Seams Unlikely, autobiography by Nancy ZiemanIt ended up being a watershed day when I keyed  “Nancy Zieman” into the Google search box. The terms “Nancy Zieman face,” “Nancy Zieman stroke,” and “Nancy Zieman smile” instantly popped up. My first reaction was embarrassment. Then I thought, “What—not a mention of sewing or quilting!”

That casual search caused me to pause, think, and realize that all of you watching Sewing With Nancy or paging through a Nancy’s Notions catalog had good reason to wonder why my face is not symmetrical. After all, it’s something I can’t hide!

What happens to us does not define us unless we let it.

Okay, I admit, writing an autobiography might appear like a rather pompous project. But all is not what it seems or seams as in this case!

My reason for writing is this: Each of us faces challenges. Some are larger than others. But what happens to us does not define us unless we let it. If this book can help others gain confidence in the face of challenge, that will bring me great joy.

Read a sample chapter online or view the video

I’ve written a lot of books, but this is the first book without a single sewing or quilting tip or technique. To read a sample chapter, visit SeamsUnlikey.com and click on “The Book”.

I am generally a private person, but . . .

… once deciding to write an autobiography, I had to tell the story. (I liken it to wearing a skimpy swimsuit on a crowded beach when you have no business wearing a bikini. Gulp.) Here are a few images from the book and topics that are covered.

  • I grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. Bell’s palsy hit early, when I was 14 months old.

  • 4-H played an important part of my life. That’s me hiding in the back row. Beth, Valerie, Vicki, Peggy, and I were all wearing the jumpers and blouses we made in the second year of 4-H.

  • Facial issues were not my only physical challenge. That was a long, hot summer in leg casts.

  • I started Nancy’s Notions literally from the kitchen table. (Obviously my outfit that day was less than coordinated!)

  • Our first warehouse was once a chicken house!

  • As the business grew, more family members became involved. (My father-in-law Earl, and our son Ted, moving into a new warehouse.)

  • Eventually, Nancy’s Notions home grew to this!

  • Sewing With Nancy had equally humble beginnings. Early TV shows were economically produced. It appears we didn’t use the vacuum cleaner very often. Those are tape spike marks that show the placement for the demonstration table. The studio was so small that we had to reset the studio between videotaping table and sewing machine segments.

  • Now its lights, camera, and sewing action!

  • As Sewing With Nancy and our business grew, so did our family. This photo was taken on “Gotcha” Day, or the day Tommy, our youngest son, arrived in our lives.

  • Our family has grown!

Nancy, you have always been an inspiration to me. I grew up watching you with my mother, whom also adored you and was quite the seamstress herself! Every Saturday morning would be spent cuddled on the couch watching, learning, and shushing anyone who dared speak over our television! She has now passed, but I carry on the tradition of watching and learning (and shushing!) with my daughter. You are a beautiful person, inside and out! Thank you for sharing your talent and gifts with the world and not letting your challenges, or the world, define you! You, my dear, are an Overcomer! 1 John 4:4, 1 John 5:4-5

I’m glad that you finally wrote about yourself. I first watched you in our local PBS station, KHET, and just admired you for being so calm, organized and deliberate. I have always admired women who have become so successful, not just in business, but in many facets of their lives – I applaud you in more ways than you can imagine. I’ve been retired for 11 years taking on the sewing I stopped after getting married, working full time and raising a family. So now I should have no problem restarting? Well, actually I do sew in fits and starts. I look forward to reading more about you so I can get inspired, organized, and sew like I did as a teenager!

I was already so moved by the story of a woman who faced such challenges. Then I saw the picture of you in casts and just about lost it! I am even more impressed by your fortitude, evidently there for many, many years. Nancy, you didn’t just adjust and overcome, you totally excelled and conquered! I pray that your story will give others courage. A fan for so, so long…

I remember the excitement I felt when first discovered Sewing with Nancy on my local PBS station. It was probably the first show, or at least the first season. I learned so much from your experiences about fitting clothes to my body rather than pattern companies’ ideals. I have broad shoulders and back then, an abundant bust. My clothes always fit wonderfully after I started watching & using your techniques.

I remember when Tommy came into your family.

I still watch every Sunday after church. And now I DVR instead of video tape. Please keep it up. And I’ll keep sewing with Nancy.

I learned to sew literally at my grandmother’s knee. I would kneel next to her when she used her treadle machine….I so wanted to be able to reach that treadle with my own feet. I have always felt you took over my training to help fine tune what my grandmother taught me…thank you so much for so many years of educating us!!! I would love a copy of your book to add to my bookcase in my sewing room.

    February 4, 2014

I have been watching Sewing with Nancy since I was wee. My mother sewed and she loved to get inspiration from the show. Even as a young-ling I was crafty and I would watch with her not really understanding what she was doing, or how sewing construction really worked.

I am now 30, I am still only a beginner but I love it. I am not very good, but I love it. I record Sewing with Nancy every Saturday and keep the episodes on the DVR that I need to come back to. We are getting ready to move this year and I am working on making sure I re-watch every episode lovingly recorded (my mom also used to record them on VHS) and write down in my sewing journal the reason/reasons I saved them over the last few years.

Nancy has been an inspiration for 2 generations of women in my family and now I have introduced her to my daughter in law who is also an avid sewer.

Thank you for sharing your expertise on PBS for so many years. I hope you will continue to do so as so many others have left PBS for other venues. I’ve watched you for years, record and now DVR your shows, and get your catalog and books. You’ve been an inspiration to so many by your sewing and now your life!
Hope you have many more years of success!

I never fully knew that it was Bells Palsy that affected your life but I went with that thought when a co-worker had it and he was embarrassed by his now prominent droop. He had become severely depressed. I told him about your show and he watched it out of curiosity. That one show that he watched, having absolutely no interest in sewing, gave him the courage to carry on with his life.
Thank you for being so brave. You have no idea the ways in which you have affected the lives of some people.

We humans are curious creatures, and that is a good thing. Without our curiosity, we’d be so stale! So I admit to having been curious enough about your appearance to google you. And I also admit to feeling nothing but admiration for you for not letting such a small thing as a crooked smile stop you from turning into one of the best sewing coaches anywhere! You go, girl! February 4, 2014

    Nancy,
I just wanted to say that I have been watching your show for many years, any time I lived in an area where PBS aired it and my work allowed me to be home. Then after the advent of VCRs, I could watch in the evening. It has always been my favorite.

Whenever I have been in a classroom or seminar and am asked who is a woman I admire, I always say your name. Growing up with a mother with a port wine birthmark covering half of her face, I know how hurtful people can be with their comments, sometimes unintentionally. It must have taken a great deal of courage for you to become such a public figure, teaching and then appearing on TV., instead of retreating from the limelight. So many people would have said, No, I can’t appear in front of the camera.” Your courage has brought so much into the lives of your fans. Thank you.

Thank you Mrs. Nancy, for being the inspiration for me to learn sewing skills and not be afraid to try something different. After years of watching you, I realize that anything you desire to learn is possible to achieve. New skills and techniques may require several attempts to get it “right”, but even Edison made many attempts at inventing the light bulb. It is through the process where you are blessed, not just the knowledge, but the personal gratification of accomplishment. No one can ever give or take this from you. It is a force of inner strength that develops the soul as well and the mind. It has made me who I am today and continues to drive me to further learn and explore new avenues of sewing and creativity.

