (but haven’t started yet-too many projects, so little time). This quilting on the embroidery machine seems very timely for me. I am intrigued. I even have the free motion kit for my BL Alliance but haven’t opened the box yet!

I am a fairly new quilter and have a Baby Lock Ellageo e2, which is an embroidery machine phased out, so I don’t have much help from the dealer, but I watch your TV series and get a lot of helpful ideas, so I think this series and kit is just the thing for me. I have 10 grandchildren I am making quilts for and want to do everything myself, so I have been hesitant to finish it with the quilting. Thanks, Nancy

I am a 72 year old quilter. I have a Ellure els Babyloc embroidery machine that I got about 10 years ago. Of course I have made Baby blankets etc. with embroidery designs om over the years. I have also pieced and quilted quilts on this machine. I just started to free motion quilts and have made a super king, a queen and am working on another queen. I love fabrics and working with it. This series has piqued my interest in using my embroidery pattern for my machine to try this for a large quilt I did a baby quilt for a friend when I first got the machine but haven’t thought to do another one because of the weight and size. I would love to have thus book and dvd for my new learning curve. Thank you for the new knowledge.

I have a lap quilt I’m making for a very special friend turning 90 years old this year. It is ready to quilt and I have been studying ways to do this in my new and first embroidery machine. I am convinced I will finally enjoy quilting all my own quilts with this method and can’t wait to use it this very special quilt to celebrate my friend!

What a great lesson in using an embroidery machine to quilt! I have completed two quilts this way, and yes, I had to do a lot of hooping, but it was well worth it. When I quilted the second one, I used a magnetic hoop, and I would recommend getting one if possible because , as Nancy showed, you just move and reposition the quilt without having to remove the hoop from the machine. I know that I will use some of the ideas in this lesson to finish my next quilt.

I wondered how well this quilting technique would hold up to repeated washings? I would love to try it on a baby quilt, but I’m not sure how well the knots at each start and stop point would hold up. Does anyone have experience with this?
    Thank you
