Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons by Nancy Zieman and Eileen Roche on Sewing With Nancy

The art of quilting often combines techniques. Traditional quilts are frequently appliquéd, then pieced, and finally all the layers are quilted. If you have an embroidery machine, you can streamline the processes with the touch of a button—the brainchild of my guest Eileen Roche. The quilting technique is practically hands free! Watch as Eileen shares the magic in quilting on part-one of Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons on this brand new Sewing With Nancy series.

Easily learn the machine embroidery quilting process. There’s no reason to be intimidated. This easy process is presented from a beginner’s perspective and is broken down into eight easy lessons, including many useful tips and techniques for professional results, which are all included in this machine embroidery starter kit.

Quilt With An Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons by Eileen Roche as Seen on Sewing With Nancy with Nancy Zieman

The kit includes:

  • Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons book
  • Quilt with an Embroidery Machine DVD
  • Wonder Under
  • Quilting Needles 80/12 and 90/14
  • Print & Stick Target Paper

A machine that’s commonly used to create embroidery designs, is equally a quilting machine. Let’s start with a simple table topper, which features what at first glance is a complicated appliqué. You’ll soon see that the process is perfect for the novice quilter.

Prepare Quilt Sandwich

Like any method of quilting, we first must prepare a quilt sandwich. The quilt sandwich refers to the top, batting, and backing layers of the project. Eileen will show us how easy it is to prepare your sandwich for in-the-hoop quilting on today’s new episode.

Embroidered Appliqué Designs

In the traditional appliquéd quilt process, you’ll create your project using these steps (in order):

    1. Appliqué
    2. Piece
    3. Quilt
In today’s Sewing With Nancy featured program, Eileen shares the embroidered appliqué quilt process and explains how the steps are similar to traditional quilting, yet are executed quite differently. It’s easy once you watch Eileen’s methods on Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons Part One.

Size and Variety

On the design CD included in the new Quilt with an Embroidery Machine in 8 Easy Lessons book, you’ll have the option to create projects in a variety of sizes including 6″, 7″, or 8″ quilt blocks. Choose a size that best suits your project dimensions.

Piecing Techniques

The next step is to join the quilted blocks. Eileen walks us through this process with ease! Here’s a sneak preview. See the complete piecing demonstration on Sewing With Nancy.

I have bought one of Nancy’s Books and CD to make a quilt and it is wondeerful. The directions and photos make it very easy for a sewer to follow and complete a project. I would love the win the “Quilt with an Embroidery Machine” book and CD. My present machine does both sewing and embroidery and I am still learning just how it works. This series and the accompaning bookCD are just what I need to progress in my quilting journey.

I watched your show on embroidery applique and am inspired to do the applique and quilting in the hoop! Applique has been the “A” word to me! I would love to win this book!

This is a wonderful way to use the embroidery machine for quilts! I have done a few things this way, and I’m hooked.

This example of quilting with the embroidery machine is so well done that being a beginner it is very easy to understand. It makes you feel you could do this successfully.

I have a embroidery machine but I’m too intimidated to try it out. I’ve never done it before and scared to mess something up or tear up the machine. Will this give me the confidence to at least try it?

I’ve been sewing and quilting for a number of years. At the age of 80, my shoulders and hands are problematic enough that I can no longer sew by hand for long stretches of time, nor maneuver the weight of even a baby quilt in order to do the quilting. With this method I could do a queen size quilt again. Thank you for the opportunity.

Quilting with an embroidery machine is something I would love to know more about. I do a lot of quilt, but adding the embroidery to my quilting would be super!!!

Another innovative Idea. Between Eileen and you Nancy you make sewing and embroidery an inspiration to try something that gives you confidence and success with the procedures that you walk us through and say “you can do this”. Thanks so much for this new design.

I love the pin cushion idea. Is there any chance that you can format this in SHV format. I have an old Viking Designer 1 floppy. I have to have all patterns in the SHV format so I can load them on my machine.

I hope I am in the correct conversation.

    Thank you Gina

Nancy, Thank you sooooo much for your reply. I have followed your instructions and I am waiting for a return call. I watched on of your shows that showed a pin cushions pieced and quilting using the embroidery machine. I do not remember the episode name. It showed a needle with thread stitched on the front. The piecing was done in the hoop. Can you advise the name. I would like to order the program. Thank you Gina

What patterns are you using for the continuous stippling. I find patterns for stippling blocks but cannot find even the one you used in lesson two for embroidery machine quilting.