    Nancy,

As someone who has a disability and am aware of the stares and the embarrassement that goes with it, I understand. I’m very proud of you for writing this book…good for you! Love watching your quilting and sewing, keep up the good work!

Thank you for your inspiring story. You have really come a long way. When I can find you on PBS here in NC, I watch you. Have always enjoyed your programs. I will look forward to reading your book, if I win and if I don’t, I’ll just buy it.

  • Marianne
    February 4, 2014

At first viewing I “wondered” about your facial features, but thereafter never “noticed”…. only interested in what was in your hands and what you had to say. Therefore…..

I don’t see your B/P’s effects as a “handicap”, just a first momentary observation that I don’t “see” any more, so keep on sewing and teaching!

  • Alice

We wish we had been able to attend the book launch event in Madison. Would you consider a trip to Chicago? I am a self-taught sewer who has a lot to learn. Thank you for being there for me and my husband who is a new sewer. We laugh that he will be on Project Runway one day (not!). That you for all you do. We look forward to reading your book.

  • Nancy

I have watched and learned from your tv show and books for a long time, it is my favorite show to watch over again on the Roku. Your encouragement and the way to help others through sewing often speaks to me. Thank you for having the courage to pursue your dream and encourage me in mine.

Nancy, thank you for writing your autobiography. I have long admired you for doing your show regardless of your Bells palsey. What an encouraging example to those of us who also suffer with physical problems. The theme of your book sounds wonderful, and I can’t wait to read it!

My cousin and dear friend also deals with the aftermath of Bell’s Palsy. While she did not contract it until she was a teenager, the reality was devastating to her self-esteem. It could not have happened at a more vulnerable time. Your example, and your success has brought her immeasurable comfort over the years. Thank you for your book, and your willingness to talk about your challenges in life. We all have some “flaw” in our lives, but not all of us have to live with it being displayed to the world. God bless you for your candor and willingness to “set the record straight.”

Ah, Nancy, I’m so happy you have an autobiography. I’m sure there will be funny reads, emotional reads, and just a plain good read. You have went down an interesting path in your life. I’m a mom of a Korean adoptive, so of course I’m interested in your sharing some portion of Tommy’s entry and life with him and Ted. Applause to you for sharing this private life of yours. Thank you.

I have followed your career from the beginning, and was fortunate to meet you at the Puyallup Sewing Expo many years ago. I always felt a common bond, I too have a degree in Home Economics, Textiles and Business, and admired the way you wove a career from your love of sewing and the growth of a business that emerged from that love. Congratulations on the new book, I look forward to reading it.

Like so many others listed here, I have watched you since the 1980’s. You gave wonderfully clear instructions and I would write down anything I wanted to remember. Now I DVR your show (it airs at 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday) and watch it faithfully. The funny thing is that my husband loves to watch it with me. His hobby is wood working and he has seen so many parallels between sewing and wood working. We both loved the 25th anniversary show, with all the old clips. Oh, and I watch his Wood Shop program with him!

I am sitting here with tears running down my face.

I watched your show for years and learned so much from you. I still have my “Sewing with Nancy” booklets safely filed away, and I still receive (and use!) “Nancy’s Notions”. As I work, I talk to you! And I’ll bet lots of others do too. I almost feel like I have a friend there with me, as indeed I do.
I did not know the particulars of the cross you bear but I did/do appreciate the grace with which you live your life. You absolutely helped me when I was given something extra to bear(Parkinsons) and I can’t thank you enough. God bless you and your family for all you do. I would love to read your book. Again, God bless and keep you. Ruth

Love your promotion of adoption, and seeing pictures of your beautiful family. THis weekend, I was babysitting my 4 month old granddaughter and she and I watched Sewing with Nancy together. Claire even started crying when it was over, so we had to watch it again. Smart little girl.

    Hello Nancy!

I am so thrilled that you wrote a book about yourself, finally. So many of us feel like we’ve “grown” up with you. I’ve watched you from the very early shows and have learned so much from you, even though I am an experienced sewer. I’ve seen your family grow, as you have become part of my family. They knew when your shows were on (in the early days), not to “mess with mom”. Then I was able to put your shows on VHS to watch whenever I wanted. Boy, was that terrific. I own all your books and now watch you on my computer, and we’ve gone through lots of innovations and technology together. Thank you for all you’ve done and I’m so looking forward to your book!

Nancy, I am so looking forward to reading your book! I learned to sew on my mother’s treadle, and she taught me to sew at a young age…I wasn’t in school yet.. my dresses, that my mother made for me, also had matching doll dresses..smocking and all.
I have followed you since the beginning…watched as you did alterations. And, have actually been able to use that information from time to time, and made a lot of my children’s clothes when they were young. Now, I do machine embroidery and am learning quilting. And, you are one of my mainstays 🙂
    Congratulation on the book!

Thank you, Mrs. Nancy, for your many years of inspiration and dedication to teaching America the art and craft of sewing. You’ve taught folks that even beginners can make beautiful fashions that look and fit professionally. Through watching your shows, I have not only honed my sewing skills by learning new techniques, but I’ve also gained the confidence that I can make anything that I desire. With practice and determination (even Edison had many tries before he invented the final light bulb), I have the confidence to attempt and complete all kinds of projects. This is pure gratification of the mind and soul. Not every teacher has this gift as you have. This comes from your inspiration and life experiences, I pray you have many more years of teaching. May God bless you!

I have been watching SWN all of my life it seems and I enjoy each episode. I have learned so many things over the years and continue to learn things each Saturday when I tune it to her program. Nancy, Thank you for freely sharing the first parts of your book. Your “voice” seems to be a true reflection of yourself–sharing the love and strength of your family and community.

I will not be waiting to win a copy of your book, but will be buying it today. Thank you for sharing your life, your sewing knowledge (which has helped me keep up with sewing’s changes through the years of rearing my own babies and my employment) and your strength of character as you have evidenced in your shows throughout our lives.

Honestly, I have such high regard for the positive influences you have on women that I risk sounding frivolous. Thank you Nancy, for all your good examples. God bless, J.

Looking forward to reading the book and don’t care if I will be purchasing rather than winning – have watched Nancy for years! Even though sometimes would never try to do some of the things, am inspired. Enjoy the variety of the segments. If I remember correctly it’s been 35 years on PBS.

I’ve watched your show for many years whenever I could. Now I’m retired, I watch 3 times a week. 🙂 I catch whatever I missed on line. I never thought I would like quilting. But, you made it look so easy. I tried it a couple years ago and now I love it. Before I finish one, I have the next one planned in my head. Makes my retirement that much more enjoyable.
    Thank you Nancy!

I watch your show on PBS every Saturday and have used many of your great resources throughout the years. Can’t wait to read your autobiography. Congratulations on your super career!

I actually got to peek inside a copy of this book yesterday when one woman brought her copy to our sewing group. It fascinated me to hear your story and would love to have a copy of this book. My husband recently had an episode of Bell’s Palsy and although he’s almost 100% recovered it was a very difficult time for him to deal with the paralysis not knowing the outcome. I applaud you on your bravery to face this your entire life; handling it with such grace. Thanks for the glimpse at your life…I look forward to reading the book.

