If your thoughts are turning to sewing something light or airy to ward off the winter blues, a new Sewing With Nancy series, may be just the inspiration. Amy Barickman and I collaborated on the TV series, Hankie Style, featuring vintage hankies repurposed in accessories, tops, handbags, etc. When preparing for the TV series, my staff member, Lois, made a quick shopping trip to a local resale shop and purchased about 20 vintage hankies for $30. We also used Moda's Hankie Reproductions for the samples. Amy, of course, came with her suitcase filled to the brim with hankies and hankie projects. In the photo, you can see how we prepare for the TV show, samples abound! (Amy is featured with my co-worker, Donna Fenske.) I doubt that my grandmother would have thought of sewing with hankies, yet that’s exactly what this series is all about. Amy’s hankie projects are delightful. One of my favorite projects is the hankies brooch (I’m wearing it in the photo.) The feminine accessory is created from two coordinating hankies in about an hour of time. You’ll find the book/DVD and reproduction hankies at the links below.