Nancy, I am so thrilled that you decided to write this book. I can’t wait to read it. I’m certain it will be inspiring to me. You posted my landscape quilt twice “Healing Through Quilting”… the quilt inspired by the loss of my son. Nancy, Richie also came to me through the blessed event of adoption! I am double thrilled that some of your proceeds will go towards adoption. We have more in common than I originally thought… I am excited to read this book. I’m wondering if it’s in e-book form through my Nook. I’m going to find out now! Best of luck in all your endeavors! You are always an inspiration to me.

My sewing experience grew up with you, Nancy. We always had the current issue of Nancy’s Notions catalog. Then when I found that our PBS channel was airing your program I was an “regular” viewer. I believe you would be totally amazed by the number of women and probably some men you have inspired. Thank you for making the most of your talents so we could make the most of ours. God bless you!

Sewing allowed me to work from home while my children were growing. We were a 4-H family also and I taught sewing and tailoring to many students. I got into quilting with a group of friends to have something to do when I retired. Your have been teaching me for many years! When I miss on TV, I follow up online now. Thank you for sharing with us all these years! BTW, you are a beautiful person, inside and out with your patience and kindness. Thanks for writing the book!

Like those who have commented before me, I am thrilled that you decided to write this book. I’ve often wondered about your story and admired you for being willing to be used to be such a blessing to others. Best wishes for this endeavor, which is already a success…not because of how many people will read it, but because of the fact you were willing to write it and share your story. Thanks for being you.

Your show was the highlight of my days when I lived in Canada; we came back to Belgium, our home country, in 1993. I can’t watch PBS from here. Thanks to the web, distances don’t prevent people from keeping in touch. My daughter had cancer at age 14 and like you, she decided to fight and never give up; she is now 27, has a degree, a brand new job and is happy. This book is certainly an excellent idea as some people I am sure might have doubts when confronted with health or other serious issues. You are a great example of humanity and generosity.

I have been a fan of yours since the early years of your show. I was fortunate enough to attend a retreat you held in the Seattle area many years ago. I look forward to many more years of Sewing With Nancy.

I took sewing in high school, and was told by my teacher that I had to drop sewing and take cooking because I had absolutely NO aptitude for sewing.

I went on to college without touching a needle until after graduation when I was caught handling the fabrics that were out in the mall. The clerk said “anyone who handles fabric like that is a “sewer wanting to come out…I’ll help you”. I took every class she had and I’ve been sewing every since.

Once you tv series started I have not missed a single episode. Thanks for all the help.

I have ordered from you for years and have been a loyal watcher every Saturday for 8 years and now cannot change tv cable companies because Charter does not carry your show. I get it on PBS from South Carolina. I admire your courage as I had a friend who had Bell’s Palsy and she was in a lot of pain and got very agitated because of it. You are my hero and I have learned so much from you and hope your tour comes near me so I can tell you this in person. I so look forward to your show and also repeat watch on my iPad and laptop. I am learning to quilt and appreciate your instruction. I ordered from you in your early days and found an old order form the other day. Brought back memories. I am retired now and have time to work with projects. I love your DVDs. Just like being there almost. Bless you and keep the info coming. I so want your book. As I always say “blue skies and palomino ponies” to you, which is my very best thoughts. I am looking forward to 30 more years of Sewing with Nancy and Nancy’s Notions. I hope, I hope I am lucky this time.

Nancy, I know I am not the only one with tears running down. You have walked me through years of sewing as I have tried to make sense out of a world holding little of it. The work of my hands helped me help myself while I eased the workload of the young ones. For all of it, I thank you. You cannot begin to know the far shores your ripples reached when you through yourself into the ocean. Bless you love, bless you.

Thank you Nancy Zieman, for the total enjoyment which you have given to me over the years! You have spurred me on to many projects. I had always wondered whether you had been a victim of Bells Palsy because my father had been a victim of it. He, as you, achieved great things in his life as a pastor and preacher. Then when I was struck with Lupus, part of my healing was learning the patience which you exhibited on your tv shows. Yours was with making clear concise examples. Mine, of necessity, was learning patience with my disease and making room for it so that I could again become a productive member of society. I love sewing and it was through this rather circuitous route that you are “my friend.”

I need to hear abut your challenges.. and hope I win. My adult daughter (40) has terminal breast cancer, and we have crafted together over the years. She has so many wants that I cannot provide (her bucket list includes a garage for her husband so he can work on the side after she dies to make extra $$, or he will lose the little house they have; and she wants to go with the whole family to Disney one last time). But, the quilts I create, with your constant companionship on TV, while she struggles.. will retain her memory forever. This is so hard.. but every little stitch has her love built right in!

I have watched your shows what seems like forever. I have learned so much from you. My mother was a seamstress but I couldn’t learn from her. I have been a follower of your show for many years and a frequent shopper as well. When I saw at Nancy’s Notions that the book was available for purchase, I bought it immediately and was thrilled when it came. I could not put it down and could not believe how much we “have in common” although I am more from your Mother’s generation. I have a daughter born in 1953 like you, married again in 1977, grew up on a Minnesota farm, my favorite store was Minnesota Fabrics where I practically lived at and even shared your favorite music!! The read was so fantastic , sometimes it felt like it was my life I was so mesmerized. I learned on a treadle from a wonderfully talented Mother and sewing has been my life long passion. I like to try new things and your show, techniques, patterns and expertise have been my life long “companion”. I am widowed now and 84 yrs old but have been blessed with good eyesight and I am still sewing, kids & grandkids still asking for my creations! Expecting the arrival of my first great grand child so I surely won’t run out of projects. Family always gives me gift certificates to Nancy’s Notions for Christmas and this year I made a nice big dent in my “wish list”. When I get your catalogs I almost memorize them so that list gets pretty long sometimes!
You have been like a good friend to me over so many years for which I am so grateful. I am so happy for your success and you are an inspiration to the world. The one thing in your book that brought out the tears was when you quoted Proverbs “In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths”. That was my Mothers favorite and she had a placque that always hung on the wall, now it hangs in my home as a permanent reminder of her and the philosophy she taught me. So yes, your book gave me goose bumps!!! Thank You for writing it and God Bless You my dear! All your books are excellent, this is your masterpiece!

My mother always said “cannot never did anything” and this inspired me to achieve in life. You are an inspiration for all, especially young people who may feel bullied! As a life long sewer, I retired and found my passion in quilting. As my e-mail indicated, I earned a pilot’s license after my husband died suddenly at age 48. That “can do” attitude lives on! You and your shows are an inspiration. May God bless you to continue your work for years to come!

I’ve learned SO much from Sewing With Nancy over the years and have shopped from Nancy’s Notions numerous times. I learned to sew from my sweet Mom and still have my first little doll quilt that I made when I was six! Thank goodness my quilts have come a long way since then! I never miss an episode of your TV show or your blog, and am now anxious to read your book. Keep up the great work!

Nancy, I finished your delightful biography on Super Bowl Sunday. Your strength and kindness has helped me many times in my life when I attended Sewing With Nancy Weekend and through watching your sewing programs. I will share your book with our daughter, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, great-granddaughter and sister. I recommended your book to my sewing group friends yesterday and will pass your book on to my daughter next. Thank you P.S. I will be trying some of your recipes soon!

I purchased Nancy’s book recently and after reading it, and being quite inspired, I knew I would love to share it with others! Trouble is I want to keep my signed copy to review again. If I won a copy I would love to share it with the many sewing ladies I know. A great book with a great purpose, Nancy! Thanks!

I found you on PBS and have enjoyed my Sat. mornings with Nancy. You inspire me each week. I’m 82 and feel like I have more to give with all the talents the Lord has given me. I also grew up on a dairy farm in the Black Hills many yrs. ago with a mother that could look at the catalog and make our clothes for the new school yr. In the last yrs many of my friends have quit sewing and gave me all their stash. Everything is at my fingertips to fabricate my wishes. I keep thinking it would be wonderful to teach young ones the joy and contentment of sewing. Thank you!

Thank you for writing an autobiography. I would assume that many people like me have watched you over the years, bought many of your books and wondered if you had Bells Palsy. Let me say that that thought did not interfere with the wonderful lessons learned from your expertise in sewing. Keep on “trucking”. Thanks for sharing. Would love to win a copy of your book.

I have been a Sewing With Nancy fan since the 80’s and thought I’d just send a “Thank You” to you, Nancy, for your continuing teaching and giving inspiration over the years. Also I’d like to add that I have found the courage to join a quilting group last month and have completed my first quilt block! Your shows have given me the determination to complete many more. Thank You!

I can tell what a strong woman you are. I would love to read about you and your family.
I have had your show on record for months. I learn so much, and there is so much to learn.
So fun to watch you and your guests.
I love the new pad for the embroidery hoops. I hope to purchase this in the near future.
I used to work at a quilt store in Florida, and you get to know the women that come in to either add to their stash, or just to start a new project, and they leave the store so happy.
That is how I see you in all you do. A very happy woman, and I am so inspired by you.
Thanks to you for making my day by watching your show.

I began sewing on my mother’s treadle Singer following the lines on notebook paper when I was very young. Miss Rast taught me a great deal in Home Ec, but through the years I have learned as much or more from following Nancy as both of taught me. Thanks for allowing us to share your life. Anticipate reading the book from cover to cover.

I bought your book before it was released and I thought it was outstanding. Not only about the trials you overcame and the wonderful relationship you had with your family but also how you answered so many of the questions I had about your business. Some day I am going to write a letter to you to tell you about all the ways our lives were similar, even though I am 12 years older than you. But my sewing life has been much different from yours. If it hadn’t been for you, your TV show and your catalog, I wouldn’t be doing the sewing I do now. Sewing kept my 3 little girls and 6 grand-children in clothes (from panties to wedding dresses), gave me a way to make extra income when I had to retire and gave me a reason to keep going when I suffered kidney failure, dialysis and a kidney transplant. You are one of my all-time favorite people. Thank you!

I was at Stout State University (now called UW-Stout, Menomonie) from 1969 through 1972. I moved to Madison, WI after that and sewing was a enjoyable avocation for me. Over time your Sewing With Nancy program was broadcast on WI Public Television and that’s when I became aware of your skills for teaching and inspiring others to sew. It was years later when I discovered you also attended Stout during the time I was there. It made me wonder if we had any of the same classes? Just before you were famous! Do you remember all the rules and regulations for girls in the dorm in those days? And only one telephone for an entire section of residents!
In 1986 we adopted our son from the Philippines. And now I know that your family has also been blessed with an adopted son. Nancy, I feel like I have shadowed you without knowing it.
Thanks for all you do! I think your success Seams Very Likely!

Enjoy watching your show. A note to the 84 year old who was still sewing for her grandchildren and great grand children, my mother-in-law only gave up sewing when she was 98 and could no longer easily thread the machine. She is now over 104 and can still tell stories, but I now mend her clothes when necessary.

    Hi Nancy,
I want to buy your book, but I would love to have it signed for me. I was at the Quilt Expo in Sept. 2013 and I was waiting in line to meet you and sign the book, but I also have a disability and was unable to stand too long and my friend had my wheelchair and I couldn’t find her so I had to get out of line and get my wheelchair, by then the line was so long, I just sat and watched you sign.
I watch all your shows and buy lots of things from Nancy’s Notions. You have inspired me to sew and I have learned so much from you, thank you.
If there is a way to get a signed book please let me know, I would be thrilled to buy a copy.
    Sincerely,

Nancy – Your life – your inspiration — and how you inspired and “rescued” me………….have taped and watched your shows on PBS “forever”……….however, right before Christmas I finally made a decision to tackle a much dreaded task…………I had put off for TEN YEARS –I was challenged with 50 Dresden plate circles made by my boyfriends mother back in the 50’s………..that were something less than perfect in their size and assembly!! I plowed my way through “turning under” and sewing down the raw edges — accomplished nine of those “masterpieces” and set them on 18 1/2 inch blocks and managed to make a beautiful couch throw. However, I promised to make four more for his children — and thought I’ll never get this done!!! And, then — NANCY TO THE RESCUE!!!!! I watched her shows on “Sewing The Grand Dresden Quilts” — and, yes, I cried with JOY!!! I had no idea that the answer was so simple – using fusible lightweight lining to turn those raw edges into finished circles!! And, thank you, Nancy, I’m proud to say I have now completed all those circles with your magic method — and am moving on with those circles onto their 18-1/2″ foundations — and the family heirloom throws will be sent to Indiana to the four children with much love and a gracious heart to Nancy to give me the courage and inspiration to get them done!! And, now the bonus is — I’ll have time to read Nancy’s book – that I’d be so honored to receive. The obstacles she has tackled and overcome is indeed an “ahhh-haaa” moment for me to absorb and appreciate. Thank You Nancy.

Thank you, Nancy, for sharing your story in your book. After watching your series for several years, mostly the quilting episodes, I want to thank you for sharing all those quilting and sewing tips. I especially enjoy the segment at the end with your special guests.

Tried to get the video of you and your friend doing the “cooking” segment, but they ran out. So funny – hope they show it again one day.

Wow – What I like best about the story so far is the fact that you faced your discomfort about viewers curiosity and went far outside your comfort zone to share some of your most private thoughts so that others could also be inspired. Awesome accomplishment! Very courageous undertaking. Thank you.

I want the blog for support and also to share tips on how someone with say rheumatoid arthritis can quilt with more ease. I hope to win a copy and be inspired, We cant think of a name. The other bloggers are already published and have a lot on their plates, but we want to do this. I love bio’s , I am sure I would love yours.

I have been watching sewing with Nancy since the beginning! I think I have every book, video and have spent lots of time purchasing notions and other items from your store. I learned so much watching the PBS shows in the beginning and ended up starting an embroidery business with all I learned from you, Nancy. I have always been inspired by you, and even though my business will never be the size yours is, and I will never accomplish as much as you, I think I saw in you a determination and drive that I have tried to channel when you have those days in your business that make you wonder “why am I doing this”. When machines break down and you have orders that need to be shipped and customers at your throat – if Nancy can do it, so can I. Thank you for all you have done for sewers, embroiderer’s and women – God Bless you and yours!

Countless enjoyable hours have been spent designing, planning and sewing and more often than not, with the aid of Nancy. Through your books, CD’s and DVD’s, I have tried to come close to perfecting my projects. It was as if Nancy was by my side, guiding me through another project. One of my favorite techniques that I have used over and over again, is the “two seam fly-front zipper.” Not only did I use this on my own pants, but also on my husbands with minor adjustments. It worked every time. Not always able to find pants for a 6’5″ guy, prompted me to give pant making a try for him. Nancy you are an inspiration and so talented. I would thoroughly enjoy receiving a copy of your new book, “Seams Unlikely”. Thank you for all the “tips” through the years.

I recall watching your shows when my daughter, now 30, was an infant. Fast forward — I recently retired and was delighted to find you on WUSF! Your show is part of imy daily routine now. Even if the subject is something I’m not necessarily interested in I still manage to pick up great tips. Seeing your story ( on your anniversary show) brought me back to a day in 1972 when I was about to graduate from UW Madison with a degree in English but was sitting with two motherly co-workers outside the medical school library where I worked having a conversation about how I wished I had pursued home ec instead. Well look out world, Nancy you have inspired me to take the next thirty years by the horns and do some awesome sewing, be it for myself or others. I especially enjoy your Nancy’s corner guests who also show us what an inspiration you are. Can’t wait to read your book!

Thank you for your time and wonderful shows.

When I discovered your show, I was so happy to find something for us, women who love to sew, but really didn’t have access to advice of Mothers and others in their life. The shows still provides the inspiration to try one more thing and save a frustrating moment when things don’t work as you think they should!
I remember back and most of my friends would look at me and say, you do what, why when you can buy it cheaper … the list goes on. But I learned there are many in our fold like me, and it was a connection that still validates and lets me express my creativity and my love of the art. Thanks for bringing us our inspiration through yours.

    February 5, 2014

You have been part of my life for a long time. You are an inspiration for sure. The picture of you as a little girl holding a kitty with saddle shoes could have been a picture of myself in rural northern Wisconsin. With my mom being a terrific seamstress, 4-H plus a great home economics teacher, I grew up sewing. We have much in common as I also have had bells palsy since birth, but there is no need to feel sorry for yourself. I was lucky to marry a wonderful man that could see the real me. I worked as a high school secretary and worked with kids and parents for 41 years before I retired. Until I read about you on Pat Sloans blog I was not aware that you also had bells palsey. I have since lost my husband and retired so I spend time sewing, mostly quilting now. Have recorded your programs for years and have lots of wonderful purse and tote templates plus patterns that are so great. You are an inspiration and may
God bless you for helping me over the years.

I can’t remember how many years I have been watching your program, Nancy, but as soon as I knew about it I started watching and have continued to do so to this day. I love the way you present information, making it clear and easy to follow. You have presented so many interesting topics. Thank you for all you have taught us over the years. My dear mother taught me to sew, and I made my first dress when I was 11and now I am 72 and still love to sew! She was such an encouragement to me. I hope your book is a great success. I don’t see how it could miss…with all the pictures of your family, and I’m sure your book will be one which I cannot put down. Thank you so much for

I want to personally thank you for being an inspiration to me. You have taught me so much. Being from the foothills in TN, I never had the what you would call the fancy things of sewing. I always watched your TV show and dream that one day I would own my own sewing machine. I had to wait till I was married before I had my own. My first sewing machine was from Montgomery Wards back in 1986. I am so thankful for what I have today and would love to add your book to my sewing library.

I get up early (and wake up my husband) to catch your show every weekend on our local PBS station. If I oversleep and miss it, I have to go find it on the Internet to get my NZ fix. I grew up on a farm in Ohio in the 70’s, joined 4-H, and my parents gave me a sewing machine for graduation. I’ve bought several of your books over the years – you’ve been a great inspiration to me, not only your sewing tips, but also sharing stories of other sewists around the globe who do so much good through their charity work. Thanks so much for being a part of my life, and I hope your book does very well.

You know, I watched you all those years, and never noticed your lopsided smile. I liked your smile, and your easy going personality. I’m glad you’re giving a potion of the proceeds yo adoption, as both my boys were adopted. One was our Foster child from 3 months old until he was 6 and a half. He has special needs and was considered un-adoptable. We were all so happy and relieved when we went to court and became a “real” family.

I watch Nancy’s show and have ordered from her catalog! I am inspired by her determination, skills, and now this new book she has published will be a book I read! I don’t read much, unless it is a quilt book or a doll clothing book, but Nancy’s story intrigues me! It would be great to win a copy! Thank you for this opportunity!

I have had the privilege of attending one of your sewing conferences and your presentation was the highlight of the three days. Thanks for the many ideas that you have shared through the years. You have inspired many.

As I was convalescing, I spent many hours curled up in bed with my tablet while watching many of your segments via you tube. You inspire me. I can’t wait to get back to sewing and attempt so many things that I have learnt from you! I will definitely be looking for your book.

Your show was the first sewing show I ever watched on TV and Saturday mornings were set aside for you to educate me. I took the lessons from the pin and pivot series to alter a wedding dress pattern for a good friend of mine and her dress fit perfectly for her special day. I was so proud to have made that dress, which never could have happened without your great lessons. I’d love to win a copy, but even if I don’t, I’ll be searching for your book in my local bookstore. You taught me to press, to be able to sew with only minutes a day, (when I was single mom of 2 kiddos!) made sweatshirt sweaters for gifts and much much more! You, Nancy, changed my life. Thank you! I can’t wait to read this book.

I taught 4-H sewing and used many of your hints along the way. I can’t wait to read this book, thanks for writing it !

I laughed and teared up just reading this post! I have learned so much from you I can remember when your show was first available on our local PBS station in Pennsylvania on WQED. my mom, a Home Ec teacher, was thrilled to see such high quality sewing instruction on TV she was already familiar with you , Nancy. What an inspiration you have been to me! Look forward to reading this book..and recommending it to my friends!

In truth, we ALL have issues whether seen or unseen and how we do NOT let them define us is exactly what Nancy is all about!
I knew Nancy’s Notions long before seeing her smiling face. But, as an OB RN I could not help but notice what I assumed might be Bells’ palsy perhaps from childbirth. Certainly I wondered what the story was behind the smile and assumed it was only my nurse background that even noticed it.
I think it is courageous and brave to talk about your personal health and applaud your bringing your issues out to the forefront, to embolden others with conditions. It makes them feel they can do anything, as you have, and forces the public to look beyond the physical to the true woman of strength!.
I’ve always been impressed with your company, now I get to be impressed by the woman behind the company. You GO! Girl!

Your shows over the years have helped me do so many things, both new and an easier way. I was so upset when PBS no longer carried you in the Washington, DC area. I hope they change their mind and bring you back. I would be so happy. On the personal note you are such an inspiration to all. You are so gifted and talented and you share it with us.
    Thank you.

    February 6, 2014

You are a very talented lady and a great inspiration to me. I was born with a large port Wine birthmark on my face which causes some major facial deformities, then later developed MG which now affects my speech, hand/arm strength and vision. I have always dreamed of owning my own small home busn. but it seemed that I may have to be bold enough to go in front of others to promote it, and I just couldn’t bring myself to be out in public. Now I’m at the point of desperation to either get serious about a home busn. or risk being hopelessly in debt. I know that no one will hire someone that looks like me, and suffers from a chronic illness on top of it.
I would love a copy of your book, in hope that it will help motivate and inspire me to venture forth with what I love to do.

I love adoption dearly!!!!

Pat Sloan says I need to come here. One of the inspirations I got from Nancy resulted in my oldest daughter’s wedding dress. My daughter gave me a picture and said that is what she wanted. I called the store and they said $800+. I started shopping for the materials and lace and it cost me $280+. (Long way from 800). My daughter was thrilled. I forget what segment it was that inspired me but it sure saved me a lot of money.

Nancy, when I first read your blog about your new book, I thought, why does someone who is talented, sharing and inspirational have to define why they wrote a book?
I am glad you did and can’t wait to read about the one person who inspired me to stop being afraid of sewing. Now many many dresses, quilts and home décor items later, I still am amazed at your talent. Keep up the great work you are doing for so many.

I was given a quilt that had belonged to my grandmother. It is in bad shape so I wasn’t sure what to do, whether or not to try and replace some of the fabric in the stars. I sent an email to Nancy’s Notions and promptly got a response telling what would be the best thing to do with the quilt. I appreciated the prompt response and advice. I’ve always had great luck in dealing with Nancy’s Notions. Nancy, you are a great inspiration to all of us. Keep guiding along the sewing and quilting way.

Nancy is an incredible role model for all of us. She demonstrates how strong and self-confident we can all be when we let our personalities and generously shared knowledge and talents outshine our insecurities about our flaws. Whether we have weight issues, vision or hearing challenges, scars, twitches, or hair loss, we can take Nancy’s lead and let our personalities dominate and win peoples’ respect. Nancy is so awesome, and so are YOU! Learn, create, inspire, share, and be joyful for who you are.

    February 7, 2014

Many years ago, I had the opportunity to visit Nancy’s store and was hoping to meet her, but when I asked if she was there, I was told she was in a business meeting and was unavailable. I am from Pennsylvania and my husband and I were on an extended car trip to California and when I mentioned to him that I would love to visit Nancy’s store, he said we could return home via a more northerly route. I was ecstatic!
Anyway, while I was shopping, someone came up behind me and when I turned around, there she stood! I have to say, I was blown away! She was taller than I thought. At the time I was only 4’11. I have never met anyone nicer or more talented than she. I will never forget her coming out of her meeting just so I could meet her.
I had been a fan of hers for many years and that continues to this day!
Thank you, Nancy for being the woman you are.

Thank you Nancy for your videos on Utube ……they have taught me so much! I have several of your sewing books and they are a great help too. When I went to work many years ago my first thing I saved up for was a sewing machine. I didn’t have a car yet but my first desire was a sewing machine! My only training was a Home Ec. Class in high school. Through the years I learned so much from watching you on TV, on Utube and your books. I still love sewing so much that I am glued when I start and forget to eat or drink which isn’t good since I have low blood sugar. I so admire your dedication to helping so many such as myself to receive the joy of sewing and creating things. Your dedication has given so many direction in their lives. Right now I’m finishing up a baby quilt to give as a baby gift to a friend. I think something specifically made for them is much better than store bought. Thank you for all your years of help and inspiration! I would love to read your book!

I have always admired Nancy Zieman for her sewing knowledge and her courage to lead the way in teaching others. I am sure her book is quite interesting and will be an
excellent addition for my reading . My mother and grandmother both sewed beautifully. I am teaching my youngest granddaughter to carry on the tradition. At ten, she
has won two first place ribbons on her quilts, one was also best in show when she was seven years old.

Little Madison is our 6th grandchild (ages 16 to 10 days old) so a lot of our time is spent spoiling!! I grew up watching my mother sew and wearing the special dresses she made for me. When I married, one of my first splurges was an Emdeko sewing machine! Never heard of that brand before or since but it sewed like a charm for many years. Your book has been an inspiration to me. I have been a follower of yours for years but had no idea what you had been through to do what you do. The challenges you have faced would be enough to stop some people in their tracks but you have demonstrated that a strong faith does indeed keep us going when the going gets tough! Love your show and am a faithful customer of Nancy’s Notions! I keep your catalogs at my side and reach for them almost daily. Look forward to many more years of Sewing With Nancy and Nancy’s Notions.

Can’t wait to read your book, Nancy. I also grew up on a Wisconsin farm with 4-H playing a big role in my sewing history. My mom and I have watched your tv show since the beginning and we often call each other on Saturday mornings to discuss one of your sewing projects or guests. Keep on inspiring us sewists!

Nancy, I recently went to a new nail technician and after a while she mentioned her bells palsy. The first thought I had was to share with her your same issue and how you have succeeded in spite of it. Will have to share your book with her as soon as I can. Bless you for being such an inspiration.

I had been watching Sewing with Nancy on Saturday mornings before I ever had a machine. Out of the blue my dad bought me one. Once I had it I was confident that I could do some the projects she did because she broke them down into steps that made it easy to follow.

I just recently found your show. I began sewing quilts a year ago, and my desire to learn led me to search for television programs dedicated to sewing. I felt led to make what I call “prayer quilts” for people who were struggling with an issue in their lives. One of the first quilts I made was for a couple trying to adopt a baby in China. I am currently in the midst of making even more for a local pregnancy care center. The quilts are simple and definitely not perfect. Watching your show has been very beneficial. Now, hearing your story, I am even more inspired. Thank you for sharing your something so personal.

Sewing with Nancy was one of the bright spots in my week for years; I was a young bride whose husband was in the Navy and would go away for 14 weeks at a time. I was lonely, but Saturday mornings would find me watching my friend Nancy showing me how to sew things I never dreamed I’d be able to make. My kids used to play “Sewing with Nancy” and made all kinds of outfits for their dolls and teddy bears. You are more of an inspiration than you’ll ever know, Nancy. Thank you so much.

Unlike most of you I have only recently ‘found’ Nancy and I am amazed. What a courageous woman. I, also, have a bilateral facial paralysis so have more than a passing understanding of what you face on a daily basis. And like Nancy, know that if someone judges me by my face, I don’t care to have them in my space. luckily there are only a very few of these people in life. I must admit that unless looking in a mirror or being asked to smile, I do not even think of it. kudos to you nancy for making such a wonderful success of your life. And THANK YOU for your wonderful program. I will now be going through the archives to catch up.

I’m very new to sewing and quilting, I only picked it up a little over two years ago at the age of 25 and have been hooked ever since. But one of the first names I came across when looking into this new and great hobby was yours, and I recognized the source of that unique smile immediately as my father-in-law has also had an attack of Bell’s Palsy and my husband and I are also great wrestling fans and have followed commentator Jim Ross’ history with Bell’s as well. It definitely sounds as though you have an amazing story to tell, and I would love to read it in its entirety 🙂

I have been a fan of Nancy since 1985, when I first heard about her. That year I went to a seminar weekend of hers in Beaver Dam. There were about 50 women there, and Nancy was amazed there were that many!

She has made it through the days of small beginnings, and handles it with much dignity and grace.

    Congratulations, Nancy!

Your sewing show is one of the first I remember watching when I was a teenager. I didn’t start sewing (other than the home economics pillow case, pillow and drawstring bag) until I was 30 and had a daughter to sew for! You’ve always been an inspiration. And I watch when the guys in the house will let me. 😉 I’d love to read your book. Thanks for the chance!

I too grew up participating in our local 4-H program. My mom was a leader, and we had sewing and cooking groups that met at my house after school. The girls would ride the bus home with me, and my teenage brother would take them all home after our lesson. They all had a crush on my cute brother! I retired from my day job a few years ago and now have the opportunity to work at what I love. I have a quilting business from a home studio and work in a quilt fabric store part-time. Thanks for your awesome inspiration to all of us who are obsessed with this wonderful craft.

I’ve watched Sewing with Nancy for over 20 years. I am guilty of searching online to determine whether Nancy had a stroke. But, it didn’t stop me from talking up the show with all my sewing and non-sewing friends. I found a copy of one of Nancy’s first books in a used bookstore. It finally shed some light on her health history. Thanks for being so generous with you time and expertise.

I started sewing sewing around age 10. I was a physics major in college and I finally got a sewing machine to take to school with me. Sewing kept me sane while getting that degree and then onto graduate school for my masters degree. I watched Sewing With Nancy while at home with my 3 young children and stayed home for those years. I learned how to sew in short time segments and still get things made. Children are now grown but I still sew. It has always been a comforting hobby for me. And I still enjoy Sewing With Nancy.

I just found out about your book from an E-mail from Jaybird Quilts, and am so happy to know that you have written your story and are sharing it with us. I have recently come to quilting after a long life of sewing other things, and don’t know what I would do without your books to guide me when I’m feeling a little bit lost. Thanks for being there for all of us for such a long time. (Is it okay to say that? 🙂 )

I have watched Sewing with Nancy on and off for years. I remember it when I began to sew, falling in love with fabrics, but I never did fall in love with garment sewing. The light bulb went on when Nancy began quilting for me. Thanks Nancy for being bold enough to appear on television when others in similar circumstances wouldn’t fathom the idea. You have taught millions that they are talented, not only with a machine and thread, but in business, in self promotion and most of all, with themselves. My hope is that you have many more years (or at least as many as you would like) with your show, your business and your fanbase!

Hello Nancy! I have been setting my alarm for ‘early day’ as we call it for some time now in order to watch your show on Saturdays. My 4 year old granddaughter usually opens one eye from time to time to see if she “likes” your projects… then wakes up if “yes”. I have especially enjoyed your ending segments of late as I would love to do something similar in my community (help women to sew/craft/make). However, I have a recent disability to finish working through first.
You are such an inspiration! Bless you.

I’ve always been inspired by Nancy and how she never let what others perceive as a handicap hold her back. She shows me all the time that the only person holding me back from, going for it, is myself. She inspires me to not look at what is an issue, but look at what and how I can still do things. She has helped me keep working at solutions to get around my issues to still work with what my body is able to do.

I grew up a few miles from Beaver Dam and I remember when you started your business. I remember at the time that many people didn’t think you would make it, because after all, there was a fabric store already in Beaver Dam. I remember receiving your single page leaflets and started ordering from the very beginning. When you started the store, I probably knew it as well as any of the ladies that worked there.

I now live about 60 miles away, but I stop in as often as I can when in the area, visiting my Mother. I will always be a “Nancy’s” customer and fan. I’m so happy that you built your dream into the success that it has become. Thanks for the chance to win your book. I’m excited that it is also in Kindle version, and I’m off to purchase it right now. But I will also be sure to buy a hard copy next time I’m at your store. Wishing you continued success.

When in 8th grade, a classmate came to school with the coolest dress (shift), I had ever seen. I asked her where she got it and she said her mother made it. I was blown away! I had her mother make me one. When I investigated the garment, I decided I could do this, too. We lived in rural Illinois, family of 11 and not having much other than each other, I taught myself to sew on my mother’s treadle machine. She would answer my questions, but not much else. In high school I had a semester of basic sewing in Home Ec class, but was able to tackle a lined jacket by then. I have basically sewn my clothing and home dec items all my 63 years, now. It was a grand day when I tuned to PBS and was introduced to you, Nancy. It was then that I learned the professionalism of sewing, which I do not feel we can ever know all. Thank you for all you teach young and old. May the art and craft of sewing and design continue on through mentors and scholars such as you. MJ

    February 14, 2014

2010 was a turning point year for me. Health and family concerns had me ‘close the sewing room door’. Last year, I was determined to refocus and ‘opened the door’. I also started investigating sewing websites via the internet and discovered Nancy Zieman. I haven’t been able to follow Nancy daily but have always been very blessed with her presentations.
Recently, JayBird Quilts sent a notice of the book giveaway. I am not writing with the hopes of ‘winning’ a copy of Seams Unlikely — I am commenting because I am truly interested in ‘your story’. I homeschooled three daughters so that God’s Word would be real to them and also because I knew each one was a unique gift from God … and just yesterday a young woman was talking about how she was considered “different” and although she survived school – it wasn’t easy. So, Nancy, from just reading this post and the previous comments which share such love for your life; well, I will probably be ordering a copy(s) of Seams Unlikely. I would like to share it with others and especially my daughters. I have taught them sewing basics and pray that they will eventually be able to afford better quality machines because they really do such a marvelous job when given the time. I encourage them when ever I can to not lose the skills as I now feel that after years of being away from the sewing room; I feel like I am starting over again. Thank you Nancy for your inspiration.

She’s an overcomer for sure. I would be absolutely thrilled to win a copy of her book…but if not I will definitely be buying a copy in the future. Nancy is such a beautiful lady and such an inspiration to us all. Blessings Nancy.

This news of an autobiography is heart-stoppingly good. You have been a hero of mine, as you began a business when women were just stepping out; kept sewing alive and new as others were dropping it; taught in such a dignified and confidence-creating manner. For some years I would often refer to “my three Nancys”: my older dear friend, a newer friend, and you. I hope you have enjoyed reading of what you have meant to so many!

Nancy, your love of sewing and willingness to share your expertise in the early years gave me the confidence to face every sewing challenge with ease. You inspired me to attempt more challenging projects. You provided access to the tools to make them which made them a
joy to complete. You are my personal sewing buddy through all your books….congratulations and many blessings on your book.

I’ll never forget the day I saw you at a sewing expo weekend in Pittsburgh. It was at least 20 years ago, and you were greeting everyone who stopped by your Nancy’s Notions exhibit. I went in to work that Monday and very excitedly told a co-worker who also sewed that I had seen Nancy Zieman!
Love your catalog – I’ve ordered too many knit fabrics! The quality is excellent.

I can’t wait to read this book! Nancy, you really have been an inspiration 🙂

I moved to the USA 5 years ago and didn’t know anyone. I watched your show on PBS on Saturday mornings and quickly got hooked (despite not having touched a sewing machine since high school). After watching your show for a couple of years I finally bit the bullet and bought a sewing machine, still tuning in every week. This past August I made my own wedding dress, probably one of the things I’m most proud of. I couldn’t have done that without you, Nancy!

    February 15, 2014

Nancy, I have watched you from the beginning as many others have. I, like you, have been sewn, beginning at my grandmother’s knee. She made her own patterns from newspaper. Then I learned from you, so many techniques for fine sewing. In the beginning I had small children, a small budget and so I made jeans and shirts for the boys as well as all my daughters wardrobe. Thanks to your instruction over the years, they wore clothes that you inspired, from knit baby gowns on! In recent years I have learned a lot about machine embroidery by watching your program. Now that I am retired I have more time to use all those wonderful tricks and tips that I have learned from you and your guests over the years. You are dear friend although we have never met. You have made a difference in the lives of so many! May God continue to bless you.

Excited to learn about your biography in time to be part of the book giveaway. I’m eager to read your story and see your pictorial history. LOL – tape spike marks explanation. More so, I’d be thrilled to share your book with my quilter friend across the street. When I moved to town a couple years ago, she encouraged me to complete my first quilt that was 80% complete/10 years in the making. Thereafter, to move beyond my habitual “planning” stage and on to “execution”. One quilt down…and more to come 🙂 I’m drowning in fabric…with very good intentions! But I’ve got time to read and share your book. Thanks for all the knowledge you have shared over the years; your explanations add great clarity to the task at hand.

I’ve grown up with Sewing with Nancy and ordering those hard-to-find supplies from Nancy’s Notions. She inspires you in the craft world and in everyday life when you see not only her sewing genius but in what she’s overcome. I even find her show helps to relax me after a long day at work (as a patternmaker!) – watching Sewing with Nancy is like curling up with a good book.

Wow! I am so excited to read this book. I particularly like the part in this blog post where you say “we ALL face challenges” (emphasis mine). A lot of people look like they have perfectly normal lives, but are struggling inside. Whether that is financially, emotionally, physically or however, it is all the more reason to be kind and respect one another and not to judge. Thank you for writing this book Nancy! I hope I win a copy!

Nancy, you are an inspiration, not only for your quilting knowledge, but your life as we know it. Thank you for writing a book that tells it as it is, life doesn’t always give you perfection but you can take what you are given and make it work, way beyond the lemons and lemonade cliché.
I’ve watched your show, been to your shop in Wisconsin and own some of your patterns and tools.

This is super neat. I was just on my free Kindle on my computer to see if your book is there yet. It is, but still too much for my pocket, since I just bought a whole bunch of fabric from you. So I’m putting in my bid and crossing my fingers (makes it hard to quilt that way) and hoping for the best. Either way, love watching you on PBS each week.

Dear Nancy, As a teenager, I had acne. It got worse as I got older even though people kept telling me, “You’ll outgrow it.” I never did. I had adult acne all my life. I am now almost 68. I still break out.

As a teen, I was told of one guy’s comment about me: “Nancy looks good from a distance, but when you get up close, forget it.” That one hurt and never left me. I also had chipped teeth. My home life gave me feelings of inferiority too. My self-worth was pretty low and stayed that way underneath all my life.

When I read about your “challenges,” my heart went out to you because like you said you “could not hide.” Everyone sees our faces.

When I first watched your show many years ago, I didn’t realize there was an issue, and later was encouraged to see that you did not let it bother you that–or so I thought. Hearing your story how you had low self-esteem made me cry. I knew exactly what you felt.

I’ve always thought you were pretty, and you still are. Now that I see the photos of you when you were little, how cute you were! Later as a teen, you looked normal and better than many of us.

You have blessed us with sharing all your sewing knowledge and skills and now your story. It’s so worth telling. We are privileged to learn it and know what you have gone through. Thank you so much.

What I like best about you is your heart for others–especially kids. Thank you, Nancy, for caring so much about others and those that are truly less fortunate and need encouragement and someone to care about them. God bless you.

My Mom watched your shows all the time so I was automatically exposed to sewing, quilting, and different creative skills. Mom now has Alzheimers’ and is not able to sew; however, I continue to create thanks to everything that my Mom taught me. I have been given the treasures of my mother’s sewing machine and all of her notions (there must be a million of them) and there are glimpses of Nancy Notions everywhere. I have enjoyed watching “Sewing with Nancy” for many years. I used to sit and watch it while nursing my daughter (she is 22 now and getting married this week on Feb. 20) I still watch it today, and if I miss the show on TV, then I try to watch it online as soon as it is available. “Sewing with Nancy” and also the website has provided me with entertainment, not to mention how much I have learned about various aspects of sewing. It made learning fun. I would love to get this book.

I would be honored to win a copy of your book. I had a bout with Bell’s Palsy after the birth of my first daughter, over 30 years ago. It eventually went away. I recently had some strange feelings on the left side of my face and like my previous experience, the doctors hadn’t a clue. I learned to sew through Girls Scouts, being a city girl, there was no 4H, but it did lead me to take Home Economics Classes in high school and major in it in college. In 1970 I started teaching and although Home Economics was my first love, due to budget cuts, I also taught 4 & 6th grade, & boy’s PE. I retired in 2005 and have returned to my first love, sewing and have taken up quilting, although I did do some sewing/quilting projects from time to time with my students. I recall watching some of your first shows on Wisconsin Public Broadcasting that was aired on KQED here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Thanks for all your inspiration, both in character and the techniques in sewing.

Nancy, I have admired you for many years and honestly can’t remember not watching your show. I learned to sew back in the day when lessons were taught at Singer stores — you could buy everything you needed in the store — using my mother’s old avocado green Kenmore machine. I have watched Sewing With Nancy since way back in the 80s. It used to come on while I was at work, so I recorded it and would watch it late at night when the kids were asleep. I loved the organized method of getting things done! 10-20-30 minutes to sew sure did help when I was a full time mom, wife, classroom teacher and grad student!
Thank you for all your ideas, and for sharing your story with us!

Nancy, I heard you on the Larry Meillor show last week and it was wonderful to hear the discussion. As a recent retiree, I have come back to sewing and quilting after a hiatus of 27 years, and so much has changed! Your show is getting me caught up to the times! I now also have time to go through all those old files, and guess what I found…an old Nancy’s Notions catalogue, 4 or 6 pages and mimeographed! Thank goodness for being able to order on-line nowadays! And thanks for the book…it took me a lot longer than it did you to understand that our challenges needn’t define us. That’s an important message. I hope to meet you someday, perhaps at Quilt Expo next year. Thank you!

I’m so excited! I just checked and your 30th Anniversary Show is on today at 1:00 pm. I am recording it for inspiration. Back in 1971, my boss Rol Jeske was a founding member of the local McHenry County IL chapter of the Open Door Society and he had, I seem to recall, five adopted interracial children. He worked tirelessly to give his children a wonderful life and promote adoptions. God rest his soul as he left us in 2011. So I know how big your heart must be and what a generous spirit you are. Nancy, enjoy this wonderful day that the Good Lord has given us to be creative. Blessings, Sue

I was clearing out an old box of bits and pieces and fabric scraps a few weeks ago and came across an old Nancy’s Notions catalog. My daughter saw it in the “Toss” pile, picked it up and started to browse. She had two comments – “Ma this is older than me!” and “Where’s the web site? You mean you had to fill out this order form?” I can’t wait to read this book.
